  1. First, it’s still early to know the results of this year, so even you see other schools accepting other people, don’t be discouraged. I’m in the same boat and it really upsets when the number of schools I’m still waiting for is down to a number fewer than the number of fingers in one hand. Second, think what can happen in the worst case. You don’t have any schools acceptance this year, but at least you got tons of experience of applying for graduate schools, which can be used for a better application strategy in the next year(s). A friend of mine in college didn’t get accepted in the first year of applying. The person worked as an RA and one year applied again and got accepted to a top school in the field. For me, getting out there to the application is already a small win for me. I hope I’ll still get accepted to some schools this year or I’ll rethink and show up for schools again next year. Probably there is something schools want and I don’t have now, so that year I’ll get to work on it. This is cliche but being accepted is the beginning of the story. Getting in and out with a review or publication is another much bigger thing. And then tenure, and so on. I’m pretty sure other members have more stories to share here as well.
  2. @hngu178: XanthusARES is true. You got a very good chance of being trained well to do research and placed in a good program. Congratz!
  3. Notification Type: Call Interview Institution Name: Minnesota Concentration Applying to: Marketing (Quant) Date of Notification: Feb/08/2018 Type of Notification (e.g., email, phone, snail mail): Email Additional Comments: interview some time next week
  4. Jamie from UTD said offers for Marketing have been sent out.
  5. Thanks for sharing the information. I had interview with them but haven’t heard from them for a while. How many interviews did you have with Texas A&M? And by the way, did they send you an offer?
  6. Same boat here, and I just want to shout out to ask for advice from previous applicants/current Ph.D. students about this issue...
  7. Notification type: Interview Institution name: Texas A & M Concentration: Marketing (Strategy/Quant) Date: January 21 Type: Email
  8. Congratulations on the acceptance! Your acceptance is very early in the application result time. Can you share your experience about your interview with the school? Did you have a feeling that they will accept you right after the interview?
  9. This is so helpful. Which language did you use to make this graph? Any sharing about how you learned to do this?
  10. I am applying for Marketing concentration. Is there anyone hearing about interviews or any status updates from schools?
  11. @XanthusARES: Thank you, I will keep working on adding some more schools and also selecting safe schools carefully. Also, you are right about Rice. I checked the program earlier this year and saw that they may open to recruiting students. However, I recently checked Rice again and saw that they are not accepting Marketing students this year.
  12. Test score: GMAT 750 Q50 V41 Undergrad GPA: 3.6 Economics (several rigorous courses with A and A-, but some with B and B+. I did lots of jobs and internship during my undergrad, which helped me build experience to select marketing but did affect my grades in courses) Graduate GPA: 3.5 (with A- in quant/strategy courses, but also some Bs and B+ in other courses) Research experience: some class research projects in college (not publishable but presented in school conference) and some research assistantship for a professor with research relevant not too complicated responsibilities. Teaching experience: none Work experience: 3-4 internships in marketing and marketing research, mainly marketing and research for managerial purposes Concentration applying to: Quant or Strategy Marketing (Digital Marketing, Customer Satisfaction, and E-commerce) Number of programs to apply: 15 (+/- 3) programs Interested in: Washington St Louis, Wisconsin-Madison, Houston, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Penn State, Temple, UTDallas, UC Berkeley, Rice, Drexel and some other schools I am still reading about. Questions: Could you let me know if my profile is good for Top 20 and Top 50? Which range should I aim for? Which range can be considered safe for my profile? (as Quant candidates concentrated in top schools, I seriously not consider applying to any schools ranking below 90 in the UTD list) Should I add/reduce schools from the list above (as I am thinking that my schools are quite close to each other in terms of ranking - I just chose schools based on faculty research and haven't decided on Dream, Reach and Safe yet) I haven't contacted any professors at the schools above. Do you think that I should contact them now before submission? My weakness is in research experience. How should I improve it in my applications? Thank you so much!
  13. @XanthusARES: Thanks a lot for your insightful opinion! I was so concerned about emailing professors and not getting a reply from them. Sometimes I question whether I should apply for the schools if their professors don't reply to my email. However, I have never thought of the idea to speak with them in person. I will try to meet and speak with professors to understand more about their research interests and to see if they are interested in my research ideas. Thank you!

  16. Hi everyone, I am interested in applying for PhD in Marketing - Quant track (Modelling and Strategy mixed). I read that contacting professors to work with prior to application helps improve the chance to be admitted to a good program and increase the chance to work with the professors the student wants to work with. Could you share your experience or advice on how to contact faculty and start working with them? For students interested in Quant like me, should I find data and propose research to faculty or just describe some topics that I am interested in? How much details should I be prepared to discuss my research interests with faculty so that they can agree to work with me? Thanks
  17. Hello, I am a senior majoring in Economics and minoring in Maths. I have been really interested in pursuing a PhD in Economics, especially in international economics, health, labor and sociology. My Economics classes that I have taken so far are Micro, Macro, International Trade, Money and Banking, Health Economics, Poverty and Discrimination, International Organization and Behavioral Economics. For Maths, I have had Cal I,II, II, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Thinking (a basic course of writing proofs and properties of numbers) and am taking Differential Equation. I plan to take Real Analysis in my last semester and those are all of my Math class. I have not taken GRE yet, and have not had any research experience yet, so am thinking of having a gap year, getting a job or internship to explore and strengthen my knowledge more. Do you suggest me to apply to any programs/ jobs that are useful for my application for grad next year? My professor mentioned that everything you do should tell a story, or fit with your pursuit of getting a PhD if you want it. I am unsure of what types of programs can assist me in this case. Also, talking about RA experience, do you think that there are any programs opening for students of my background to apply for? Usually, I see that they often require students currently enrolling in a bachelor-seeking program or have already had master or pending PhD level. Any suggestions are pretty appreciated! Thanks!
