  1. I know there is the BusinessWeek calculator, but I am not sure how up to date it is considering the page I found it on was from 2001. I know the number's can't be right. Here is why. I currently work for a non-profit and make 42k a year. The cost including tuition/room/board for me would be 65k. It would all be loans. The average salary for marketing grads is 61k. It told me the total cost of my MBA would be 96k, and my breakeven point would be 5 years which can't be right since I will have 65k of costs even before factoring in lost salary. Anyone have an easier way of calculating this or a more up to date calculator? I could have gotten into better with my stats, but my significant other has a very lucrative position in the city that it really would not make sense for her to leave..
  2. My other stats are 5 years of work experience in the insurance industry. I know I should be trying for a better school, but my gf of three years lives in the city and so do I and she has a decent job so she doesn't want to leave..so it was the main reason I applied there. I may have been willing to go to another city, it may now be too late for me to try to apply and receive any kind of scholarship anywhere else. This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth all the way around. I fired off an e-mail back to the admissions director asking for a better explanation as to why I could be in with a scholarship one year and then W/L next year This is what is so confusing My 3.81 GPA Stayed the same My GMAT stayed the same, 690..if I knew it was going to be an issue, I would have retaken it in the meantime. According to last year's class profile, I was in the top ten percent of scorers for that school. I could have maybe brought it up to above 720 if I had thought it would make a difference. My essays stayed the same-obviously they were acceptable last time. My recs stayed the same-obviously no problem with them last time The only difference is the interview. He asked me one question which I may have not answered correctly..don't think it was a bad answer. I have mostly been involved in sales/marketing. He asked me why finance. I told him I have always had an interest in finance-love analyzing financials and keeping track of the market. He asked me why I would want to move away from dealing with customers. I told him the team building and the ability to sell ideas that I learned in sales would assist in almost any area I wanted to work in, including finance. I also told him that in sales I had to analyze data and make quick decisions as to whether or not it was a potentially profitable account. I am not sure if that was a perfect answer-don't think it was worth a waitlist though if everything else was ok. I have six years of work experience-the school takes many kids out of undergrad who have no experience other than waitressing and working at the library or being a front desk clerk at a hotel..I wish I were joking
  3. Here is the situation. I was admitted with a scholarship last year to a local school, Katz. My stats are 690 GMAT and a 3.81 GPA. Just your average white guy.. I could not attend last year due to some personal issues. Last spring/summer I had a health condition which caused me to not be able to swallow correctly or at all..I could not eat solids without feeling as if food was getting stuck.-it was called allergic esophagitis. I started having it in April and it didn't get resolved until early August, only a couple of weeks before orientation started. I didn't think I was going to be able to attend a program since obviously I could not eat in public (would choke and spit) and had to puree and eat soft foods..I could not socialize or network. I developed a fear of choking. The doctors kept on telling me it was acid reflux..finally I got some new German doctor that was familiar with this condition-it is not widely known or understood in the adult population..He fixed me..it took the doctors over 3 months to figure out what the hell was going on. He had to put a balloon in my esophagus and dilated it and then I had to swallow steroids.. Needless to say it wore on me mentally and physically. Then right after that was starting to get resolved,..t I had to help my mother out financially to the tune of $4800 since she had to get her roof fixed. She had been sick and had bad credit-she tried to get a loan, but couldn't. I couldn't let the roof leak. That on top of the swallowing problem was just too much for me to take in one summer. I contacted the admissions office and advised them I DEFINITELY could not attend after that happened. I was hoping to get myself physically better so I could then that family issue hit. I was actually in touch with them all summer summer to let them know about my medical condition. I scanned and e-mailed all of my medical records to them to let them know I was not bullshitting them and making up excuses. I was literally a mess last summer with everything going on. I reapplied this year. Nothing has changed in my application. I went from admission with scholarship to a waitlist. They said the application pool was more competitive...but give me a break..I was in the top tenth percentile in terms of GMAT and GPA last year. I don't think the GMAT Score/GPA could have gone up that much in one year to make me go from an admit with scholarship to waitlist.. The average GMAT for last year's class was 615. They don't grant deferrals..technically it's a reapplication, but the Adcoms review it with the knowledge that I was an admit last year. I am pretty upset about this. It's not like I blew the program off because I felt like it or because I wanted to go bartend on a tropical island. I had issues that anyone else would have deferred with. They knew early in the summer I was having some issues. I didn't drop this on them last minute. I told them I was trying to get myself better. I provided them adequate documentation. I am hoping they would have some humanity and review my application in light of the fact I wanted to go, but just got sidetracked with all of the situations that were going on and were out of my control. I am not sure what to do. I pretty angry. They sort of misled me by indicating that it was ok for me to defer. They told me upfront I may not receive the same scholarship award, but they seemed to imply being admitted to the program would not be an issue. Now I am behind in terms of other applications. I didn't think I needed to apply to any other schools. I didn't even ask anyone to write recommendations for me yet since I didn't see the need to. I am also at a disadvantage in terms of getting any funding from other schools because of this-usually the scholarship deadline is February 1st or around there. I feel they were misleading, whether intentionally or unintentionally, in their presentation of the reapplication process. I am not sure what to do.

  5. That is the reason I was thrown off! It was from a paper test Every single time I added 5 cons.. positive even integers it came out to meet all 3 and hence answer E But since evens can be negative and you can have a sequence that averages to 0 it has to be A
  6. Isn't the first part of this a combination problem? Don't you have to us 6! for the top?
  7. This is from a paper test Above text of problem is chart showing number of games each team won Team A 4 Games Team B 7 Games Team C 9 Games Team D 2 Games Team E 2 Games Team X This is what you have to solve for According to the incomplete table above, if each of the 6 teams in the league played each other twice and there were no ties, how many games did Team X win? (Only two teams play in a game) A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 8 E. 10 The answer is I have no clue how to do this one ! ha:)
  8. Actually 0 would have to be even if we include the set of negative numbers The average of -4,-2,0,2,4 is 0 Hence, it is an even number, a least from what I have seen on google.
  9. Gotcha now it makes sense... I wasn't aware of that I knew 0 was even. I didn't know negative numbers could be even
  10. I was able to get the problem right via plugging in the answers until I got the right one.. But I want to learn if there is a technique for this one A company wants to spend equal amounts of money for the purchase of two types of computer printers costing $600 and $375 per unit respectively. What is the fewest number of computer printers that the company can purchase? A. 13 B. 12 C. 10 D. 8 E. 5

  12. If X is the average of 5 consecutive even integers, which of the following is true I. X is an even integer II. X is a nonzero integer III. X is a multiple of 5 A. I Only B. III Only C. I and II only D. I and III only E. I, II, and III The answer is However, I thought it was C... Where did I go wrong? Can negative numbers be even?
  13. One other problem I see.. Is equation B only gives you the ratio for Democratic Women to Republican males. However, the question asks for the ratio of total number of males to females. Does the answer still say the same?
  14. oh crap..it was simply asking for a ratio! I was trying to figure out the actual number
  15. All of the members of club U are either Democrats or Republicans. If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club? 1. In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members. 2. In Club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members I got the question right by guessing, not really guessing per se, but making an educated guess. How do I do it mathematically? The answer is
