  1. Question: As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Answer: “Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they are basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them.” So said Steve Jobs, one of the most prominent pioneers of technology of the 21st century. Technology gives us, the humans, tools with which we have invented things that would otherwise have been impossible. It’s us, the humans, who have to use our brains in order to write a computer program that calculates the amount of risk that a bacteria poses in certain geographical conditions. The bacteria then evolves rapidly and we have to change our program to adjust to the new inputs. Or the bacteria may move to other geographical locations in which case we have to modify the variables of the program. In any scenario, we need human intervention to correctly assess the risk factor. Technology has simplified the access to many such necessary tools people need in education, industry, medicine, communication, transportation, and so on. Technology has made a great impact on education. Learning as well as teaching has become easier with the widespread use of technology. The students have myriad options available from where they can learn. The internet has provided them a vast number of resources from where they can satiate their hunger for knowledge. Be it khanacademy, coursera, edX, udacity, or any of the courses under MOOC – all of these websites have become vital tools for the students. Technology has also helped teachers by providing them platforms like Giant Purble Ppl Eater where they can teach students online. Various websites like facebook have become extremely popular with students and teachers alike. Teachers, students and their peers can share their knowledge using such websites. Also, smartphones have become hugely popular for educational purposes with the advent of apps like WhatsApp. Other apps for quizzes like QuizUp have become popular with quizzing aficionados. Wherever we look, technology has become the pillar on which education stands right now. Moving from education to a certain Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, if it weren’t for him we would still have to rely on the homing pigeons to deliver our messages. If it weren’t for the Wright Brothers, we would still be using ships and other slower means of transportation. Communication among ourselves and communication between places have changed ever since there has been use of technology. Telephones, be it the land line phones or the cell phones, has made communication a lot easier. Now people can keep in touch with others from all around the world with just the dial of a button, from anywhere around the house or from the plush seat in an aeroplane. Softwares like Skype has allowed us to communicate with our near and dear ones from atop the Burj Al Khalifa or from the icy lands of Russia. We can now travel from Moscow to Houston in just under 12 hours which are nearly 6000 miles apart. There are maglev trains which can travel at a speed of around 400 miles/hour. These transportation wizardries have been possible only due to technology. But “Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” We may have scaled new peaks using technology but it can have detrimental effects on us as well. Cyber-bullying, online predators and the likes have slowly started spreading their venom. Identity theft has become popular with unsuspecting people making online transactions becoming the prey. Televisions, computers and videogames have made people lazy. In spite of these hindrances, technology was, is and will be the mainstay of the human race. With technologies like 3D printing, we can create three dimensional solid objects like 3D printed medical models of the human anatomy digitally. The printing of these models is so accurate that surgeons can plan a surgery on a printed model before the real patient goes under the knife. To put it in a nutshell, technology is omnipresent and the more we use technology, the more progressive we will become. Please evaluate and rate the essay out of 6.
