  1. Hi, Merry Christmas everyone! I am facing an issue with one of my letter writers. The deadline for my program is 1st January and I had a word with him. It seems he would be able to submit it only by the 3rd of January. Would it be much of an issue or are programs slightly accommodating in this regard. Thanks!
  2. Hello current students,I had a question if you ask referees to create a generic reference letter which they can upload to each school. Most applications have such space for referees to upload thier reference letters rather than typing in. Can the generic letter be on the lines of " in support of applicant xyz applying to your PhD program...."Or do you ask faculty to submit school specific reference letters. This is rather embarrassing to ask as it would take a lot of time for the faculty to tailor reference letter for each school.Any thoughts!!Thanks.
  3. Hello everyone, Thanks for your earlier comments! I have been struggling for the last few weeks on exactly narrowing down on the range of schools I should target. As everyone has suggested I apply widely, I have a small list, kindly spare some time to comment if these would be wise choices (in terms of my competitiveness for acceptance) UBC (Sauder), Utah University (David Eccles), Cornell ILR, Queens, Carlson (Minnesota), Foster School (Washington) Would these schools be realistic shots as I have been able to find a research fit with professors there, or should I move downwards in the rankings? Appreciate any thoughts you might have! Thanks! Profile recap: Undergrad - Bachelor's in Economics (Honours Course), Top undergraduate college for Economics in South Asia, 65 % (Top 3% of class) Graduate - MBA with HR specialization from IIM GPA 3.48/4.33 (4th in the batch) GRE - 322 (V:159 (81%) Q: 163 (87%)) Research Experience - One published book chapter in a special issue Springer publication (peer reviewed) 4 Conference presentations at the top peer reviewed conferences in the country organized by IIM's, MDI and XLRI. Received a best research paper award at one of them Work Experience - Couple of HR strategy internships with focus on HR/Negotiation Strategy and Industrial Relations. Currently working in the HR dept of an Oil & Gas Major letters of recommendation - All three from IIM professors in whose courses I have performed very well. Although not really RAed with them. Hopefully all three would comment positively on my academic performance in their courses. Not sure how much they would be able to comment on my research skills specifically.
  4. Thanks everyone for your kind replies ! I indeed appreciate your time and valuable suggestions. The OB professor knows me well and would even write good things and rate me highly. However, I haven't done any research work with her. She would only comment on my class standing and excellent performance in her course. As of now my choice of referees is as follows: 1 econ professor with whom I have co-authored a case 1 OB professor (whom I am talking about) : performed well in her class Another OB/IR professor. He is a visiting professor at my university and took one of my core IR course. He is pretty excited about my applications. However, all these professors are "Assistant Professors". Should I try for Full Professors (who might not speak very highly about me as they don't know me very closely). Thank you! Looking forward to your suggestions
  5. Hello everyone, I have a choice between selecting a reference letter from an economics professor and an OB professor. However, the economics professor knows me well and would comment very thoughtfully on my potential as a successful doctoral student. However, as I am applying to an OB PhD programme, would it be an issue with an economics professor commenting on my research abilities? Thank you!
  6. Thanks henders! I would definitely try to focus on the programs you mentioned, but would they be realistically achievable with my GRE scores?
  7. Thanks for your time XanthusARES!! I will do some research on finding out professors outside of the top schools working on topics I am interested in !
  8. Hey guys, what about submitting a writing sample which is co-authored? I have published research work but that is co-authored with two other faculty. Is it advisable to submit such work ? Thanks!
  9. Thank you Rsaylors! I always thought that JIBS was more of strategy than adressining OB/HR topics. Thanks! I would have a look at the recent issues!
  10. Thanks for your advice Sb29! I realize that my GRE score would be a constraint, even I have seen this tool, but not sure if schools really use it. Are the GRE cut offs really in the 90% for OB/HR stream as well? I thought OB/HR not being very "quantitative" might have a lower threshold for schools. Anyway any advice if giving GRE again is what would salvage my application or some other way to counter that? Another thing, schools like Smith (Maryland) and Sauder (UBC) mention ideal applicant as someone with 95% scores. DO they really get applicants with such high scores and do they not even open up the application packages of people with lower scores? Any input?
  11. Dear all, I have immensely benefited from the information on this forum and would like to seek your guidance in realistically assessing my chances for selection to various OB/HRM PhD Programmes. So here it goes: Research Interests : Moral dimensions of ethical decision making, role of emotions in negotiations and power posturing, role of workforce diversity in MNC's Undergrad - Bachelor's in Economics (Honours Course), Top undergraduate college for Economics in South Asia, 65 % (Top 3% of class) Graduate - MBA with HR specialization from IIM GPA 3.48/4.33 (4th in the batch) GRE - 322 (V:159 (81%) Q: 163 (87%)) Research Experience - One published book chapter in a special issue Springer publication (peer reviewed) 4 Conference presentations at the top peer reviewed conferences in the country organized by IIM's, MDI and XLRI. One thing that bothers me is that my research topics are typically studied by scholars at mostly top 20 schools. Very few people outside of the top schools study these topics (as per my research). So I am not sure if I should go ahead and apply to the top schools (and jeopardize my selection chances) or slightly modify my interests and target lower ranked schools. Any inputs and suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks a lot!
  12. Hey Bloomburry, This is pretty informative. Would you by any chance have access to such a spreadsheet for last year to see the placement trends (guess like the Marketing guys have a "Who went Where" list) Also is there any definite data available on the faculty salaries. We keep on hearing about the high salaries but can't really ascertain the veracity of such claims! Thanks!!
  13. Hi everyone!! Is there something similar to an academic job posting board for OB/Strategy folks where current job vacancies and job market candidate CV's are posted. Something similar to what is there for PhD in marketing candidates http://marketingphdjobs.org/ It would help some of the prospective candidates evaluate job opportunities for the Management area as well. Thanks!
