  1. Hello all, I've recently been accepted to GSU for their M.A. Econ program. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the program? How well does it place, what are the research opportunities like? I understand that the program is aimed at individuals aiming for a career outside academia but I wonder if students in the M.A. program ever go on to pursue PhDs in GSU or elsewhere. I've emailed the department with these questions but they're a little slow in responding. Will appreciate any information. Thanks in advance!
  2. Hello all, I've recently been admitted to tuft's msc econ program. I'm extremely excited about the research some of the professors are doing and would love to assist as an RA (getting paid would also bring down total costs). Would it be a good time to start emailing some of these professors letting them know that I'm coming and I'd be interested to work with them? If yes, what all should I include in this email? Is it too forward of me to email my resume and transcripts in the first email I send to them. Thanks in advance.
  3. Getting letters of recommendation can be really nerve racking. Atleast it was for me. I think it's best to just go to their office during office hours and ask. If they say yes, then you can worry about sending them the things they need. Just go in and inform your instructors about your plans. I was pleasantly surprised by the willingness of instructors to not only fill out recommendations but also offer alot of other useful advice about where to apply etc.
  4. Hmmm, I wonder how many econ courses you've taken so far. If it's just 2 or 3, maybe you shouldn't take it as an indication that you aren't great in econ. Maybe it was just those particular courses. Try to figure out what you did wrong. Good luck!
  5. Hmm, I've heard that you shouldn't have gaps in your CV. Perhaps just mention that you worked there and the duration, don't give like a full job description.
  6. I couldn't really find many MA programs which would be considered good preperation for a phd. There were some MAs in applied econ but I got the impression that they were mostly for people looking for job placements. Is there a specific program you'd suggest?
  7. My degree in from Pakistan. Students from my university generally place very well in graduate programs. I've heard of top students getting into schools like Yale, Harvard etc.
  8. Thanks for responding moneyandcredit. It's difficult to give a range. The higher the better I guess but I suppose I'd be happy with anything in the top50, top 30 would be ideal. Kansas sounds like a nice option. Do you know what the funding for masters students is like? Would I have a shot at getting funding there? Also, what are the placements for the masters program like? Do graduates end up in higher ranked programs? Thanks again!
  9. Hello, I'm applying to graduate school in the fall of 2016. Initially, I was looking at Phd programs in the US but I realized that I wouldn't have too great of a chance because of my limited research experience so now I'm looking masters programs in the US and Canada. I've heard great things about the masters programs at Tufts. Duke and Queens (Canada) and their Phd placements. If I get into one of these programs, I think that would be a good stepping stone towards a Phd. Bearing in mind that I want to eventually obtain a Phd, I was wondering if I should look at other masters programs such as UC denvor or Greensboro? I understand that funding opportunities for masters students are limited and I don't know if it's worth the cost to pursue a master which won't significantly impact my chances of Phd admission but I also realize that admissions to masters programs like Duke, tufts etc are pretty competitive and maybe I should look at other masters programs. Here's my profile: Type of Undergrad: BSc in Economics in the highest ranked school in my country Undergrad GPA: 3.62 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 159V 163Q 4.5AW Math Courses: Cal 1, Cal 2, Linear Algebra, Game Theory, Operations Research, Statistics and Data Analysis, Mathematical Applications of Economics Econ Courses (grad-level): N/A Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Principles of Macro & Micro, Intermediate Micro & Macro, International Trade, Econometrics, Developmental Economics Theory, Issues in Economic Policy, Applied Micro, Regional Economics, Monetary Theory and Policy Other Courses: N/A Letters of Recommendation: strong letters from Econometrics professor and Intermediate Micro professor. Both these professors are working with me on my senior project and are very qualified (phd from Yale and Phd from Ohio state). 3rd letter of recommendation is from Sociology instructor who I've taken multiple courses from and she knows me well (I have a minor in Sociology) Research Experience: Senior Project Teaching Experience: N/A Research Interests: Applied micro, Econometrics, Developmental Economics SOP: My question is: Should I apply to lower ranked masters programs (such as greensboro and UC denvor)? What are my chances of receiving funding? Or would I just be better of getting involved in some economic research and applying in a year or so? If anyone can suggest other masters programs with funding opportunities, that might be helpful. Thanks in advance!
