  3. Age, to some school, matters. None of the schools, however, will make a mention--directly; though, it might not be difficult to read between the lines about school selection criterion through various data points available on its website. Objective parameters such as age, grade, GRE are usually available on the schools website, and serve a good indicator of your fit with the cohort. Some schools prefer younger folks (due several reasons -- high grades & GRE, ability to devote more 'time' to lab etc), whereas some schools such as IOWA, U of A, UNC at Chapel HIll, & TAMU have students (at least in the Management Department) who are in their late thirties or even forties. Some schools perhaps may question the propensity of a candidate to fight for 'tenure' as mentioned by @myself, at the same time, several schools value the richness of research ideas, network to collect data, and ability to relate to MBA students--a potent statement of purpose and your LOR's can counter the former and highlight the latter. Despite the above, I would suggest, if feasible, do reach out to the faculty members (especially the older assistant and associate Professors) and visit the schools to get a feel of the place. You would know for sure whether the school is open to older candidates, and even more important, whether you belong there and would want to spend your next five years. Post Script: I am one of the older candidate and have been in the industry for more than 15 years. Please PM me in case you are looking for any further information.
  4. You may also consider pursuing a Masters in the US / Europe. While pursuing a Masters you will not only be trained well, but will also have the opportunity to pursue research with faculty members, and also earn strong letters of recommendations. This year, some of the good european schools were offering fully funded Masters Program.
  5. Hi, Are you going ahead with J1,or have you settled with F1. I too have a family (wife & two kids) and was hoping to get a J1, so that my wife can work. I too was of the view that PhD students can be eligible for a J-1 visa (due to at least 50% of financial support from a scholarship, fellowship or assistantship from an external funding source). However, the possibility that J-1 visa holders can be subjected to a two-year home country physical presence requirement, is troubling. From what I understand, you can be subjected home country physical presence if you receive any funding (including nominal travel grants) from your home government or a U.S. government agency. It can also apply if you have a skill that is on the U.S. government's "Exchange Visitor's Skills List." To review the list of countries and skills appear on this list, please review Department of State website Exchange Visitor Skills List>. An exchange visitor who is subject to this requirement must reside for an aggregate of two (2) years in his or her country of nationality or last legal permanent residence or have the requirement waived before being eligible for other U.S. immigration statuses, including H, L or permanent resident status. While, my country (India) does not list PhD in Management as a skill that requires a 2 year residency in India, but I am not sure if fellowship from my University would lead to two year physical residency in my home county. Hence I am in a fix. Any one on this forum, who is not a US citizen and has pursued a PhD on a J1 visa, kindly share your views. Thanks!
  6. I agree. Andrew Hayes recent book (Process...) is great. His add in for SPSS, allows you to run moderation, mediation, and their several combinations, with click of a button -- and uses just the mean of each construct. One needn't do mean-centring, create interaction variables etc. This book does a great job of explaining the basics, and offers detailed explanation of several types of analyses.
  7. Admission Year: 2015 Test Used for Admittance: GRE Test Scores: 327, Quant 168 (95%), Verbal 159 (81%) Industry Experience: Several Years in Oil and Gas Industry and in a Business School Grades: Undergrad 62%, Grad 64% (No GPA system) Research Experience: Research Associate - 1 Year; I paper under R&R at an A publication, conference presentation at AOM and SPSP; Concentration Applied to: Management (OB) Schools Applied to: 4 in top 10, 7 in top 20, 4 in top 50 Outcome: 5 interviews (2 in top 10, 2 in top 20, 1 in top 50); 2 Accepted; 9 Rejected; 4 withdrawn Comments: These comments are largely focussed towards International candidates whose undergrad and grad schools and the grading systems may not be easily comparable in US. Test Scores: Crack it above 95 PC, especially if you are aiming for top 20 schools. In my case I was rejected at one top 20 school without interview and at a T-10 and another T-20 post interview because of my undergrad and grad school grades (received this specific feedback from people I knew at both the schools). Research Interests: Knowing well the research conducted at the schools you are applying to takes some time, and ideally one should complete this exercise before writing the SOP. This will help you not only with your rationale for applying to that school, but also demonstrating your understanding of research conducted at that department and your potential fit in your SOP and during the interview. Bottomline: During this process, I visited several univeristies across the US, and met the PhD coordinators at these schools. Some of the coordinators were candid about their application pool; at three T-10 schools, the coordinators mentioned about the four buckets (Ivy League - High Grades, Ivy League - Low Grades, Other schools - High grades, Other schools - Low grades) of applicants, and mentioned that often admissions team doesn't have to go beyond the first bucket. Ofcourse, this may not be representative of most the schools, hence I felt, to qualify the first cut, an applicant should be atleast average on most of objective hygiene factors, and have atleast one or two spikes. These spikes may be perfect GPA, very high test scores, research publications, research experience or a combination of these. In my opinion, SOPs and the 'content' of the reco letter matters only after the first cut. Reflection: Each grad student perhaps "costs" approx $ 400,000 to the school, hence schools are looking for credible signals from the applicants. Different schools value different types of signals, and even that criterion is not fixed; since the applicaton evaluation criterion is so unpredicatable, hence, the long held suggestion to apply widely. I may be wrong, but I feel, with more than 100 applicants for 3 - 5 positions, schools just need a reason to reject 85 out of the 100 applicants; those who survive the first cut are perhaps subjected to greater scrutiny and vetoed down or wooed by the faculty as a group. So brace your self for uncertainty and learn to accept the low odds of this process.
  8. Oikos and the University of Zurich are inviting applications from qualified candidates for an oikos PhD Fellowship at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, starting in September 2015. 9. I would say find your fit with the department and individual professors. Also check out placement of recent grads. Stern's OB and OT has been fairly well known; not so sure about Strategy. Recent addition of Pankaj Ghemawat certainly bolsters the department. INSEAD Strategy certainly is a top notch department. Phanish Puranam, Jasjit Singh, Henric Greve, are all extremely well published and well regarded researchers. INSEAD entrepreneurship is a recent reorganization of Strategy and OB department, however, one can fairly easily shift from one stream to the other. Though the placement record of Entrepreneurship may be hard to find. Further, INSEAD pays really well to the PhD students, and one has the option to join either Fonti or SIngapore campus. Further, INSEAD students can study at Wharton as exchange student (I think for 1year). Overall, I would say very close call between two schools. In my conundrum of choosing offers between school, the advice I received suggested me to focus on (and in that order) 1. Research fit 2. Ability to get along with faculty members in that school 3. Ease of access and mentoring by faculty 4. Rank in that field 5. Funding Above five represent the common points suggested by folks who are Full Professors, at T10 - 25 schools. Wishing you the very best!

  11. As Xan said, it is extremely unlikely. However if you are very keen, you may try you luck with the schools where the deadlines are just past (for eg. 15th march). If luck shines on you, the school may accept your application. (In my case I was able to get my application accepted at two failry high ranked schools whose December deadlines I had missed to due my oversight)

  14. Hi, I am not sure of ways to find information beyond university's website... Perhaps @Sheetrockero, who has done a fantastic job of tracking 'who went where' can help...
  15. Congratulations for your offers; I would perhaps look at the following: 1. Department: Fit with the research interests of faculty members; Do faculty members work with each other; Does senior faculty mentor junior faculty and do they publish together; Do PhD students get authorship on papers or they are just "thanked for their excellent research associate skills" 2. Past record of student placement, and productivity of students after they are placed 3. Size of cohort, faculty - student ratio -- higher the better 4. Location 5. Stipend 6. Any other personal consideration Wishing you the best in choosing between schools and also for hearing from other schools
  16. This is a bit frustrating; however some schools argue for the stipend you receive you may have to teach classes, hence these schools use TOEFL to ensure that a certain bar is crossed. Flimsy and CYA reason, but...
  17. If not now, one can defintely aim for "that" school after a few years!
  18. This is a frustrating phase... And unfortunately there are no easy shortcuts... Have been through this phase, so can comiserate... Where all are you waiting response from?
  19. Each school usually outlines conditions in which it can offer a waiver. Some schools go by the book (such as Arizona State University), whereas some would not even want an official score till you are admitted (such as Rotman, TAMU)--plus they also highlight conditions (GRE veral above a particular criteria, your english speaking / comprehension skills tested during interview) underwhich they can waive the requirements. But such cases are far and few, and you perhaps would not like to choose schools based on this criteria. For Grad schools, TOEFL is a hygience factor and whether the applicants like it or not, most have to bite this bullet.
