  1. I coudn't find any... and hence, my impression was that GRE doesn't have an overall percentile.
  2. Hey gc98835, how to find the overall percentile in GRE scores anyway?
  3. Oh.. Didn't realize this would be below the cut-off levels. The published table by ETS stated 164 in quant here is equiv of 790 on the earlier format. Sure, time to go back to the drawing board again :( . Just a thought though..... Would it be easier to crack a higher percentile in the GMAT quant by any chance. I don't really have any idea about the GMAT. Hence, the question. TIA
  4. Hi, I'm planning to apply for a PhD in Finance. I'm from India having a degree in Mech Engg. followed by a PGDM. I had earlier posted my profile on this forum once. I took my GRE exams a few months back and got the following scores - Quant - 164 (90th percentile) Verbal - 163 (91st percentile) Total - 327/340 AWA - 4.0 I was wondering if these scores are too low, and should I re-take the GRE once again and try to improve the scores. Also wondering that if I do take another test, should I take the GMAT? Although most universities state that both GRE and GMAT are acceptable, is there a preference for GMAT scores?
  5. I too doubt that either 1 or 2 would help, since if you take IIT+IIM, you would have mostly covered multivariate calculus, analysis, linear algebra, ODE, PDEs, Prob Stats, ........ You should definitely build your contacts so as to get great LORs.
  6. I received this mail from there grad school on making an enquiry - .......at this time we provide $20,000 yearly and $5000 during the summer months in stipend benefits.
  7. Bitan, You could try one of the M Res courses at Europe, which are great feeder schools to top US B-Schools. Also you could try the ISB CAF. What I have deduced from most discussions here is that LOR from strong referees help you a lot and say typical profs at normal colleges or IIMs might not fall in that category (mostly because they don't publish in the top journals that much as you rightly pointed out). Going through a masters or say, ISB CAF might entail an additional year of preparation, but overall a great strategy if you are convinced you want to to research at a good B school.
  8. You could try this... GPA Calculator
  9. Thanks, Will check Missouri, Drexel, Tulane. Gatech deadline over actually for this year. Would obviously love to have a T50 univ as a safety bet but since that's not really a possibility, hence the curiosity on outside T50.
  10. @ qwang - Thanks for taking the time out to reply in such detail. My application list is not skewed towards the top anymore. As for the publications, they are in microfluidics journal with a 3.5 impact factor. Now, coming to the MBA GPA - I focused more on preparation for placements and networking, engaging in organizational activities a lot (since my resume lacked any such thing prior to IIM and I was keen on getting into i banking/consulting). I managed to screw my grades because of these. But I understand that a lot of ppl would have stellar GPAs even with these extra-currics. So, I am not sure if I should try to mention or explain this in the optional essay at all. It was specially the non-quant courses where I did get whacked in the GPAs. Any thoughts on these? Also, could someone please suggest a couple of safety schools please? I am really confused between different schools in the T50-80 range. TIA
  11. Couple of places I mailed suggested not to worry about the financial certification at the application stage. Also, checked with a couple of friends already there... they had to send it after receiving the I-20 from the school they went to.
  12. @qwang. Thanks for the inputs. As for the journal papers, they were in fluid mech. and in a journal with an impact factor 3.5. I was the first author in one, the other being my guide. One paper was entirely my work; the second paper though was in revision when I graduated out of undergrad. Subsequently my guide completed the work and made me the 2nd author. Yes, I kept ill a lot (didn't really get suited to the weather there) and I also concentrated on networking a lot more, but I don't think that either of the above are compelling reasons to explain the GPA. Yes, I was basing the application list entirely on UTD rankings and it would have been a terrible idea. Thanks to some friends I made here, the list is not skewed anymore. :) I am mostly avoiding Top 10s. @ All : I find the UTD rankings pretty confusing. Depending on how many years you select, there is a high variability in the rankings. If you check INSEAD with only 2011 and 2012 as the control years, it ranks a 78!!!:confused::confused::confused: Since, when I was in MBA, I didn't really delve deep into research. My knowledge as to which profs are great, which programs are great is to an extent based on the rankings and the reviews in the forum. Would be great if anyone could guide me a bit about schools - mid - rankings but with decent strength in areas of say game theory in finance, industrial organization, product market interactions with corp fin. Also, although I know it is really difficult to give a suggestion, but still could you give some ideas on safety schools.
