  1. If you want to teach in India, you dont need a Phd from US (unless you want to teach at ISB, for IIMs and other Indian B schools you can do a Phd from an IIM). If you want to teach in the US, apply for low ranked accredited universities in the US, they would be more willing to accept you since you can teach right away after joining the program because of your experience. If you want to end up at research intensive institutions, then develop your research profile before applying for ranked Phds, I would suggest an RAship at ISB as one way of doing this, otherwise a research masters in a relevant field.
  2. Before joining a masters program, I think you need to decide your area. Because which Masters program best suits you depends on whether your area is Finance or OB etc. If you are really unsure of your area, I think an MBA from a top school is also a decent option if you focus on doing RAships and attending Phd seminars during your MBA. WIth your profile you can get into a top 10 MBA in my opinion which gives you access to Profs. from a T10 school, for doing research with them and obtaining letters. The advantage of MBA would be that you can choose to postpone deciding your area for now. However cost is a downside. Also I am not sure if the MBA Adcoms at top schools will admit you if you are honest about your intention of using an MBA as a stepping stone for a Phd since your profile will affect their statistics (like average salary after graduation etc.)
  3. Try to be free from the beginning of August.
  4. I completely agree with this, i strongly believe that a philosophy of science course should be compulsory in all Phd programs (after all a Phd is a doctor of philosophy), unfortunately that is not the case in many schools.
  5. Actually we got moderators only recently, before that this forum still wasn't polluted for years without ANY moderation (luckily we didn't get many spambots), mainly because of low BS tolerance as you said.
  6. We only have the econ math camp and it starts on august 11 (completely optional but i am going to attend it). Regular classes start on september 3.
  7. If anyone is interested in knowing the actual figures earned by faculty, a good source is to check out salaries of Profs. from universities in Texas (and use it as a proxy for other locations, maybe adjust a bit for cost of living). All of the salaries from public universities in Texas are public records (just google some prof. name and salary and you will get it), so you can compare salaries at top univs (say UT Austin) and low ranked univs, and also for Assistant, Associate and Full profs. From an initial analysis, full profs who are research active earn a lot (sometimes earning almost 300k or more, seen a few more than 400k too), and full profs who are not research active sometimes earn less than Assistant profs who are publishing well (some star assistant profs. earn more than 200k). At low ranked teaching oriented univs, tenured faculty seem to earn around 100k (exception being department heads who earn around 200k).This would be the absolute minimum i think, and even this is comfortable enough to me :eager:
  8. If you have research fit with this school, I would say take it. If its indeed T15, then if you do well in the program you will get placed well.
  9. Yes lets try to stay moderately active here :) and lets fix a date in 5 years or so when we will have a reunion where we all log in on the same day and exchange hopefully happy stories :drunk:
  10. I was under the impression that you somehow get funding one way or the other, through TAing or even teaching beyond 5th year?
  11. There are a few research oriented business masters programs (not MBA) in Europe, and I have seen a few in North America, for e.g. at UBC.
  12. I don't think the learning curve is that steep, if you want to learn it start writing your next term papers etc. in Latex and you will quickly pick up everything along the way whenever you need something.
  13. I was told exactly the same thing by my Profs regarding choosing top schools for those aiming to get placed in a particular country, and I factored this point while making my decision. The competition for positions in top schools in some particular countries (I am not considering average schools since most of them do not produce good research) is extremely tough since every year there are a few candidates from top schools in the US wanting to go back to their country, for example HKUST in Hong Kong, NUS in Singapore, SNU in Korea and even ISB in India. If you look at their recent hires, most if not all of them are from prestigious schools.
  14. For my program it says that you need to be on campus to receive the stipend. If you are fine with not receiving your stipend, working from home might be possible but it is still unlikely i think, and in any case you will not know about this possibility until you join a program, spend 2 years and get an advisor (who has to agree to such an arrangement).
