  1. Thanks so much Indus. My undergraduate university does not mention GPA/CGPA/Ranking on the transcript. In fact my transcript mentions that the University does not have such evaluation. All they declare is a grade (I have attained the highest of the 4 grades achievable). Is there some way to counter that ? Perhaps a supporting letter from my undergraduate professor ? Also, to how many schools should I be applying ? I have seen a lot of candidates applying to 15-20 programs. Will I need to apply to that many schools ? Could you recommend a breakup amongst the top 50 ? P.S : It is really good to hear that my profile would be competitive along with a good GRE score and a well written application. Thanks sb29. I have based my preferences primarily with UTD PhD rankings supplemented by the overall ranking of the b-school. I will try to get all the three recos from my professors at Manchester. Infact, I got to know about the policy when I asked one of my professors. The professors I spoke to was a little bit concerned that she had only taught one course unit and that it may not be sufficient for her to judge. Have you too faced any such responses ? She is one of the professors who knows me better than others who taught me (except from my thesis supervisor, ofcourse). How could I convince her to recommend me ? Also, if I am applying to about 10-15 universities and if they all expect the professors to give recommendation in a University specific format; will the professors have the time and patience to fill out the forms ? I am concerned that the professors may be annoyed after 5-6 universities and may not be much forthcoming to recommend anyone (let alone me).
  2. Indus, My university does not provide CGPA/GPA scores. Nor does it publish student rankings on the transcripts. All it does is declare a grade on the transcript (my grade is the highest one can achieve of the 4 awarded grades). Is there a way to circumvent that ?
  3. Thanks Indus. Its really good to hear that my profile, when coupled with a good GRE score, a well written SOP and a focused research interests, is competitive a the T50 schools. I will try to get all the three LOR's from Manchester University. I only hope that the professor can take out the time to recommend. Many applicants seem to apply to about 10-15 schools. Is that the right way to go ?? Also generally will the Professors have the patience to respond to recommendation requests from all 15 universities ?? Thanks Sb29. I have indeed based my preferences on the UTDallas rankings coupled with the school's overall rankings. I will try to get all of my recos from Manchester University.
  4. Thanks sb29. I have closed the other thread (I had created the other thread but it took ages to reflect the correct preference, the mod approvals etc..) My main interest is in technology entrepreneurship and the decision making process that would affect the strategy. That is why I was looking into Strategy & Entrepreneurship. I feel that they are very closely linked to each other. 1) My selection of universities was primarily based upon their rankings. What would you feel will improve my chances of getting into these top 20 ones ? 2) You are absolutely right. My undergrad professors do not have Ph.Ds and have not published much. But my masters university (Manchester) has a policy that only the student's personal tutors and the thesis supervisors can recommend. I will need atleast 3 recos at the above stated Universities. How could I circumvent that ?
  5. Mods. Please delete this thread. I have created a new one with the correct details and am awaiting its approval.
  6. Hi , For a long time I have been roaming these halls of wisdom at Urch and I am super excited to be posting for the first time. I would greatly appreciate if I could get your inputs and reviews on my profile. My main concern is about how high and wide I should be applying ? Education : Bachelors in Civil Engineering - 74 % (Top 5% in my class ) - 2nd tier Indian University Masters in Project Management - Passed with Merit (69.4% very close to a distinction) - from University of Manchester (U.K) Research experience : a) Authored a technical paper during Civil Engineering and presented at 2 National level conferences (where I was awarded best paper presented in my category) b) Research conducted during masters on Project Management in Joint Venture Environments (was graded with a distinction for the same). Work Experience a) 1 year in a Big 4 Firm as a consultant : Reviewing Project Management practices for top firms across Manufaturing, Pharma and Power generation industries b) 2 years in an iOS (iPhone/iPad) Application Development studio as the Head of Operations : I am a one of the partners at the firm and have worked on everything including Programming, operations, business development, client relations and recruitment. c) Volunteered for 3 months in the UK, where I managed a project to train the unemployed to get jobs by gaining skills such as IT and cooking. Recommendations : One from my thesis adviser at the University of Manchester, UK One from my thesis adviser at my Undergraduate College . One from my professor at undergraduate college under whom I took various courses. Test Scores : I am studying for the GRE which is scheduled for mid November. During mock tests, I am averaging a 322; 164 Q and 158 V. But I am confident of getting to at least 168 (790) Q 162 V and 5.5 A. Target is 330 and 5.5 A. Research interests: I am pretty string at computer programming and project management methodologies. Also I do have a broad but informal experience in operations management. I am looking to pursue Ph.D in General management / Strategy / Entrepreneurship. I have always wanted to end up as an academic. My breadth of experience varies from startups to some of the biggest firms in India. P.S: Although I am very highly interested in research, my passion is for teaching. I have always enjoyed and loved to teaching / help my peers during my studies. Target Schools : CMU Tepper, Kellogs, Cornell, U Mich Ross , PSU-Smeal, UT McCombs, UT Dallas, UChicago-Booth, Fuqua , UToronto-Rotman , UYork-Schulich Age : 25 - I feel its the perfect time I would like your feedback on : - Do I really stand a chance at these schools? If not , which others should I realistically target? - Is my plan to get two recos from my undergraduate college professors OK? - Since my study and research experience are not entirely related to my Ph.D interest, will my work experience be sufficient to balance the deficit? Thanks
