  1. Thankyou jrdonsimoni!! That was everything I wanted to know and more.
  2. My main question is if there are any equivalent post-graduate diplomas/conversion courses/2 year courses (entry without an econ background) in Economics in European universities? I have struggled to find them whilst searching online.
  3. Hi All, I graduated with a political science degree in June. I want to pursue a PhD in Economics and so am transitioning via a post-graduate diploma. I have been admitted to Nottinghams post-graduate diploma course this September (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/pgstudy/courses/economics/economics-(conversion)-gdip.aspx) . I am just wondering if there are any conversion courses/post grad diplomas in Europe? (Which will likely be far cheaper than having to study/live in Nottingham.) Also, assuming I pursue the course at Nottingham. How would I get admission onto an MSc in Econ? I would be looking to apply to LSE/Oxford and submit my application before December 2015, for September 2016. However, my application would consist of no prior Economics work, nor any grades. Just wondered if it will be likely to gain admission? I got a 2:1 for my Undegraduate in Politics. Thanks
  4. Hi, Short Background: Left school early because of circumstance and started working. Age of 19/20/21 was store bank manager. Decided to pursue a university degree, however with the lack of A level results my only university offer was from Roehampton University due to my work experience. I graduated with a first class degree in Business Management a year ago and since then have been a manager at one of the big supermarkets. I have looked around and many universities won't classify me as eligible for admission due to my degree. I understand there are entrance examinations and I am willing to undertake these. Just wondering which MBA programmes I should apply to in the UK? Thankyou!
  5. Does anyone know if this has enough maths to get into a strong masters programme (such as oxford/cambridge/lse) after (on the grounds that high grades are attained)? I may use this as a stepping stone into a masters after a politics degree.
  6. Hi, What are the chances of students gaining access to a PhD programme in economics after this programme : https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/economics/coursefinder/msceconomics2yearprogramme.aspx. What would the chances be to get into a top 5 programme on the assumption of getting 70% / a Distinction grade. I know this question is broad and a bunch of other factors come into play like LORS and GRE.
  7. Hi, Just wondered if anyone could recommend reputable online maths courses to make me suitable for a PhD in economics. I live in the UK and have only finished A levels in Maths and Further Maths (A's). My university does not offer courses in maths. Time is not a problem, I am willing to study for the exams in holidays etc. Thanks!
  8. This does seem like the perfect solution!! If I can find a programme similar to the one you suggested that will accept me like sulebrahim said. I am going to start searching now. Like I said previously Kingston was a last resort, so this could save time and money!
  9. Not that, rather that almost all applicants have at least a 2:1 in economics and a thorough understanding of maths. Do you think going to a lowly ranked university would hinder my application to a masters thoroughly. Don't want to appear to not accepting your advice, I have taken it on, but the way the admissions officers have put it to me is that with my current degree I have no chance. There is no options for maths or statistics and we only study political economy? Right now any advice is extremely important because I do need to decide extremely soon!
  10. Yes, definitely a drop-down in university standards. I've emailed the Msc programmes im looking at and they essentially say to me that with my pol/eco BA im getting rejected. I thought that the rank of university wouldn't matter as much for a masters programme as long as I get a first?
  11. Hi, Thanks for the response. You are correct and I was worried about this because the main concern I find in threads is a lack of maths. It is a bit late now to re-apply, and ideally I want to still focus on economics. I will be choosing all the maths modules I can to keep me in the best possible position. Here is a general list of modules I have an option to choose from which are offered, Economics BSc(Hons) - Clearing 2013 entry course - London undergraduate courses - Kingston University London I would have to choose both Econ Quant 1 and 2 and mathematical economics. Does the general gist of it seem strong enough mathematically to get into top tier programmes for econ? Thanks TM, will start asking around as soon as I start.
  12. Also, just wondering what sort of research assistance I would need? And work experience?
  13. A reply already! Yes, my current university mainly focuses on arts. Leaving it after all my hard work was definitely as last option and I looked into so many alternatives which didn't work out. I figure its only a year wasted and now I am determined and focused to do everything in order to get directly to a PhD.
  14. Hi, So have been reading the forum for the last couple weeks frantically and now I know in order to successfully prepare for a PhD in economics I need to do the right things. Was currently studying Politics and Economics BA however there was no maths in this degree and the economics side was only political economy. So now after (wasting) a year in essence I have re-applied for an Economics Bsc which should put me in good position to go for a masters and then a PhD in econ? The degree I am studying is at Kingston university a low-ranked university in England. My aim right now is to get a first and apply for a Msc at Oxford in Developmental Economics and after pursue a PhD in Econ/ Developmental Econ (which is my main interest) in a top university. Would this be possible? Also what sort of work experience would be needed to be done along the way? Would my low ranking university have a big effect on my chances for graduate programmes? Is this route plausible? Thanks a lot!
