  1. Just by eyeing your list: it is far more difficult to aim to Berkeley rather than to places like UPenn or Northwestern (not that they are easy to enter, yet easier than Berkeley). Penn has superb metrics and Northwestern has impressive IO. I'd apply there instead than Berkeley, IMHO.
  2. I will add some information on this part of your profile. From what I read, you might have not-so-strong letters -- not from the fact that your letters say something bad about you -- but from the fact that you only mention one of them coming from a well-known professor. This can certainly hurt, given the fact that you mention that your school is top 25. Certainly, quite a few people have mentioned the importance of letters, and this is why I would definitely encourage you to take one of the NBER RA positions, even if they don't exactly match your research interests. Think of it this way: what would you prefer? (a) RA-ing in something that you don't like as much for a year or two and then enter your desired range of schools or (b) Not RA-ing, applying again to lower ranked schools. I know that (a) may not be certain -- however it seems to be your best shot at T5 and it would even maximize your chances at T20.
  3. I am also an international student who applied in this cycle. I got very nice results with a very similar GRE. I'd advice against repeating it; work on other parts of your application, time is gold.
  4. It completely depends on the money you are willing to spend. My suggestion would be that you first apply to a wider range of programs, where you can include programs like Duke's or MEDS or b-schools, along with more common programs to where you think your profile is worth giving it a shot. And later, only after you are accepted, take the decision on where to go. Although you sound pretty convinced on what you want to do, it could be the case (I don't know you, nor your profile's strength) that you are rejected in all specialized programs, which would leave you without any options in the first place.
  5. I am sure it is not 4/2, it is 4/1. 4/2 is Columbia and they are known to coordinate.
  6. I don't see as definitely bad to contact the other student.
  7. I would not sign a form admitting something I did not do unless I notified first the universities that accepted me and ask them to consider their opinion on the matter. If they say they don't care, then I'd maybe go for it and retake the exam without much hassle as this seems to be the easier way out. I don't know your university's policies but I'd say the burden of the proof should be on them, and not on you: you should not be the one trying to prove you were innocent, it should be them trying to prove you are not. If I were you, I would refer the matter to the SA Office. Have you talked to the other guy involved? What is his/her opinion? Finally, it is a signaling game. If you are sure you are innocent, then you shouldn't even show a little bit of doubt on whether you did wrong or not.
  8. Speaking of Harvard, did any of you guys received an email from Raj Chetty today inviting to a RA program? (I was rejected from Harvard).
  9. I might get downvoted for this opinion, but I wanted to share it here. I don't know how some guys handle so well rejecting an offer and talk about an 'ego boost'. I just feel sad when I have to write an email saying "thank you, but no thank you". It just feels like someone trusted me enough to get into their program and I am deciding not to take their offer. How can I be so sure that university X is better than university Y just because of their rankings? What if you could stand out in university Y and not in X and therefore end up being placed in a much higher-paid job in the future?
  10. If you are considering placement records and you are very confident that the topics you like will not change over time, then a much more reliable piece of information would be placement (ranking) within your field and not placement (ranking) overall. For example, I think Macro's placement and ranking at Princeton is superior to Stanford's and Northwestern's.
  11. It may be real, but I'm just being skeptic. It just seems off that one guy received one offer and no one else did. This is not common behavior...
  12. No, some of the visit day info was released by current students (who already know when the visit day will be).
  13. I know this might be too much to ask but has anyone got a clue on when will the visit day from Berkeley will be? I am planning ahead buying plane tickets on other flyouts but (not saying I will be, it is a long shot) if I am accepted to Berkeley I would want to attend.
  14. There was no email to accepted applicants (or at least none that I have received). I just randomly checked the website and there it was.
