  1. I do have a basic concept of accounting research... positive vs. normative... Analytical vs. Archival vs. Experimental methodolgies I have read the Ball and Brown study and am understand efficient market hypothesis...all this being covered in both undergraduate and graduate school. I tend to gravitate towards behavioral research. That is what interests me. So let's say I take a Calculus II and III course in the next two years along with linear algebra, and improve my GMAT to a 700...what schools are within my reach? By then I should have my CPA and close to 3 years work experience. This is a process...and I need to start planning and preparing myself now.
  2. I have heard it all about SMU haha. Still a quality school though. My sister actually went to Rice for undergraduate. Texas schools are awesome!
  3. Also, research interests are: Earnings Management, Conceptual Framework, and Capitalist vs. Marxist economy/accounting I did a research paper in graduate school on accrual based earnings management versus real activities manipulation. The paper examined the impact of increased regulation and improved audit quality on accrual based earnings management, specifically focusing on the tradeoff between accrual based earnings management and real activities manipulation. I DO LOVE RESEARCH!!! Accounting can be, and should be fun :)
  4. Are online courses ok? I work heavy hours...it is public accounting after all. Also, does the quality of my undergraduate university help my position with my low GPA? SMU has a solid reputation.
  5. I have taken Intermediate Accounting I, Intermediate Accounting II, Advanced Accounting, Financial Statement Analysis, Calculus, Statistics, Intro Microeconomics, and Intermediate Microeconomics. The only course I need to take is linear algebra. While I am interested in teaching...I do love research! I will remember that when contacting/speaking to schools. I recently graduated this past May from my graduate program.
  6. I have decided that I want to pursue a career in teaching/researching accounting. I am considering several schools at the moment: Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, U. of South Carolina (USC), Ole Miss, Rice, and U. of Houston. Here is my background: Undergrad: SMU - BBA Accounting GPA: 3.20 Graduate: College of Charleston - MSA GPA: 3.60 GMAT: 650 I currently have 1 year public accounting experience and am close to passing the CPA exam. I want to complete my CPA before I begin a Ph.D. program. So, what schools in the Southeast and Southwest fit an academic profile like mine? I know my undergraduate GPA is low. However, I do not believe it is an accurate portrayal of me as a student. I have grown as an adult and scholar since then. What is the best way to demonstrate that to admissions? Thanks for your help!
