  1. Institution: UBC Program: Economics PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: 33k first year, Notification date: March 12 Notified through: email Posted on GC (thegradcafe.com): Comments: cool.
  2. I am Canadian. I am not sure if they do it for all prospective admits, but they probably do. I think they do it partially instead of a SOP.
  3. It is too late... but thanks for the reply. I did what you said and I guess it went well because I got an offer from them.
  4. Institution: U of T Program: PhD Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: 32k Notification Date: 03/01/14 Notified through: Email Posted on GC: Yes Comments:Feeling Alright.
  5. Just got asked to do a telephone interview with U of T. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect in this interview? thanks.
  6. That's me... I took the abstract version of my University's Linear Algebra class. It focused on proofs. My intent over the summer is not to become well versed in analysis, but to get a base in analysis so I am not too far behind in the 1st semester math class which is all analysis. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will definitely look into them.
  7. Hey everyone, I'll be starting my graduate studies in September and I have not taken any real analysis courses yet. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good book to teach it to myself with. I want to get as far as I can this summer. thanks.
  8. I honestly don't know that much about Queen's or UWO. I am from BC. But I am pretty sure that if you want to work outside of Academia all the Canadian Universities can help facilitate that. My feeling is Queen's might be better for that than Western. I base that solely on the fact that with Western you are fundamentally accepted into their PhD program if you get into the MA program. I hear good things about the atmosphere and program at both of the schools, Western is definitely a strong Macro school . But, really, I think if you are looking for an industry job all the top 4 (5 if you include SFU) are helpful. I am pretty sure some SFU MA students have gotten junior positions, or were taken on as interns during their program, at the Bank of Canada in the last couple years (obviously great experience).
  9. So background. I'm a Canadian graduating from a top 5 canadian undergrad program this year. I have been accepted into UBC, U of T, Queen's, Western, SFU, UCL, BGSE. I am pretty excited about the idea of BGSE. It has a great reputation, I like the look of the program and, it is in Barcelona of course. The Barcelona thing is what is really selling me on it right now, I have always wanted an excuse to live somewhere in Europe for a stretch, so this is just the excuse that I need. Ultimately, I would like to do a PhD focused on micro theory/game theory/behavioural. Getting placed into the states would be cool, but also getting place back in Canada would be great as well. So BGSE is highly touted for its Macro faculty who can give you a great reference, but how is it for Micro? How strong are references from the Micro faculty? From the structure of the program, given that the first semester contains a very intensive Micro theory course (along with math and metrics), and in the second and third you can choose your field courses as to focus very specifically on Micro topics, it seems like a great place to get a rigorous micro training. A few questions I have is specifically from those who might have completed the MSc in Economics at BGSE: -How big are the core classes in the first semester? How intense was the competition? How much of a jump from your undergrad studies was the curriculum? Were the expectations from class reasonable? (reasonable can still mean challenging) Was it hard to get to know the profs, were they approachable/helpful? -How about the size of the elective classes? Lastly. Opinions: is it crazy for me to leave Canada, where I have good funding offers from the top 5 schools here to go to BGSE and covering a good amount of the costs from my own pocket? Thanks in advance everyone.
  10. Thanks for all the replies. I received word from the last school I applied to today, 7 schools and 7 acceptances, so obviously I am pretty grateful for the reference letters my refs submitted. I sent them all a little thank you note today over email, but I am wondering if I should do more. It's good to hear what others did, so thanks everyone.
  11. Hello Urch, Everyone of my applications was successful this year and I know a huge part of that is due to my reference letters. Here is my questions, is there a certain way to thank your references? is expected to thank them? What would you guys do?

  13. The first wave of acceptances were sent out last week. The deadline given for response was March 17th for the one I received. I would suggest that it is not certain those who have not be notified are rejected. They will probably send out another wave of admission offers after they receive some rejections from their first wave.
