  1. Hello, I am in Europe in a bachelor in accounting and finance.Hopefully soon i am getting my degree and i am exploring my master degree options. Since i had a heavy set of accounting courses (cost accounting, auditing, financial analysis, financial accounting and so on) i wanna shoot for something with only a couple of accounting courses and rest in general financial management/economics subject. Practically to become a business executive, up to CFO, maybe even CEO (no i dont want mba, i want to learn technical skills in understanding the enviroment and analyse risks and dangers in a cost-benefit model. Not take "leadership" courses) Since i can see from many ads that a master as a typical requirement is a must. I can go economics or finance Finance was my "second" focus in my degree, so i am familiar with a couple of things therefore i can evaluate how a masters degree in finance would fit in my purposes. What i am not familiar is a master in econ What classes usually does a good master in econ degree offer? The one i am considering has financial math macro micro econometrics corporate finance IFRS Auditing + Thesis What do you guys say? About placements program is very good in regional markets, which for now is what i care. What are the cost-benefits of a ma in econ, against a msfinance? The finance has the classical courses (econometrics, portfolio management, derivatives...) The main problem is i have already taken half of those in undergrad Both programs place kind of good, so its more like the content and the quality of each, what i evaluate.

  3. Hello, i am a finance major. soon finishing my degree and i am searching for options to get my master in part time. I want to earn a master because i am interested in topic and also because i want more solid credentials on my job( have greater chances either at finance division of a company, or work at a bank) I have decided mba is not for me (at least not in the next 10 years) as i want a combination, of a degree applicable at most jobs and yet being technical to a point , focused in hard skills I have 2 options 1 accounting and finance 2 applied economics and finance Both will give me the credibility in finance but 2 is more likely to teach me more stuff since 1 is like my undergrad. Now the real question Is the combination of finance and applied economics (among others it has 2 classes in strategy and game theory, macroeconomics, business strategy and so on) good substitute for for managerial/strategic roles? As i said i dont see MBA in the near future, and i want to know if applied economics is a good way to study strategic decisions and become a good manager Thanks in advance
  4. Hello I am a finance major in europe. I am propably finishing next yeat. What is a good preparation for business executive position and some potential phd in business (with focus in strategy) I am more inclined towards MBA at my school. Other choices are master in finance or master in applied econ.
  5. Hello A simple question, i am finance and acc major, and there is a program in my school, MSF with a strong quant focus can this mean i can apply for both type of jobs? asset management/corporate finance and quant roles?
  6. hello i check 2 route of the same master in statistics (though you have to state which you go in start) interests= quantitative analyst in a bank in core it has many classes like propabilities, stat inference, non parametrical analysis, simulation, time series and so on the main differences are route 1 bayesian statistics GLM route 2 linear programming + non linear risk management what you say? can i go one and self study the other? if yes which?
  7. ok more imput i can study part time master before go in phd (for personal reasons) my university offers 3 masters relative to what i want econ department offers those 2 applied econ and finance it has applied micro, econometrics I, game theory, applied micro II, corp finance, portfolio management, banking and capital markets, risk management and financial derivatives, financial accounting and analysis, econometrics in markets and (macro or game theory) banking and finance math, econometrics , macro in capital markets, portfolio, banking/financial accounting, econometrics, corp finance, derivatives, banking and risk, credit products, game theory finance department (the one i am in) corp fin, financial acc, financial analysis, derivatives, portfolio, capital markets, econometrics, behav finance, macrofinance, math so essensially i will have the opportunity to ask for LORs in both scenarios if i go the first one i will have exposure to econ profs from the master and finance from the undergrad from second i will have both (cause some classes are done by my program) from third i will be only on my profs so propably i will only get lors from fin profs
  8. hi my question is, can you overlap one field with the other? i am referring to econometrics and capital markets research i dont ask about funding, placements or whatever but knowledge-wise
  9. I wanted to ask are the finance topics equally "respected" in academic community? example corp finance vs risk management vs asset pricing and so on or some tend to be better than the other ( i am not asking WHICH, but if that happens)
  10. i am going 3rd year in accounting and finance in europe bachelor i check the classes, i wanna ask, do somehow finance classes are in general ranked? i mean i have a "sense" based on things i read or i heard from professors that its somehow trading derivatives-classes> risk managment, portfolio managment> corporate finance or something is it true or just my idea?
  11. I know the title is kinda messed up, i am sorry for that, i will try to explain my best. I am speaking for both, master and phd level if the deparment awarding the degree changes the concept. Example, in my school we can an econ, a finance deparment and a statistics and you can study econometrics (in all of them) financial economics (fin+ econ) banking (fin + econ) quantitative finance (fin + stats) My question is, does that influence the subject? I mean, does it matter from which deparment you study econometrics, or quantitative methods? Is the posible differense significant enough even when all the deparments are in the save university? Will it matter in both academia and industry?
  12. Hello i have a question, do those 2 have any differense?
  13. Before i go phd, i will already have my auditor license and ACCA, (work 2-3 years) (preferably big4) if i opt to go phd, i will do it, in order to go academia, but my point is, to have options between "got my phd" and "got my lecturer job", in my faculty, sometimes, it takes 1 year, sometimes it takes 5, its rather large ammount of time, to just wait And to speak truth, in my area, there isnt many high level accounting deparments, in fact, 1 bachelor, 2 masters and 1 lesser quality bachelor, while in economics there are 4-5 bachelors, double that, masters, same for finance. So its not like many positions will be open, unless i decide to travel. Therefore i will want a plan B The positions i think about are in audit and management accounting (designing cost-estimating systems, asset allocation consulting and so on) Put it simple I already plan on getting a 2-3 years experience with phd, i will spend 3 (at least years) in accounting research Will i be in general, marketable for jobs requiring 5-6 years experience? (2-3 +3) But yes, as you said i wanna end up in university, the "private sector" is just temporary
  14. Hello, long story short my school has a DBA and phd in accounting (they are hosted by different department but pretty much, both constribute in each other) i like the research idea, but i also like the earn a living idea will a doctorate in accounting, get you any consulting or senior auditing/accounting jobs?
  15. bsc accounting MSc statistics can you go phd in economics after that?
  16. From your answer i must say i understand its not good not bad. So i will enter some more info I wanna stick to accounting, but have a big variety of tools. Even with the master of finance i would still stay in auditing (internal or external) to become a controller, or i would use it, for phd in accounting. I dont wanna do a master to change, my focus, but to increased the one i already have. Maybe i should do the other route (in accounting, and as electives pick Modern Types of Financing that was the general M&A, forfaiting, leasing etc, +Equity Portfolio Management + International Capital Taxation and Investment Decisions)???? Also in my reach and available there is this master in statistics buts its not ranked at all, nor have a guide in english (while the previous master in europe, is at 35 accounting and 90 in global ladder, at financial markets) and i also think it might be little overkill to go have a master in stats, while just wanting to audit->control -> cfo OR phd in accounting I think i confused the topic instead of making it easier :) well, you know thanks for reading
  17. The title is rather strange, i will explain Hello there, After 1 year of constant searching and changing opinions i finally decided i do accounting and finance in greece (focus in accounting) i wanna do acca to get licensed and worked for some years in big 4 audit then i would like to further study 2 routes i see 1 stay in auditing, 2 get phd in accounting and go academia now with that i wanna do a master in finance, and there is a thing the reason i wanna do it, is more intellectual than "job prospects" does that make me "less decisive" or something? i wanna master in finance cause mainly i am interested in the study itself so, will a finance master be helpful in the 2 scenarios i mentioned? (its classes are here http://www.postgraduate-accfin.aueb.gr/Files/Curriculum.pdf and the descriptions here http://www.postgraduate-accfin.aueb.gr/Files/MSc_courses%20description_eng.pdf ) I mainly wanna do it, cause of my interest, but it wouldnt hurt helping with my goals aswell
  18. what about the stipends? any link where i can see detailed technical info? I didnt mention earlier, i am in low budget, and i can only do so with R or T assistanship (=stipent/paid fees) Also i heard financial accounting research is similar to microeconomics, is this true? (i have read journals, others are very similar to micro, others to corporate finance, so i cant conclude anything)
  19. would a master in economics or master in economics and finance help?
  20. i have heard that its hard to get card for america, and the funding for overseas students is very limited, so that choice is not in my reach thanks for the answer, though the question is more like what to do master than where to do it
  21. Hello i am moving to last year of a Bsc accounting and finance, in greece i am planning to work here, or maybe move around to europe. i am interested in auditing and banking, and i was thinking to pursuit a phd in accounting what i am interested is auditing, capital markets, financial and managerial accounting (i am not rushed to pick here, since i am still undergrad) what master would suit me more? choices are applied economics and finance banking and finance accounting and finance
  22. what is the best route for quant positions? phd in econ? finance? statistics? or just an mba in finance
  23. hello i would like opinions i have read that mba is better for finance jobs, what about government consulting? Can you do it with mba? Or the mpa is a must? Other words is mba a paspartou? Also, i have read that mpa is a poor man's mba, having that said, would you prefer a top mpa or a mid mba?
  24. hi 2 short questions 1- i read in forums some people, saying, its better to take a quant master if you wanna pursui phd in econ, or business, or similar, so lets say, someone wants to go phd in economics, is it better to do a master in statistics, financial engineering ..., or the Master in econ, will teach him, the applied quant methods he will need? 2- if i manage to survive a master in econ, will i have every knowledge to proceed in phd, regardless of the previous background (put it simple, i am accounting/finance, if i manage to finish the master, will it matter that i wasnt econ first place? or i will have all the knowledge) thanks
  25. since we talk about it is there an essensial differense between dba in econ and phd in econ?
