  1. Digging this up for one further question: If nothing changes, I'm gonna accept the Iowa offer and try to do some research with the professors there. It would be nice if I can stay there for the PhD, but I also want some other target schools in mind, so I can be better prepared when applying in winter 2018. With my profile above: 740 GMAT 50Q 40V, 3.5 UG, (hopefully) above 3.7 in the MBA, modest research exp (100 pg senior thesis and (again, hopefully) some research exp during the MBA, which schools should I target? I'm thinking T50, but is that too low or too high?
  2. How can your school change how its grade is converted to U.S. system? I think most U.S. schools will do their own approximation based on the education system of your country, or using conversion services like WES. My school has a dual grading system of 4 and 10, and while my 4-point GPA is only 3.3, WES converted my results to 3.6 US GPA.
  3. Thank you XanthusAres! That's a very useful and informative answer. I haven't accepted the offer yet, since I only have to make a decision before Jan 30. To be honest, I applied to MBA programs this year, partially because specialized master programs in the US rarely offer the same funding chance as an MBA, for all I know. I will surely contact faculties at Univ Iowa for research opportunities, but I don't hope to be able to work with them immediately, since I'm not in the US right now. Well, unless any of them is having a research specifically targeted at my home country, that is. :D
  4. Is it possible to go from MBA to PhD, with no quant-heavy background though? I don't know if I can take courses at Math/Stat/Econ Departments as electives...
  5. Hi all, I graduated in Spring 2015 from a relatively unknown university in South East Asia (top of my country though), with a bachelor in Business Economics. My GPA is around 3.5-3.6 on US scale and my GMAT is 740 (50Q 40V), but my curriculum, sadly, didn't have many math courses. I've always wanted to do a PhD in Management in the States (preferably on I/O or Managerial Econ side). Last year I got a full-ride, with stipend to Maastricht University in the Netherlands for a M.Sc. in Managerial Economics (1 year 2016-2017), but I turned that down in the last minute, since I wanted to try out the "real life" first, to be 100% sure I'm set on a career in the academia. Now that I have made up my mind, I've been applying to various programs in the US, and recently received a full-ride to Univ Iowa for their MBA program. However, I begin to doubt my decision. From what I've read on Urch, a master in Economics will be much more beneficial in applying to a PhD program, especially with a not-so-good math background like mine. Do you think I've made the wrong choice? Which is better, accepting the MBA scholarship and try to gain research experience, or apply to other master programs (Economics/Statistics) in Europe (US programs tend to offer no funding, and I can't afford their tuition)?
  6. Hi, I don't know whether this thread is still active, since the 2016 application window was over in January, but I am seeking some advice to apply for Fall 2018 (a little too early, I know). Test Scores (GMAT): 730 (96%) - Q: 50 (88%) V: 40 (91%) AWA: 5.0 (Planning to retake if I have time, since I often get 760-780 in the mock tests.) TOEFL: 110/120 Undegrad GPA: 8.12/10 (around top 10%, my school doesn't publish ranking). majored in Business Economics at the best business school in my country, but still an unknown school somewhere in South East Asia to others. Grad GPA: N/A - Applied to some master programs and haven't decided, but probably Master in Managerial Economics at Maastricht University, Netherlands. Research Experience: Senior thesis; an awarded paper in my school's Student Scientific Research Contest. Teaching Experience: N/A Work Experience: Currently in the first year of a Management Associate Program of a top financial service firm in my country. Concentration Applying to: Strategy/Organizational Behavior Number of programs planned to apply to: around 10-15 Dream Schools: USC, UMich, INSEAD, NYC (aiming way too high?) Awards: Uni Maastricht High Potential Scholarship: full tuition and living stipend; American Chamber of Commerce Scholarship; School research award (Do these awards matter though, may I ask?) Concerns you have about your profile: unknown school, kinda low GPA, not much research experience, few quant courses. Further questions: I have been offered a full scholarship and stipend to study at Maastricht, but I planned to apply to some other programs, including Master of Statistics at KU Leuven, Belgium. However, due to work-related reason, I couldn't apply in time. Do you think I'd be better doing a Master of Statistcs rather than Managerial Economics to prepare for the PhD application? t
