  1. Does anyone here have a waitlist or an offer from Maryland?
  2. Nope. Asking for a friend who is not on any forum!
  3. I think it would be unwise to expressly talk about why your grades were low, at least in the SOP. If you admit that you made a wrong decision and when you realized it spent the time in IIMA being aimless, that doesn't really look good to the AdCom. They might argue that there is no proof that the PhD is something you will pursue wholeheartedly and that is not once again a wrong decision. You should never give AdComs reasons to disregard you. Words like "aimless", "mistake" are not good signals. Having said that, some schools also ask you to submit an additional essay. That might be the place to write about your IIMA decision, but don't use negative words and try to put in forward in a mature manner. Also, this is a cultural thing, but there is a lot difference between how the US looks at mistakes, and how Europe does. I have noticed that US is more open about admitting mistakes and giving second chances. This was not the case in India. I would ask you to carefully study each school you intend to apply to, and then decide how you should write your SOP.
  4. I know for a fact that even in India, the BA Economics programs are very mathematically rigorous.
  5. I actually know an Indian student who is currently pursuing her Economics PhD in one of the top programs in US. Key points of difference that made her profile stellar: 1. She has an Economics under-graduate degree from India 2. She did a Masters on Economics from a top program that acts as a filter for PhD admission 3. She is doing a Business Economics PhD in a Business School. While, all of these may not necessarily work for you. It is true that for an Economics PhD, you will need a Masters in Economics or Econometrics. Most US universities offer very good Business Economics programs. Also, many Economics PhD candidates end up not going into academia (Just from what I have seen). Economics academia (at least in the US) is populated by top economists from SEC, the Fed etc. People finish the PhD, join a think-tank or other organization, and come back into academia later. I would suggest looking at the faculty of some of the schools you are interested in and see what they have done before and after their PhD. I would also suggest the same for students of the schools you are targeting.
  6. This is the forum for Marketing, and not OB. And to be honest, all the Departments don't make decisions the same way. So, what may be true for OB, may not be true for CB or Quant and vice versa.
  7. Please clarify which Department (Quant, CB) you mean. We all know from GC that Insead has already given offers for some other Departments.
  8. Really? Even for CB? I wonder if anyone on this group got in at Maryland.
  9. Sorry, but I always get confused. UMD is Maryland or Minnesota Duluth?
  10. Not yet. They said it will take a week or so for them to deliberate. Have you heard anything?
  11. Oh yeah! Last admission cycle most of the schools only started giving out interviews in the second week of February. I am fairly certain that the same will happen this year too. Only weird thing is that USC had a super early priority deadline, and even some other programs had a December deadline. The thing with even 2 people getting an interview invite is that you still end up hearing some news about the program. I also don't think any of them will interview just 2. :) So, some hopes there!
  12. Does anyone have any news about London Business School? This year a lot of the early application date programs seem to be very delayed with interviews and shortlists.
  13. Congratulations. :) Don't mean to question your decision of not revealing the school, but there are plenty of anxious people on this forum. I think its helpful if someone atleast gives a better clue about the school. I undersand why you would be reluctant to, but the point of this forum is to inform and not make everyone anxious. :) That's my two cents.
  14. Actually I am interested in marketing strategy, but I would also expect to do some Quant work. Did the professor state that the email he or she sent is the official interview? Good luck with the interview!!! Actually, he didn't clarify that. But, I checked with a few other Profs and this seems fairly common. My email subject did say PhD application - Next Step. I am a CB candidate by the way.
