  1. Hi All, I am soon going to finish my Master's in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Biosystems engineering (Biotech related). And am confused as to what my next step should be- a PhD. or a job followed by MBA? One thing for sure, I am looking for a career that provides me an opportunity to grow professionally and intellectually. I understand that both pathways have their pros and cons. ANd I am trying to assimilate all of them right now. My Questions/concerns... 1) Does doing a PhD. imply that I will be circling around research all my life? I might diversify in the field of research or climnb up the research group but I doubt if I will ever be part of a big multinational and be involved in the decision making process. 2) Can a Master's in Biotechnology with no work experience land me a consulting job? Is it possible to eventually start my own consulting company 8-10 years down the line? Or is it a better idea to do a PhD. (which is in the same field as my Master's)? 3) What if I do decide to do a job and then an MBA? Is it easy enough to pursuade companies to finance your education for MBA? Or it takes more than 3 years to convince them to sponser you in most situations? If I do an MBA I want to get it from one of the best B schools in N. America, so it is bound to be expensive. 4) How demanding is job as an MBA professional? WIll I get time for my family? My family is important to me, even though I am not committed yet, I plan to settle down in the next 3-4 years. 5) Could you suggest a realistic time-frame I should expect to do an MBA ihn? Keeping in mind that I don't really have finances for it right now, and hope my employers to help me with that? Or is taking a student loan a better idea? 6) I doubt if working in an inustrial environment after PhD. is laid-back ...probably the industry does set deadlines... what do you think? 7) Being a Chemical Engineer, I might be expected to do field jobs but I am not sure if I can do that kind of work more than two years in a row...I would then need to find a more stable job that provides innovation challenges rather than just shaping up my practical knowledge. 8) I am afraid work will become monotonous as a chemical engineer in the industry. Any feedback on that? Please send in all the feedbacks that you can, Thanks in advance.

  5. Hi Yousuf, u do know a lot about this application vusiness. Pl. i would like to know a little about resumes. I read on a website that a resume has to be CLose to 1 page or so. but i made a resume 3 pages long. it includes a brief overview of my eductiona as a chemical eng. undergraduate. also it includes the entire list of subjects i have been studying in bachelor's chem. eng. the details of marks, and the semester average. i have briefly described work i did in the 2 work terms i did in the industry. next, i have mentioned my acheivements/awards,etc. that is about all. what do u think?
  6. keeping in mind that it is not imperative to report scores for can uni's i gave that advice. also, if u have a great toefl score, u might report ur scores. Good luck. I would like to know if i apply close to Jan 31st, do u think i will be too late for applying for scholarships, etc.
  7. Hi Madalin! about your dilemma, of course! i think for universities i think u shouldn't report your GRE scores. because verbal after all is an important part of GRE. It is not just Vocab but a lot more, u know! I had met a guy a couple of months back who had a not so good GRE score and so he merely reported toefl. and not GRE. HE got thru! he is now studying at U of T. so, what do u think? I hope this helps u decide. Good luck-Penny
  8. hi Madalin! thanks for your advice. it will help me!!!!!!!!!! :)
  9. Hi Madalin, I plan to apply to Can uni's as well. but am confsed about which ones to apply to. Could u help? :)
  10. come on people! there has got to be someone who can help me out!
  11. I think a week is not sufficient time to practice for GRE. taking into mind what ur score has been u wil l need at least a month! the verbal lists might be easy to cram on first look but are hard to retain. GRE is a gruelling test where it matters whether u retain things or not. i advise that u see how much u can do daily, and then register for GRE accordingly. I am a chem eng. student too. So, i know that Q section counts a lot. but the overall score sees u thru generally. Good Luck !!!!
  12. Hi everyone, happy new year to one and all! I hope the year went well for everyone ! best wishes for the future. well, i gave both my Gre and Toefl. Gre score: 770Q, 620 V. toefl : 287, essay=6. Humbly, i do not really know my chances of getting into U of Toronto or Waterloo. about letters of reccomendation-i think a briefing on character and acheivements is required. I've heard that apart from toronto and waterloo, queen's uni offers good courses in chem eng. do u know of any other? how is U of british columbia and U of Alberta? i know little of them. any feedback would be really helpful. with best wishes for the new year----------------- :hmm:
  13. hello! I have just given my GRE and my score is Quant = 770 Verbal = 620 could u pl. tell me which uni's in canada could i apply to? I think one can apply in jan for admissions to fall 2005. I plan to apply for MS in chem eng. I have little idea of uni's for the same.so have any advice?:)
  14. Hi everyone! i just gave my gre- q=770 v=620 i want to apply to canadian uni's in chemical eng. i am not sure about what my chances are! well, i also need to know which uni's are the best option! it will be a great help if anyone could let me know
  15. I think u should have practiced sitting for long sessions. gre is a long and exhausting exam!
  16. It is true that one cannot express personal views in arg. ana. But will stating how the argument could have been strengthened amount to the same? after all, that's personal opinion too! I'm not sure1 I bet if someone can let me know that, pl....:)
  17. Argument:"Five years ago, we residents of Morganton voted to keep the publicly owned piece of land known as Scott Woods in a natural, undeveloped state. Our thinking was that, if no shopping centers or houses were built there, Scott Woods would continue to benefit our community as a natural parkland. But now that our town planning committee wants to purchase the land and build a school there, we should reconsider this issue. If the land becomes a school site, no shopping centers or houses can be built there, and substantial acreage would probably be devoted to athletic fields. There would be no better use of land in our community than this, since a large majority of our children participate in sports, and Scott Woods would continue to benefit our community as natural parkland." MY RESPONSE: The above stated argument may seem plausible at first reading but as a matter of fact it is riddled with fallacies which become evident on closer scrutiny.I propose to point out the invalidity of the arguments forwarded by the author. First and foremost, it is premature to think that the construction of a school on the parkland-site will help bolster athletics. Whether or not the school will help promote athletic fields is largely a matter in the hands of the school administration which decide its policies. Moreover, the school should have requisite funds and infrastructure for promoting sports activities like athletics. There is no mention of anything of the sort. It could be very much possible that the town planning committee is buildings a school on the site because there is a shortage of schools in the region and thus it plans to make education more readily available rather than promote athletics. Thus, it is immature to assume that the construction of the school will lead to promotion of athletics. Also, the author contends that there could not have been a better use of the land. However, apart from building shopping malls and houses which are primarily for personal good, the site of Scott Woods could have been used for more social and charitable acts like building a hospital or a research centre. The utility of such agents to the society cannot be doubted and is no less than the utility offered by schools. Moreover, such institutions serve a larger and wide ranging section of society. If the residents are so adamant that the piece of land be used for the larger social good of society, then these options should also be considered. Additionally, the author mentions that a large majority of their community’s children participate in sports. But the nature of sports that these children indulge in has not been clarified. The kids could be actively participating in indoor sports like chess, Bridge or the like, and might not be equally enthusiastic about outdoor sports. In that case, construction of a school is not really synonymous with bolstering sports. Moreover, the fact that nothing has been stated about how the school plans to promote sports or children’s interest and participation in it , this argument too proves to be futile. I fail to understand how the utility of te site as a parkland will be preserved if a school is going to be built on the same site. We must remember that while a parkland is for public use and everyone can use it, a school is restricted to use of its students, faculty and administrative staff. No one else has the right to entry unless otherwise stated. While anyone can enter and leave a park at free will, it is not the case for a school. It is primarily a place for intellectual instruction and not for just anyone’s use. The argument would have been strengthened if the author had proved in some manner, that the school proposes to pay special attention to sports, in particular- athletics. Also, he needs to justify how a school is the best option for use of the land and none other. Despite this, his argument still welcomes some protest as there is no way a school could preserve the essence of a parkland To conclude, the argument would have been strengthened if the author had validated his statements with concrete statistical data and not merely stated the opinion of the members of the community at large. With this, the analysis of the argument nears end.:)
  18. TOPIC: “Wisdom is rightfully attributed not to people who know what to look for in life but to people who know what to overlook.” RESPONSE: Wisdom is a virtue characterized by the ability to be able to regulate one’s thinking and thoughts. One who conquers the mind conquers the world. However, in light of the above argument, I would like to state that wisdom is attributed not only to people who know what to look for in life but to those who know what to overlook as well. In fact, wisdom is looking for the positive in life and letting go of the negative aspect of it.In the dissertation that follows, I will build upon this ideology with logical reasoning and concrete examples. A wise man is one who knows well how to make the best use of his environment. He is someone who is constantly on the look-out for opportunities for advancement and self-improvement. However, being opportunistic is confused with wisdom, at times. But I would like to clarify that making the best of a situation is not necessarily immoral! In fact, it could be for the social good. Moreover, it is nowhere implied that it is detrimental to serve one’s personal interests. A wise man should be able to respond to opportunities that beckon him and utilize them for the betterment of not only his own self but also of people around him. It has been rightly said: “every cloud has a silver lining”. This implies that in even a saddening issue holds in its wake a joyous news waiting to be discerned. Similarly, a wise person should be able to look at the happy side of things. He should have a disposition which enables him to search for the joyous things in life. However, such a disposition cannot be harbored without having the ability to overlook the depressing things in life. As I stated previously, wisdom lies not only in looking for chances in life but also in turning a blind eye to some issues as well. No doubt, this calls for some amount of self control too. The following example clarifies the claim. At times, we are faced with such perplexing challenges in life that we find ourselves helpless and unable to do something substantive. At such a juncture, there is little that one can do and it is best to leave all to the machinations of time. It is only wise to do so! Furthermore, it is only wise to not emphasize one’s limitations excessively and rather focus on one’s strengths. To explain it better, let us take up an example. A basket ball player might not be so good at shooting baskets. However, he might be a very good defensive player. Rather than brooding over his inability to shoot well, he should be able to focus on his skill as a defensive player and thus hone his skills. That is what got the famed basketball star, Tim Duncan- known for his superior defensive tactics, a slot in the NBA. To add on, I will like to divert our focus on the social ramifications of the disposition to let go of things. Have you ever wondered how a harmless disagreement leads to an argument which then develops into a full fledged competition of the fists? Well, it’s about time that we did a little thinking about that! Almost always, such a situation arises because none of the dissenting parties is willing to let go of the argument. They are so hell bent on proving the other’s claims as incorrect or inadequate. Thus, in absence of anyone who is willing to step down, an innocent discussion turns into a nasty brawl when people across are unwilling to accept your views or opinions it is wise to overlook the whole issue. To conclude, I would simply like to reassert my notion that acting wise is not solely looking for things that make your life complete or only ignoring things; it is a little bit of both. There are opportunities that one needs to look out for,and there are the not so good things of life that one needs to let go of. And that is what goes on to make a wise man
