  1. Hi guys, To anybody that has gone or is going to TSE: How does one talk to the administration there? I have tried emails, but those never get replied, so I am assuming that is not the way. Additionally, while we are at it, I have some questions for the administration there, but since I cannot contact them, perhaps some of you may help. Does Acceptance into the M1 grant you a place in the M2? By this I mean, do I have to apply to the M2 separately next year, or if I pass the M1 do I get a place in the M2? All my research seems to suggest that the latter applies, as I don't think the M1 awards you with any degrees. Any other information that you think may help me would be appreicated. Thank you.
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Economics (Hons) & Philosophy minor Undergrad GPA: 3.66 Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 162 Verbal, 155 Quant, 4.5 AWA Math Courses: Business Calculus (A-), Statistics I (A), Statistics II (B+) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Macro/Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro/Micro (B+), Introductory Econometrics (B+), Game Theory with some Linear Algebra (A-), Behavioral and Monetary Economics (currently taking those) Other Courses: A Few courses in Political Theory for my minor (A-), currently taking Corporate and International Finance Letters of Recommendation: Ended up asking my math professor for a reference, took all my math courses with him, except calculus. He made me shine, I know. And I asked another teacher, senior member of the department, he taught me intro macro, Behavioral, Economic History and Econometrics, and I guess he made me shine too! He was the faculty member that knew me best, and he helped me out with the SOP as well. He also has textbooks on Managerial and Behavioral Economics out there. Research Experience: RA for Dean of School for about a year, RA for another professor for almost two years now. Also co-edited a book on Environmental Economics in Latin America, if it's relevant here. Teaching Experience: None. Research Interests: Monetary Policy, Game Theory and Asymmetric information SOP: I expressed to the adcom that I have never been good at math, but that I am working torwards becoming the best at it. My school does not offer many math courses, but I took all the available ones, and I excelled in them. I also did some solid research during my time as an undergrad. I RA'd for two members of faculty; and I there is a book on Latin American environmental economics out there I co-edited during my internship. I would say my strongest point is that I helped the dean of the Business school here to edit a chapter of a forthcoming book edited by B. Mak Arvin. Concerns: I was initially very concerned that my poor math background would keep me from entering the program I wanted to. This was not helped by the fact I pretty much bombed my GREs, lol. Other: Applying to: TSE (M1 ECOSTAT), BGSE (MSc Econ Finance), Tilburg (MSc Mathematical Economics & Econometrics), Bonn (MSc Economics), Tufts (MSc Econ), UBC, Simon Fraser, U Toronto, Warwick & LSE( MSc Mathematical Economics & Econometrics). Accepted to: TSE (only finished my Tilburg app aside from this one) Attending: TSE (it was my top choice any way, so I am not gonna apply to the other schools I intended to.).
  3. Just wanted to follow up on this thread. I just got an offer to do the M1 ECOSTAT at TSE. So I guess my GRE scores were not that important,
  4. Thank you for your reply. Perhaps for Tilburg I would have, but I needed to submit my TSE to qualify for the Eiffel Scholarship this Monday. Also, I am going to be writing my disseration next semester and am heavily involved in school activities, so finding time to do 4 classes, a senior thesis, raise my GPA and keep my extracurricular committments would not have been possible had I needed to invest 3-4 hours every day to get a decent GRE quant in the spring. Honestly, if I don't get in I'll try again next year. I've been watching Rudy to keep me motivated. I need to believe that the adcoms are not so myopic as to judge human potential by a percentile score. Thanks for your insight guys.
  5. Thanks for the responses guys. I sent my application in anyway. Do you think I can make the pre-Master's? Also could anybody tell me about TSE they got my application tody. Thanks to all!
  6. Would they even look at my application you think? No time left to retake thr GRE TSE app goes out tomorrow.
  7. Hi, I just checked for my official GRE scores. I got 162 Verbal, 155 Quant, 4.5 AWA. Do I have a chance at the M1 at TSE, and the RM Economics at Tilburg? Thank you.
  8. Hi guys, I posted my profile on the forums a while ago. I have given great thought to what the members of this community have given me. I am very thankful for that. Initially, I wanted to apply to the top PhD programs in the US. I reconsidered after I realized I lacked the basic math courses to continue on to a PhD directly from my BA. I decided against spending approximately $800 in apps just to get insta-rejected from all the tops programs. I have decided to apply for an MSc instead. I am looking at schools that have good placements at top programs, while being able to afford going there. I want to put up my profile again, as I have changed my outlook on things, mainly my GRE scores. I am taking the test on Friday, and I am not scoring what I have expected. I think, conservatively, I can make 155 in both sections. A stretch (my aim) would be 160 in both. I think this, and my poor math background are my main worries. Therefore, I look at my profile below, and please let me know what you think my chances are, in terms of getting in/funding/etc. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Economics (Hons) & Philosophy minor Undergrad GPA: 3.66 Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: N/A GRE: Looking at maybe 155 V/Q Math Courses: Business Calculus (A-), Statistics I (A), Statistics II (B+) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Macro/Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro/Micro (B+), Introductory Econometrics (B+), Game Theory with some Linear Algebra (A-), Behavioral and Monetary Economics (currently taking those) Other Courses: A Few courses in Political Theory for my minor (A-), currently taking Corporate and International Finance Letters of Recommendation: I am positive I can get an excellent letter of recommendation from my macro teacher. I was his RA for about a year and a half now. I have another teacher with which I have had a few classes and I think I can get a pretty good recommendation from her as well. I am undecided between choosing the Dean of the school or one of my philosophy teachers for my third one (my philosophy teacher has had more class time with me, but I have been RA for the Dean so not sure which one to go for.) Research Experience: RA for Dean of School for about a year, RA for another professor for almost two years now. Also co-edited a book on Environmental Economics in Latin America, if it's relevant here. Teaching Experience: None. Research Interests: Monetary Policy, Game Theory and Asymmetric information SOP: I guess I will talk about my research experience, and the fact that I literally dream of going to these schools. Concerns: I guess I addressed these above Other: Applying to: TSE (M1 ECOSTAT), BGSE (MSc Econ Finance), Tilburg (MSc Mathematical Economics & Econometrics), Bonn (MSc Economics), Tufts (MSc Econ), UBC, Simon Fraser, U Toronto, Warwick & LSE( MSc Mathematical Economics & Econometrics). Could you guys tell me what you think about me getting into these programs? Thank you very much.
  9. Hi guys, I wanted some advice on how to pick a dissertation topic for next semester. I would like to get a jump start on this before January so I at least have done some reading by semester start. I want to choose a topic that would allow me to use some Eviews to practice with, but everything that seems to interest me is very complicated. I have looked on the internet for dissertations to see what other people write, and their topics are so cool! I would like to know how they come up with them. Anyway, if you guys have any suggestions on where I could look for inspiration, I would be very thankful. I am particularly interested in Game Theory & Monetary Economics. Thank you in advance.
  10. Hi, I just started going through my Manhattan 5lb book, in preparation for my GRE on November 14. I am realizing that there are a lot of really difficult words in the text completion and sentence equivalence sections. I was wondering if it is advisable to use a dictionary whilst doing the practice or does that just beat the purpose of doing the practice in the first place? I ask because sometimes the choices have words that are so obscure that I can't narrow the choices past 2 or three options. What do you think I should do? Thank you.
  11. Hi, So a few days ago I posted my profile on the PhD forums. The responses I got were that my maths background may seriously jeopardize my application to the tops PhD programs. I have looked around and added some more schools I will be applying to for a Master's. I wanted to know if there were any schools that provide full funding for a Master's degree in economics anywhere, with a good chance to go for a PhD at a top university. Please find below my profile: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Economics (Hons) & Philosophy minor Undergrad GPA: 3.66 Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: N/A GRE: Taking it this November, but let's assume I get 90th percentile marks on verbal and quantitative Math Courses: Business Calculus (A-), Statistics I (A), Statistics II (B+) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Macro/Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro/Micro (B+), Introductory Econometrics (B+), Game Theory with some Linear Algebra (A-), Behavioral and Monetary Economics (currently taking those) Other Courses: A Few courses in Political Theory for my minor (A-), currently taking Corporate and International Finance Letters of Recommendation: I am positive I can get an excellent letter of recommendation from my macro teacher. Also co-edited a book on Environmental Economics in Latin America, if it's relevant here. Teaching Experience: None. Research Interests: Monetary Policy, Game Theory and Asymmetric information SOP: Not sure what this is. Concerns: Well, my main concern is that my maths are pretty meager. If I get rejected for the PhD programs I want to apply for it may be because of that. My school is also very small and unknown, and doesn't produce many noteworthy economists. Other: Applying to: University of Maryland College Park (PhD), MIT (PhD), Columbia (PhD), Princeton (PhD), LSE (PhD); also Oxford (MA), Cambridge(MA), Duke (MA), Warwick (MA), NYU (MA) I have also added to my list of MA programs Tufts and Fordham in the US, and also Tilburg, UCL, Universite catholique de louvain, UBC and Toronto in Canada, and BGSE. Do you think that I can take some schools out/ put others in? I will still apply to my PhD programs, but if I can get into a master's without any funding, I don't really see the point in applying. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. cfrv
  12. In my calculus course we went through both differential and integral calculus up until the fundamental theorem and partial differentiation. For Game Theory we did continuous game nash equilibria which involved some calculus as well, and we did some linear algebra up until Markov processes. For my Stats course we covered normal, binomial, poisson, chi-square, t and f distributions, until linear regression. In Econometrics, the furthest we got was dummy variable multiple regression. For my economics courses we got to game theory on micro, with Bertrand competitiveness and infinitely repeated games. In Macro we did the IS-LM model, and the AD-AS model as the main thing. I am aware that my maths are sub par but would that really undo my application? If I tried for lower ranked schools, would that change anything? What can I do to improve my chances of getting into the program I want? Thank you.
  13. Hi, I would like to get feedback from some like-minded people on my chances to get into grad school. I'll just post my profile and have you guys judge for yourselves. Are my expectations farfetched? If you think so, please advise me on how I can improve my profile. Thank you.
