  1. Can anyone confirm what stipend offers they got from UChicago Econ? From discussions I've had it seems they've made differential offers to various admitted candidates.
  2. Thanks so much for your advice. I have gone through game theory lecture notes for PhD courses in Econ so yeah, I've got some idea about game theory beyond MBA level also. But papers - as you correctly pointed out - are a whole different story. They're very dense and I have to keep going back to LNs and other stuff to even start understanding the first few pages. Any particular papers you would suggest to start with?
  3. Thanks so much. That's informative and that really helps.
  4. Thanks for the info. Yeah it's true my interest lies in Econ mainly but that looked impossible given the circumstances. Thanks again.
  5. Thanks so much for your very helpful reply. I have done some econometric modeling as part of my job. So yeah, that bit can be linked to the PhD application. But the point is, I'm actually interested in the Econ side of game theory applications. Now the fact remains that business PhD programs focused on manegerial economics (such as MEDS in Kellogg) are looking difficult to crack with my profile (no eco/math background etc.). Hence the refocusing on the DS area. Any thoughts? Any info would help as I'm looking for general guidance on various DS programs, profs etc.
  6. I'm looking for a business PhD, since I've already done my MBA. I don't have Eco/math background as you can see, so a pure Econ PhD looks practically impossible. And I was hoping my MBA+work ex could be made to work for a business PhD application (which is impossible for an Econ PhD application). Any thoughts? Thanks so much for your reply.
  7. Hi all, First of all, thank you for taking out time to read and reply to my post. Can you please suggest well-regarded professors working in the game theory area in various bschools? I'm going to apply for a PhD in a bschool. But the glitch is my interest lies in game theory research, preferably on the theory side. Given my profile I realize that I might have to go down the rankings quite a bit (I'm looking to apply in the 20-40 range), in which case landing a highly-ranked guide in a not-so-highly-ranked school looks like my best strategy. Which is why I'm looking for names of individual professors. To give you a background - I earned my MBA in 2011 from India's top ranked business school (IIM Ahemedabad, ranked 26th in the world by FT in 2015) and have been working in the corporate sector since then. However I want to shift to a career in academia as I want an intellectually engaging career. Hence I want to do my PhD. I have two major concerns about my profile: 1. I have done an engineering undergrad (GPA 9.08/10) and not an economics/math UG, which makes it difficult to convince the adcom about my ability to do game theory. 2. My GPA at MBA level is 2.99/4 which is kinda average (even though the school is incredibly competitive, with admission rates in the range of 0.1%). Thanks a ton for your help. Apologies for the all bolds formatting. I'm not able to change it for some reason.
  8. Context: I'm from India. Test Scores (GRE): Not taken yet. Undegrad GPA: Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (200) from non-IIT, but top school in my state. GPA: 9.08/10 (First class honours) Graduate GPA: MBA (2011) from IIM Ahmedabad (India's top-ranked business school; FT MBA school rank 26 in the world for 2015) · M.Sc.(2011) in International Management, Bocconi University, Italy (Double Degree). · Bocconi GPA: 98/110 (Italian system) · IIMA GPA: 2.99/4 (While I was probably only in the top 70-100 in my ~300 strong batch, the MBA program of IIMA is one of most competitive in the world to get into, with admission rates around 0.1%. Each year this program is attended by ~300 of the best students in entire India, across disciplines. And this place uses relative grading. That means no one in the history of IIMA ever earned US-like GPA's such as 3.8+/4 etc. The max. GPA's would range around 3.4...3.5) Research Experience: None in course of my MBA education. However I have very good research experience at undergrad level compared to most Indian undergrads.I have co-authored 4 papers (on optimization of sensor networks), under the guidance of one of my undergrad profs, one of which is in IEEEXplore Teaching Experience: none Work Experience: Working for the past 1 year 9 months for one of the Big 4 professional services firms in their financial risk management practice. Worked for an FMCG company in their compliance department for 2.5 years before that. Significant recent projects (client engagements and solution development): 1. End-to-end conceptualization and development of portfolio allocation solution based on Black-Litterman model. 2. Developed solution for selecting optimal derivative instruments for Steel hedging based on Garbade and Silber simultaneous price dynamics model 3. Contributed to the Financial Instruments section of Global Steel 2014 - the firm's marquee annual steel publication. Received written appreciation from the Risk Advisory National Leader for the same. 4.Conceptualization and development of Value-at-Risk model for a telecom major: • Single-handedly created a 4 step, 9 substep model for computing VaR for the client • Chose sample risk factors and simulated sample VaR scenarios for the same 5. Conceptualization and development of Vector Auto Regression based commodity price forecasting solution for one of India's top FMCG players 6. Led a team of six to conduct end-to-end treasury controls review of a leading Indian bank. Ensured achievement of steep individual and team daily targets against tight timelines. Received written appreciation from project supervisor. 7. Led end to end foreign exchange and commodities review including risk management policy benchmarking for a leading Indian Engineering, Procurement and Construction company. 8. Led working capital & trade finance review in one of India’s major oil refining companies. 9. Team member in trade finance review in one of the world-leading luxury car manufacturers based in the UK. Concentration Applying to: Economics/strategy/decision sciences (My preferred area would be Eco, as my interest lies in game theory). Number of programs planned to apply to: 6-10 Dream Schools: Kellogg MEDS What made you want to pursue a PhD: Earned an MBA in 2011 and have been working in the corporate sector since then. However I want to shift to a career in academia as I want an intellectually engaging career. Hence I want to do my PhD. Concerns you have about your profile: Two-fold: 1. I have an engineering background and not an economics/math background, which makes it difficult to convince the adcom about my ability to do game theory. 2. My average GPA at MBA level. Any additional specific questions you may have: #1 Please suggest schools I should apply to realistically, given my profile. (I may not even apply this year, may apply next year if I feel my preparation is not sufficient). #2 Please suggest well-regarded professors working in the game theory area in various bschools. I realize I might have to go down the rankings quite a bit while applying, in which case landing a highly-ranked guide in a not-so-highly-ranked school looks like my best strategy. Thanks a ton for your help. Apologies for the rondom formatting. I'm not able to change it for some reason.
  9. And btw, @all: I've made a lot of posts today, most of which are not nice ;), all of which have been dutifully downvoted by the diligent teams here. But the highest downvoted post - the only one that got collapsed because of the heavy downvoting - is the one where I conveyed my appreciation to someone else, without any attacks or criticisms. That says a lot about the "community" here as well. :P Now that I have let that slip, don't waste time teams! What are you waiting for?? I just told you that tere are still posts of mine lurking on this thread that haven't been collapsed! Go downvote en masse! :encouragement:
  10. Thank you for your very valuable and informative advice, ZYX. :) Upvoted.
  11. I was conveying my appreciation to another poster (Econ2011). I wasn't attacking anyone, or even addressing anyone other than Econ2011. You were definitely nowhere in the picture. Then you come back with fresh energy and start your expected cascade of "laughable" and "childish" and "ploys" and "demonize" and "go away". And I'm supposed to think this is "useful info", devoid of "personal attacks", posted for "public information". Why? Also, if "I'm at the centre" of this "monumentally unusual outburst", then how come we're still talking? Have I been talking to myself for the last 3 pages full of posts? Or is it like - the posts from you guys were all extremely necessary and not an "outburst" at all because you couldn't neglect the call of duty to "contribute" to the forum and "teach" me the ways of this forum?
  12. Why would I downvote your post? Yours is the most sensible post I've read ever since my original post (the one I made yesterday, not the original one on the thread). :) Every single person that has commented after my yesterday's post has sermonized about the inappropriateness of personal attacks. But the funny part is, not one of them has refrained from using it themselves. Neither has any of them shown anything but stubborn refusal to see the elephant in the room that were the elements of direct personal attack (in his case, completely unprovoked) contained in Chateuheart's original post. While even you don't seem prepared to admit the malicious and attacking tone (most importantly - completely unprovoked) in the first post of Chatueuheart, at least you admit that suggestions from people are to taken with a grain of salt. That's much more honesty than what I expect from the crowd here anyway! Thanks! :)
  13. Not a huge loss, as I was getting exactly the same kind of meaningless replies by posting perfectly normal queries. In fact that's what I discussed at length with Chateuheart, and by the end he understood that he hadn't, in fact, provided any meaninful info at all, which is why he went on to provide them in his later posts. So..Thanks for the advice, and I agree with you. :) Also thanks for busting the myth (something other people have been claiming on this thread) that people here post for helping others. I agree with you, that it's all an ego game at the end of the day. If you "antagonize" others you won't get any info, but that means "others" won't get any info either, because as Chateuheart mentioned in one of his posts - he was, in fact, not replying to help me, but to help "people in general". I'm glad you busted that myth. :)
  14. And yet you believe you can predict admissions decisions with "absolute" (a word used 3 times in 1 reply :D ) perfection. Sigh.
  15. And you know what people do when they "don't know" the answer to the very specific question that has been aske? They stay silent. I understand that's an option that may not have occurred to you. :)
