    Who are you? : )

Don't worry, Lukas! Just relax and forget about the exam now. The way you describe it, I think you must have written a great essay - not the least bit off topic. All the best! :) Dingus
  2. Biomedical Engineering? Or Biomedical as in Biology, Medicine and allied fields? You may have to elaborate a bit more on your profile for meaningful responses. For a start, you could: 1. Clarify which major you would like to pursue. 2. Previous Undergraduate/Graduate major 3. Other parts of your application for eg: --Your CGPA --Area of research specialization 4. What kind of help are you looking for, exactly? --Choosing appropriate universities? --Making your profile look good? --Advice on whether to re-take the exam or not? I notice that your earlier posts indicate that you are thinking of applying to a University called "UTA". Does that mean you are aiming to apply for the Fall 2005 session or the Fall 2006 session? As Thoreau once said:"Simplify. Simplify. Simplify." Not only for your sake but for everyone else's sake too. ;)
  3. That is sheer wicked genius!! :D
  4. HAHA. LOL. :D Isn't that the case with many things in life, though. ;) Complicated and impressive but totally worthless. Such false pride all of us have.
  5. So it is an undergraduate class which anyone could opt for, right?
  6. You will need one of the latest versions of real player integrated with your browser. PS: I just remembered one very interesting thing from the lecture. The professor says he had breakfast at 4.00 AM and that the reason he gets up that early is that he has four kids - two of them being 3.5 year old twins. WOW. After so much stress in the morning the guy still manages to sound so enthusiastic and interesting. If that is not sheer and unbelievable dedication to teaching, well ... what is?????!! I personally know of some horrid professors who would make any excuse to let out the class 1/2 an hour into the lecture. And they would have wasted the half hour that they did "teach" droning and lazily reading from the transparencies on the overhead projector word for word and not caring whether the students grasped anything or not. No, in fact they would yell or frown at you if you dared ask a question. They would loathe even lifting a piece of chalk to the board and use it instead to throw at unfortunate kids who couldn't stand their hideous self-monograph and dropped off for a minute. :yuck: PPS: Was this a graduate mol-bio core class? Or an introductory session? Or an undergraduate class?
  7. I suppose you can always raise your hand and ask for more pencils during the PBT or no? Perhaps some PBT test-takers will deign to reply?
  8. Great Lord! I watched the entire lecture --from start to finish and some things hit me with rather a blinding realisation. 1. I LOVE GOING BACK TO SCHOOL!!!! LOVE IT more than I can ever say! 2. That professor (the mol-bio) one is AMAZING. I remember having crammed through this entire course material years ago and not having enjoyed it at all. My teacher was DULL as a SQUID or even worse. He didn't care. He stood at the lectern the whole time with a big pointer and pointed to the overhead projector THE WHOLE HOUR! He made us all nod back to sleep at 8:15 in the morning - just 15 freaking minutes into the lecture! And this guy was more alive than a whole bunch of professors I have seen. He was so involved in what he taught! I just have no words to describe how wonderful the lecture felt; how immensely wonderful his explanations and his enthusiasm for the subject were. Those students in his class - they must be blessed. TOTALLY blessed to have such professors! I know I am probably starting to sound like very repetitive parrot but are all professors at Berkeley like him? In class? WOW. Erin, THANKS SO VERY MUCH for linking the lecture. I felt SO good sitting through that hour of enzyme structures and pathways. It was awesome. It makes me wish September were here tomorrow and I could sit in on classes again and learn all over again and enjoy! I am actually going to get a chance this fall and I just realised just how SORELY I missed being a student! :D Thanks so much! 3.The guy who took the laptop? HE IS AN IDIOT! Period. How can anyone even think of stealing question papers when one has wonderful classes like these? How can anyone not remember what was taught in class even months later if classes were so brilliantly instructive and happy? I can't understand this at all. GOD. I wish I could trade places with that stupid confused mess of an excuse for a student and tell him what not being a student anymore and in a serious job is like.
  9. :) Precisely. Nerve Degeneration leads to memory losses. Fortified Vitamin B complexes stall this process and heal the nerves. So, in essence, if a normal young person with no disease or nerve damage takes fortified Vitamin B, there is no benefit to the memory processes at all. The former mental acuity stays as it is; it does not undergo a boost. If I have weak memory and take a whole bottle of Neurobion, my capacity to remember things will stay as it is. I will certainly not go from weak to worse, however, I won't suddenly aquire the ability to cram and remember the entire Encyclopedia Britannica either. This again is proved by activity of cells. It depends on how many times do the dendrites of different neurons interact/touch each other in unit time. When a person thinks, this activity increases. People who do brain excercises by solving riddles or some mathematical problems, neurons interact with each other. As far as differences are concerened, it depends on practice and experiences of the brain. The brain takes into account of previous decisions and analyses the results accordingly. This practice develops with time. As an analogy, consider a body builder vs a normal person. Body of the former has full grown muscles , thus his relfexes work quickly. For the latter, with same body mass, relfexes won't be as fast as that of former. Moreover, he gets tired easily. I agree. Absolutely. I couldn't have elaborated in better words. Instead of taking ineffective medication to boost memory, what you describe here is a perfect way to boost it. Thinking and "brain exercise" don't merely stall degeneration. They sharpen a person's mental acuity thus actually improving the information retention capacity of the person's brain. As explained above. Many factors are responsible. Analytical ability is also dependent on past experiences that brain uses while taking any descision. If you note, for a simple problem, everybody will think equally but deper thinking and analysis differs as brain refers to past experiences.(It is like a feed back mechanism). :2cents: Hence, as many factors are responsible for memory performance some of which are so nicely explained by you, I would recommend that prescription drugs like Neurobion are best confined to prescription alone and not subjected to an over-the-counter treatment. PS: Just wondering if you have ever heard of an entity called: Transient global amnesia. Also wondering if you are aware that severe emotional trauma, and certain chemicals which don't, in the least, cause nerve degeneration can lead to transient (and sometimes leading to permanent) loss of "memory power" or mental acuity.
  10. Exactly. Neurobion is a prescription fortified B complex for the conditions mentioned in the first link. That's right, but are they solely responsible? Nerve degeneration may occur as a result of disease or ageing. How do you account for the fact that two individuals in the same age-group have different memory skills, given the fact that neither of them are wracked by disease? If memory were a function of nerve degeneration alone, then all of us should have no perceptible difference in memory and should technically be answering Brasileira's question with the same response, don't you think?
