Other: Applying to: Boston College, UNC - Chapel Hill, CU - Boulder, UC - Santa Cruz, Univ. of Oregon, UMass - Amherst RESULTS: Acceptances: UNC, Oregon, Colorado Waitlists: Rejections: Boston College, UCSC, CEMFI, UMass Amherst Pending: Attending: UNC Comments: I think I did reasonably well. UNC or Boston College were the best schools I applied to. I'm happy to have been accepted into one of them. What would you have done differently? If I could have afforded another semester of undergrad I would of taken more math. Unofrtunately by the time I realized I wanted to pursue a PhD, I only had v. few electives left, and needed to take 2 summer classes to get linear algebra in. Also, I would have applied to at least 4 more schools. I did not realize how unpredictable admissions could be. At the beginning, I only thought I would get into my alma-mater UMass, who rejected me. So I was surprised to have been accepted to 3 schools better than UMass.
  2. Anyone else bummed is 6pm est on the 15th and still waiting on wait list decisions? Certainly does not bode well.
  3. I think you stand to benefit from diversifying your network.
  4. I talked to the GDS at UNC. She told me that schools were being rather conservative this year with offers. If those schools haven't rejected you yet, I'm guessing you're on the waitlist, and it is not out of the realm of possibility of getting an acceptance. I'm not really expecting to hear anything until the 15th.
  5. Pretty sure UNC is around $15.2k per year. One guy on grad cafe mentioned he got offered a $5k bonus upon completion of the first year.
  6. Anyone attend Oregon's visit day? What were your impressions?
  7. Institution: University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Program: Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: Waitlist Notification date: 04-01-2014 Notified through: Phone Posted on GC (thegradcafe.com): Yes Comments: This was my top school!. Hope I get funding.
  8. Received an email from a UNC professor saying that the admission & funding process is wrapping up, and wanted to inquire if I was still interested in the program. Anyone else get this email?
  9. Can anyone who attends CU confirm this?
  10. Quality of life aside, would I be crazy to attend Boulder unfunded over a funded offer at Eugene? To Studentloaner: I was told I was "approximately 30".And to quote what the director said about funding years 2-5, "Although nothing is ever promised for certain, since I have been here 100% of the students who have successfully completed the “core” exams given at the end of the first year have then been funded in their remaining years. So, yes, this is possible and highly probable." Hope that helps.

At the moment I have two unfunded offer, both offering guaranteed funding for years 2-5. If money wasn't an option I would obviously choose Boulder. They are much better in development economics, slightly better overall, and I'd much much rather live in Boulder than Eugene. Sometimes I think even if I end up getting offered funding at Eugene, I'll regret not taking the opportunity to live in Boulder for the rest of my life. On the other hand, the cost of living in Eugene is far cheaper, placements are fairly similar with both schools having mostly private research and liberal arts schools. Each has one stellar placement in the last 3 years or so. The funding situation at Boulder is well defined. I have a chance at partial funding as I come in, but might not know until "a week before classes start". If I do well the first semester I might get partial funding for second semester. If I pass prelims with a 3.0 gpa or better I'm guaranteed partial-funding for years 2-5, full funding with a 3.5+. At Oregon, I am ranked 30th, where 12 offers are to be made. If I fail to get an funding now, I don't think I will receive any mid-year. I've been told every unfunded students who passed prelims with a solid GPA (I'm guessing 3.0+) receives funding for years 2-5. There is also a solid chance I'll be offered a job as a business analyst in Boston doing statistical work on boring subjects, I don't think it'll improve my profile, but it would nice not to be poor for a while. I'm waiting to hear back from an RA position, but not optimistic. Do you guys think the prelims are of equal difficulty at both schools? I recently passed a financial mathematics actuarial exam, the hardest test I've taken so far for reference. Any idea how realistic my chances of getting partial funding at boulder? Thanks.

  13. EDIT: Let me rephrase this. I was told I was ranked 30th at a school that is able to fund 12 incoming students, so I would not be receiving a first-round funding offer, but am in the running for a second-round offer. What do you think the chances are of me receiving a funding offer?
  14. No just CEMFI. I think I might also apply to Bonn.
  15. Please keep us informed when you hear back Patho!
