  1. Yes I am very concerned about this too. My adviser that told me to go to umich, said the same thing about nyu. Not sure if it is just a rumor, bc both umich and nyu hire lecturers
  2. Hello everyone, I was accepted to UMich LSA and NYU CAS for Economics and Math major. I am having trouble deciding which school is a better option for future Ph.D chances in Econ. I would love to hear from someone who went to either one for undegrad and hear their feedback on the programs, like class availability, engagement with faculty outside classroom, research and RA opportunities. Please PM me! It would really help to make a decision! Thanks
  3. Thank you everyone for advice. as of right now I am still waiting on scholarships from both schools, since neither of them processed my fin aid Strangely enough my advisers at the econ department at my school are split. one tells me to go to umich, and the other adviser tells me to go to nyu. i am leaning towards umich. Does anyone know if economics classes at umich get overcrowded? do the econ faculty tend to engage with undergraduates outside classroom?
  4. Hello everyone, I am glad to say that I was accepted into UMich LSA and NYU CAS for Economics and Mathematics double major. My ultimate goal is to do Ph.D in economics, preferably in econ theory, experimental econ. However, right now I am having trouble deciding which school would offer me the best education to prepare me to apply for Ph.D. Which undergraduate program would be a better choice? I am out of state for umich, so the costs between the 2 would be similar. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!
  5. Thanks for your advice. Faculty at my school tend to discourage students from applying abroad so it is good to hear someone being positive about things. And yes, I am American. Some of my family moved to Europe about 3 years ago so that is what gave me this idea. Plus my university now is located in rural area (it is a great research university and faculty here is great, but the location......). I can't imagine spending 5 more years without public transport.
  6. Phd definitely but I think I would prefer to do my Phd in Europe. Is there a high chance of getting a good placement afterwards in Europe with a European Phd for non-EU citizens?
  7. Hello everyone, I am currently attending a Top 30 econ program in US, according to US news rankings (flagship state university). I am thinking about applying for programs abroad. My profile is here http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/148947-profile-eval-2014-2015-econ-phd.html What are my chances at schools like LSE, Oxford, Tinbergen, Tilburg, CEMFI, Bocconi, SSE, Zurich (all masters)? My main research interests are econometrics, but I also like some behavioral economics. Any advice would help. Thanks!
  8. Is grad complex analysis relevant for economics? What grad courses do you think would give me most advantage?
  9. Thanks so much. It is really helpful!
  10. Do you think my profile is strong enough for top 10?
  11. Thanks for your reply. One prof could def write me a good letter (I worked with him during summer, and it was lots of research and computer work). But others not so much (I took classes with them, received good grades, and we talked about research, thats all). Also I forgot to include a C++ course and probability (fall 2013).
  12. Hello everyone, I am applying either in 2014 or 2015 for Econ Phd programs in US and abroad. Please evaluate and give me any suggestions! I really need advice! My stats Degree: UG at large public university (US) with top 30 econ department double major Math and Econ GPA: Math (4.0), Econ (3.9), overall 3.9 Type of Grad:n/a (planning to take a couple of grad courses in spring) math courses: integral calc (A), calc II with analytic geometry (A), ODE with PDE (A), graph theory (A), real analysis I (A), lin algebra (A), planning to take grad analysis, or grad complex analysis? econ courses: micro, macro (A,A-), intermed macro (A-), labor (A), econometrics (A), fin econometrics (A), some poli sci and philosophy electives, planning grad adv econometrics, and also taking intermed micro (fall 2013) gre: didn't take yet, but expecting above 165Q letters of rec: should be good, all econ profs, doing honors thesis with one of them (chicago phd) research experience: 2 summers spent doing undergrad econ research (one - at my previous school, not well-known undergrad), honors undergrad thesis in econ teaching experience: tutor on campus (mostly math and stats) research interests: econometrics, labor, public economics sop: didn't start yet a little worried since I don't have RA experience. What range of schools should I target and how I could improve my profile? I am also open to spend a couple of years abroad for MA. Thanks!
