  1. Well, I'm failing to understand why the hell would someone get a kick out of posting wrong info on GC... Anyway, that's the one I'm sure I won't get in. There's always that group you apply to "just because".
  2. Nice choice of rankings! Btw, isn't ARWU the same as Shanghai? It would be useful to get something like a ranking averaging out all these. A one to rule them all sort of thing
  3. Ok. I have to say that it is not at all the impression I get, though I will plead ignorance. Apologizing for any discourtesy, I must acknowledge it's the first time I read the names of Bath, Bristol and so on when talking about Econ PhD or Depts. LSE, UCL, Oxford, Warwick is one thing. But I always thought the others were clearly below this group of 5 universities. But then again, I'm sticking with pleading ignorance and giving your claim the benefit of the doubt
  4. That's a bit mean, it is top 5 in the UK. Anyway, if you are looking to these rankings to assess quality, you shouldn't. QS, US News, etc, they all assess proxies: reputation, publications, placement/income x years after graduation. And there are huge selection effects, as reputation calls for certain kind of people, which already had better shots to be earning more. That's maybe why Cambridge is top 10. When you have HRH as your classmate, the networking opportunities are a bit stronger. (At least it's how I explain it to myself) The thing is that if you say top 30 in the US, you're probably might even be talking of top 100 in the world! What enlarges your options a bit to make it to good PhDs
  5. Well, a suggestion of another ranking with two advantages: more or less consistent with US News and with world-wide coverage: QS World University / Economics & Econometrics - here Given that there is an increasing international graduate mobility in Europe and elsewhere, this can be of use when comparing Universities for Econ PhDs. And a third advantage: it is a bit (even if just a bit) clearer on its sources. Though I suggest to sometimes cross-check with other rankings to get different perspectives - e.g. IDEAS's top 25% Econ Depts here.
  6. That is not true. It would be something like vandalism! Just try to search for it better. Anyway, from what I managed to see, the calls appear in two consecutive days and there was one person who even got an e-mail (lived in Asia). Thus we will probably see more posts today.
  7. Without wanting to sound pessimistic, they had several weeks to go over that. I wished indeed that rejections would come before acceptances. The waiting is dreadful, especially when you already have priors on the outcome...
  8. There are two of them [Princeton rejections], not one.
  9. I know exactly what you mean... It's getting on my nerves. And to have only second-hand information (GC) and no reply just makes everything worse.
  10. Ok, I was seeing the acceptances and the rejections on GC for some of the unis I've applied to, but I haven't received any email. My applications were all correctly submitted and etc. What should I make of this? Is it a sign that I'm getting rejected and the results come later? Is it possible that I might not even get a response, either positive or negative? Congrats to all that made it already! :eager:
  11. I know that by looking at what I posted I would seem pretty macro and empirical, but that is just because there are no RA positions where I come from. I actually like to do research on micro theory and, at most, theory-based micro empirical research. What's more, one of the reasons for wanting to take a econ phd is exactly because I want to learn more advanced pure theory, so public policy is not at all my kind of thing In any case, thanks a lot for the suggestions
  12. Do you think so? I'm asking because upon looking to my curriculum (as almost to any European one) US universities might think that I won't be able to cope with the math and this would be a way to produce some sort of certification. Well, I know, but at least to submit projects I'm finishing (and publish them as WP meanwhile) would be a head start I am applying lower, but only two or three more in the US. By the way, what would you recommend? It's not straightforward for me T20-30 as I don't know how you rank (I use QS and IDEAS/RePEc, so I'm not used to thinking about US only) Thank you for the advice!
  13. It's not that common to have RA positions where I come from. In fact, it's not common at all. If I don't get accepted (with funding) in any of the several universities I'm applying to (I doubt that I'm not getting in any top European one, but it is possible), I'm thinking to enrolling in a graduate Math course and to publish some ongoing research, as it seems it all boils down to signalling. I really wanted to be in the best program possible to take me to my limits and learn as much as I can, but if I get rejections from the best ones I prefer to enroll where I can than to wait a year and go through this whole process again. Thank you for your feedback samtheham!
  14. MR14 I'm doing as you suggested. Thank you for your feedback! It was very important for me at the time to have a stranger assessing whether I should retake the GRE Btw: I already was applying to some of the programs you suggested :)
