  1. I am currently trying to decide between Cambridge’s MPhil in Economic Research, UCL’s MSc in Economics and the MSc in Economics at Barcelona GSE. Mainly for personal reasons, the latter is most likely out of the race but I still want to include it here, should there be any compelling arguments for choosing it over the other two. My main goal is to move on to a Top 10 Phd programme after my master’s (or rather after the MRes, since I plan to apply during this “second year”). Shouldn’t my grades/references be good enough for that I hope to be able to stay for my Phd. If everything goes wrong, the third option would probably be a job in the private sector. My research interests are microeconometrics, labour economics and industrial organization, for all of which UCL would be absolutely perfect. However, those still might change and I hope to receive a general and rigorous training during my master’s, so it probably does not matter as much. From what I’ve gathered in terms of Phd placement into the US: BGSE>UCL>Cambridge Placement after a Phd: UCL > UPF >= Cambridge Reputation: Cambridge>>UCL>>BGSE/UPF Overall rigor of the program: Cambridge ?= BGSE (choosing the advanced courses) > UCL Cambridge seems to have the toughest entry requirements and the lowest admission rate of these programs. This makes me assume that they also attract a better cohort, while UCL and BGSE seem to have relatively lower standards. Also, while I don’t want to focus too much on it during my decision-making process, it would somehow feel wrong to turn down Cambridge… However, I am seriously wondering about the overall quality of the program since their MPhil is only one year long instead of the usual two years and given that their faculty is not up to the standard of the other two departments. Can anyone comment on their placement into other Phd programs after the MPhil? Has anyone been in a similar situation and would like to comment on their decision?
