  1. Notice that k! mod 10 = 0 for all k=5,6,..,100 since all these factorials include at least 2 and 5 as factors. So, you need only to compute 1-2+3!-4!=-19. Moreover, 1!-2!
  2. My acceptances: 1) Tilburg MRes, but 420 euros scholarship is too little, going to decline 2) UC3M MSc, full scholarship, have to decide until Friday 3) Toulouse (TSE), M2 doctoral track, still unclear regarding the Eiffel scholarship, they keep delaying the announcement which might be even in the next week (too late). I am not sure whether I should ask UC3M for an extension of the deadline My background is metrics, math rather than econ (1 IO, 1 financial, 1 macro, 1 game theory, 2 micro courses) and I would like to ask your opinion about UC3M vs TSE in my case since I might have to decide very fast or maybe it is worth to ask for the deadline extension. So here is my comparison: +TSE because Toulouse > Getafe +TSE for larger scholarship (in case I get it) +TSE because personally French >= Spanish language +TSE for reputation I guess +UC3M because it seems to be somewhat easier to go to US for a year +UC3M for TA position during MSc +UC3M for two weeks of exam period vs one week in TSE +UC3M for many more people in theoretical econometrics and econometrics being their strength in general +TSE for better (non-academic) placement (Bank of France, Luxemburg vs Bank of Turkey, Italy)? +UC3M because I believe that TSE program might be too fast and difficult for me with stronger metrics, math background rather than econ The last two points are the most important. I am also aware of TSE strength in IO, micro, but I only recently realised that I would like a non-academic job after PhD (possibly central banking), although I like theoretical econometrics. So, there is the problem that, as I understand, I also need to choose a field (IO/micro/macro/financial econometrics) to specialise at as an applied econometrician and I cannot decide which, since I like them all for now. For this reason, I do not really care about these fields at this moment since both UC3M and TSE seem to be either similar or strong enough for me in all of them. Thank you for any ideas.
  3. I haven't looked into these schools myself, but based entirely on your pros and cons I, personally, would suggest Bocconi in case you get funding since for me Bocconi pros > Barcelona pros and Bocconi cons don't look that bad.. Then if you don't get funding I guess it depends on how important it is for you, 2 years might be too much.
  4. Finally at least one of my offers became funded (UC3M)! Also, this might be obvious, but what does it mean when besides me and administrative staff my offers are also being sent to some professors? They were interested in me in the admission process or what?
  5. Institution: Tilburg University, CentER Graduate School Program: MRes Economics Decision: accepted Funding: waitlisted Notification date: 2/28/2014 Notified through: email Posted on GC: no Comments: ah.. again funding issues
  6. Institution: Toulouse Program: M2 Economic Theory and Econometrics (Doctoral track) Decision: accepted Funding: TBA Notification date: 12/10/13 Notified through: email Posted on GC: no Comments: first acceptance, was really happy. Not the best interest match and I have some doubts, though. Institution: Tinbergen Program: MPhil Economics Decision: rejected Funding: Notification date: 2/25/14 Notified through: email Posted on GC: no Comments: a bit sad, a bit unexpected. Was my first/second choice. At least now it will be easier to make final decision. Institution: UC3M Program: Master in Economic Analysis Decision: accepted Funding: 0 for now Notification date: 2/27/14 Notified through: email Posted on GC: no Comments: sad and complicates things a bit because funding is necessary for me..
  7. Thanks, I was just replying to the original question.
  8. I haven't received any email from UC3M yet, but today they have updated my "Status" to "Accepted" in the online application (economic analysis program), so take a look.
  9. No, I missed this one. It looks really nice, I am going to take a deeper look and probably to add it to my list, thanks for an offer.
  10. I personally would recommend R for many reasons, see here and here for some answers related to your question. A variety of packages that are available in R is really impressive and there is a large R community on stackoverflow.
  11. Thank you for your response cemolokko. Actually I am looking only at European universities because fees in the US would be too high for me in case I get funding in the first year and lose it after that. For the same reason I consider eliminating a few universities from my list. However, your suggestion is indeed very helpful for me since Michigan State University is very good so it improved my confidence!
  12. Hi, unfortunately I came here with more questions than answers, here is my profile: Type of Undergrad: BSc Econometrics, best in country, almost unknown internationally Undergrad GPA: 9.44/10 Type of Grad: starting MSc Econometrics in the same place Math Courses: Mathematical Analysis I (10), Discrete Mathematics I (10), Algebra and Geometry (8), Introduction to Statistics (8), Mathematical Analysis II (10), Discrete Mathematics II (8), Algebra (7), Selected Topics in Analysis I (8), Practical Econometrics I (9), Probability theory (10), Selected Topics in Analysis II (10), Statistics (10), Econometric Project (10), Statistical Modelling (10), Operation Research (10), Econometrics I (10), Stochastic Processes (9), Official Statistics (8), Macroeconometrics (10), Econometrics II (10) Econ Courses: Microeconomics (6), Macroeconomics (9), Mathematical Economics (10), International Finance (10), Modern Economics Thought (9) Other Courses: Computer based securities trading (10), etc. Research Experience: undergrad thesis will be submitted to peer-review journal, unknown internationally. Co-authoring a paper. Other: data analyst for two years, two international competitions. So in general I am looking for an advice where to apply for the 2014/2015. My initial list of candidates consists of Barcelona GSE, UC3M, CEMFI, Toulouse, Aarhus, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick, Tingergen, Tilburg, Maastrict, also I could stay in my university and take PhD in maths. Moreover, full funding is necessary when tuition fees are higher than the standard of 1.8k~ euros (as in e.g. Tilburg for EU countries) and highly important in general. I would probably apply to PhD programmes where possible (could I do that before finishing MSc?) and also MRes + PhD. I would like to specialise in econometrics, however MRes can be in economics so that I could get a strong background in it. That said, would you advise me to initially eliminate (at least) top universities like Cambridge, Oxford from my list to save money and time? Especially considering 6/10 from microeconomics? I am not sure about my research interests at all. Actually, I did like pretty much everything of what I have faced until now and both applied and theoretical econometrics looks good to me. However, my background in economics (which I do like as well) brings the most uncertainty to my decisions.. I have a feeling that I might have taken too few courses so that I could be prepared for e.g. tough MRes in economics with relatively small amount of maths (or am I wrong?). On the other hand, MRes in economics with core courses containing lots of maths seems fine too me. I would appreciate any advices, especially the ones that would shorten my candidates list.
