  1. What is you opinion on development Economics at McGill ?
  2. Why do you think an undergrad from McGill has a better chance than a Grad student to go into top PhD?
  3. The most helpful post ever ...thank you for this man ... i think I will go with Barcelona then ... it is where I imagine myself studying (given my love for macroeconomics) despite of the brand-name of other schools i got into . I hope you have a great PhD experience at Rice Finance program ...All the best brotha .
  4. Hello guys, I was admitted to LSE(Msc Econ), Barcelona GSE (Msc Econ) , McGill for MA in Economics , and Erasmus Mundus QEM masters . And also Ii got admission to Rice university PhD in Economics . However , I declined Rice , McGill and QEM and I am left to decide between 2 unfunded offers in Barcelona GSE and LSE . My questions are : 1) Which school has a better name in academic circles (and thus a better PhD Placement ? And which is easier to know more famous professors closely? 2) Which school has a better opportunity to make me land on a better job if I ended up not doing a PhD? Does LSE brand-name worth the extra money as its cost are much higher? Thank you very much , I am so confused as I have to decide very soon .
  5. I have just received an unfunded offer from LSE for their Economics Msc ... how do you weigh LSE vs BGSE .... take into account that LSE is much more expensive , is it worth all that extra money ...McGill is out of my calculations now Thanks
  6. How do you define really well in BGSE? top 5% , 10% or what? I think they have an entering class of 70-80 in Economics . Another question is , do you think I should take the PhD advanced core modules at BGSE or just go with the standard macro and micro ? I am quite sure I can get very high grades in the standard courses but I am not sure how i will perform in the advanced once? do you think only people with advanced modules on transcripts can make it to top 20?

  8. What about the masters degree being a terminal degree : which one you think offers you better job opportunities after the master ?
  9. But don't you feel that it is easier to stand out in McGill if you're good taking into account the class is only 20-30 people and student's profiles and talents might be lower than BGSE?
  10. Hello people , I got 2 unfunded offers to Barcelona GSE and McGill University for masters ? who do you think has a better Economics department and better potential placement in top-20 US PhDs ? Thanks
  11. hahahah Hello Catguy ...I re-posted the question to get more opinions
  12. Hello Guys , I hope everything is going smoothly on your side ... I just wanted to take your advice on where I should go to grad school. I applied to several schools around the World. In the US applications ( I applied to 4 PhD programs) , I got a funded offer to the PhD Program at Rice university in Texas. Rice is ranked 48 according to US news PhD rankings and strong in econometrics. However, a problem they have is that they don't have strong placement in Academia In Europe applications , I got several offers for masters and after a process of elimination , I ranked Barcelona graduate school of economics (BGSE) as my first priority school in Europe (unfunded offer though). That is mainly to its unique strength in macroeconomics and Economic Growth which are my main fields of interest . Its economics master program is ranked 3rd in Europe after LSE and Oxford. Also it has great professors (specially in macro and growth like Xavier Sala-i-Martin and Jordi Gali) , plus it has great placement record in US top PhDs after their 1-year masters. I am now trying to decide between one of those two offers. Rice is a great opportunity to proceed directly from undergrad to PhD. While BGSE is a great opportunity to get a taste of high level economics before proceeding to PhD and decide whether I like it or not. Also it is great for improving credentials for admission to a better school than Rice for PhD . Time is not in my calculations (As I am young an willing to spend many years studying ) I would love to know your opinion on the issue and your opinion on how important the department ranking is If I am looking eventually to pursue and Academic Career in the US or at an international organization like IMF . Thank you very much for your opinion and looking forward to hear it .
  13. Thanks a lot for your response , it is super helpful . Final question is : how hard are the advanced modules in macro and micro ? is international economics considered a hard course? Is taking the classical "Macroeconomics" and not the advanced ones enough for getting into MRes and does it look good for PhD applications if I did not continue to MRes ? can you give me a general view on which are hard courses and which are not and what courses do u suggest taking in 2-3 trimesters for a macro/monetary guy like me. ? Thanks a lot again
  14. Thanks for your advice man ... you think I should stay there for 2nd year or just take a year off after the Masters and then reapply? Is it easy to know professors well in BGSE , can you interact with them on personal level and thus get good recommendation letters? Moreover, how much money do you roughly need to survive in Barcelona for one month with average lifestyle ?
  15. Guys , don't you find it weird that Rice had mostly all-micro taxation and corporation placements in the last few year. Not even a single placement in a local fed ... does this indicate weakness in their macroeconomics field in the PhD ?
