  1. hi members, I received reply from ETS in which it was said that my GRE score reports have been mailed on May 5, 2005. Plz tell me after how many days I shall receive my scores. I am from Pakistan. regards, Ali
  2. Hi members, plz score these essays and comment for improvements. regards, Ali "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served." min 45 Old buildings are precious and valuable part of a nation culture and heritage and are reminders of its glorified past.It is the prime duty of the goverment to look after the old buildings properly and regularly. Special funds should be allocated for the Old Heritage department. Funds for the maintenance can also be raised by exploiting the market value of its own. So where these historical buildings have capacity to be used for modern use, then it is better to use them then preserve them. Preservence of the old buildings will only attract tourists, who are eager to know about its importance and its outlook. Other visitors may be interested in its landscape or for the picnic use, but this narrow scope can be exponentially enhanced by adopting a modern paradigm to its use. A very relevant example is the opening a science museum at the Lahore Fort. In the science museum, there are the a huge collection of science artifacts, discoveries models, atrifical biological gardens and stimulations of famous scientific experiments. By using the Historical fort in this way, not only tourists come here, but the students who are interested in science also have a lot of things to know about this place. This approach has multiplied their funds and now the local administration have more freedom in using it for the betterment of the fort. We see many incidents, often very common in the development countries where old historical buildings have erased out just because of the inability of the governement to look afterthem. In this case if these buildings were utilized by governments or were changed into education institutions then perhaps benifits were be of two-folded. On the one side, these buildings could be renovated properly and the functioning departments in these buildings would not need more funds for the construction purposes. When Pakistan was established, in the early years , government machinery lacked proper establishments and offices, at that time all the old buildings are used as surogate for the offices. Even now many schools, colleges and universities are still running in the centuries old buildings, which have become a source of popularity and esteem for these institutions. A the same time, we must be prudent enough in defining the scope of the modern use. The buildings are the great memories of great nations. The use must not compromise its dignity, its beauty and its histroy. Rather the use should add value to its importance. If these buildings are used as storehouse or be saled out for a car stand then it is clearly a clap on its worth and the histroy of the nation. To sum up the matter, old buildings can be everlasting and everflourishing assests of a country if they are rightly used rather than preserve it. So there is no harm in the proper utilization of these buildings if this utilization is in benifit for its own sake and for the country and nation also. The following is a memo from the superintendent of the Mylar school district. "A recent six-month study, in which breakfast was made available at school for 100 schoolchildren ages five to twelve, found that children on the breakfast plan were less likely than other children to be absent from or late for school. Clearly, eating breakfast before school plays a role in reducing student absenteeism and tardiness. It is also well known that children who regularly eat a healthful breakfast tend to perform better in school. Therefore, in order to reduce absenteeism and tardiness and to improve academic performance in all of Mylar's elementary and secondary schools, we should provide breakfasts for all students before each school day." 30 min The argument is based on a six-month study work on school childern at Mylar School district. The study reveals that if childern were provided breakfast at school, they become more regular at school and their performance also increases. As far as the claim that breakfast at school, makes childern less absent or late at school is not logically convincing. Absent or latecomers have a lot of different problems. If a child is ill or suffering from some disease then he will not come to school whether breakfast is provided or not. This step will also increase the financial burden on the child parents. If the parents of some childern are poor they will openly protest against this step. Furthermore, different childern like different things in the breakfast, some like butter and slice, some like juice and fruits, how schools can manage all these things according to the choice of students. The school will also have to devise a policy for serving breakfast. For instance, if a student who have not taken breakfast and he comes late, will the school serve him or not.If he is allowed to be seved then how much time margin will be allowed in this respect. Now another claim that was made is that, breakfast at school will improve the performance of the childern. No sane person can accept this claim both scientifically and emperically for a number of fallacies. First of all, whether student take breakfast at school or at home, he start his school activities after taking breakfast. So both the cases are at equal level. Secondly, performance of the student is not explained in detail. If it is the performance in study then it will enhanced by good and kind teachers, by developing student interests, by encouraging him. If it is the performance about extra curricular activities then it can be improved by more practice, exercise and a balance diet. Infact breakast at school be make student drowsy and dull, their attention in the class will decreased. To sum up the matter, the applicability of the finding that breakfast at school will increase attendence rate and performace of the students is by no means a sound judgement and the claims are very week to support the conclusion.
  3. The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda. "For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system." 30 min ------------------------------ The argument draw conclusion that Mr. Schade should be hired to direct the general music programs for the entrie Saluda school system. The evidence in support of the conclusion are based on the previous spectecular professional achievements of Mr. Schade in the field of music. One of the premise is that during his five years service at Steel City high school, the school won three regional band competition. No doubt, he was the director and may reorganized the previous structure of the music infrastructure of the school but he is not the only person to be deserved for this credit. Hard working of the students who won this competition, their natural talent, the proessional working of his subordinate staff also have their due share for the award. All these things are unaccountable in the argument. If he is a good director then definately he has made some good reforms in the music department of the Steel City High School. Before taking any decision one must consider the true spirit of his professional intelligence, but any of these things have not even hinted in the argument. When you talk about that during his tenure the quality of the musical rehersal facilities and musical instruments have improved, I think it is again not a deterministic factor for hiring him. It may be possible that school has allocated more funds to the music department, or the new students have shown more interests in music rehersal as compare to the previous, they may adopted a new syllabus or a new standard methodology. A music director of a school and a music director of the entire school system must be hired by chalking out the difference in the job duties. A school music director has more freedom, has to perform more technical job, face less or no resistence and have less contact with the pubic level, but a music director for the entire school system has altogeather different jobs to perform. He must be a good communicator, also know the professional politics, have to face public resistence and many more factors. So he may or may not be as successful as he was at the school level. So the above provided evidences are not so convincing that conclusion of hiring should be drawn on them.
  4. People in positions of power are most effective when they exercise caution and restraint in the use of that power." 45 min ------------------------------ Lust for power and wealth are deep rooted in the psychology of Human Nature. Man from the cave age has preffered to live in groups in which the ruler used to enjoy supreme power. It is also crystal clear that successful rulers in the history are only those who gave respect to the majority of the opinion, those who tried to impose their thought were greeted with severe opposition and ultimately were lost their power and respect. In the present world, the democracy is prevailing all over the world slow and steadily. Infact, the secret of the success of democracy lies in the use of power with restraint and caution. There are few loop holes for the misuse of power. Rulers were considered as representatives of the government, who are selected by election on the basis of their relation, repute and effectiveness or the people of their electorate. When american forces invaded Iraq after the war, there were greeted rather than obstructed by the Iraqi people. What factors causes them to rebel their 30 years ruling under saddam Hussain? It was the curroption, nepotism, eliticism and large misuse of power of the ruling party. Who people can feel saftey and satisfaction when a single protestion of comunity can result in the mass murder of 3,00,000 innocent people. Today, United States is sole superpower of the world. How it happens to be in that place. The credit goes to the sincere and devoted leadership of the country. Today, president of America is the most powerful person on the earth but at the same time, any ordinary person can have access to him and can chellenge his any unlawful act. Where, his one signature where can make or mare the geography of any country, on the other side, any common person can file a case against him, whatever its importance is. Where it is safe to say that use of power under constraints and caution is the most effective way, we must also admit that " whenever there is power, there is also misuse of power". Even in the Country like United States, quite often, incidents of curroption, bribary happen. But the thing is that, the victom can expect justice and impartiality of judges. To sum up the matter, balance of power , either it is in a family, in a city, in a country or in the world is the right choice that can make hell a heaven and heaven a hell.
  5. hi members, plz rate my argument on scale of 1-6, tell my week areas and any other suggestions. regards, Ali The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell. "Two years ago, the town of Ocean View built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. During the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. The best way to improve Hopewell's economy, and generate additional tax revenues, is to build a golf course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View." The argument draws conclusion that economy of the town of Ocean View can be improved by building new hotels and golf courses. This conclusion is based on the slight premises that in the past these types of construction helped in giving a boost to economy. Two important observations the argument provides us are increase Toursim and openning of new businesses. Let us analyze them one by one. Toursim do depend on the sole factor of increase in enteraining places. Many other factors also count, like improved line and order situation, a proper marketing plan, more incentives from the government and more new openings like triming forests for the purpose of natural beauty and any other countless factors. Secondly, business have not been described in detail. Like what type of businesses are flourishing in Ocean View. It may be the businesses that have nothing to do with the gulf course, or hotel resorts, or may be a country wise boom be the cause of a surge in business activities. It is also said that 30 percent increase in the Tax revenues also indicates a progress in Ocean View economy. Of course, Tax revenues is a major factor of measuring Macro Economic Indicators and is also proportional to progress. But it is not clear either this increase is due to the new hotels and golf courses. Even if we take it true that hotels and golf courses have good impact on the town econmy. We can not say that the same farmula will also repeats the same results. One factor is the vision and goals and targeted audiences that were considered while building that hotels. Either they were small hotels or five star hotels, either this market is now saturated or there is still a room for this policy, either a new trend has replaced or revamped this thought.Who were the investor, either it is public-public, public-private or private-private partnership. The conclusion also reveals a narrow insight of the policy makers. Change is the only constant thing in the world and their is also a room for the improvement. It appears that policy makers have not indepth analysis while taking that decision.Their may be many more profit-making business which were not considered. writing time 30 min
  6. Hi members, plz rate my issue on scale of 1-6.If possible let me know my week areas and suggest me how to cope with them. regards, Ali "Contemporary technology makes available many small pieces of factual information. As a result, people have become so preoccupied with bits of fragmented information that they pay too little attention to the larger issues and overall perspectives." Contemporary world is technology-driven. More and more spohisticated technologies are emerging. This cutting-edge and latest knowledge where on the one side, unprecedently facilitating the people, on the other hand enticing them in its complexities so much that sometimes people become directionless and took their substantive use wrongly. Latest Internet and Communication Technologies clearly substantiate the above mentioned claim. Oracle, Seimens, People Soft and counless other companies constantly offering new and new technologies such a speedy manner that their may be another more latest technology in the market when you decide to buy one. In this scnerio, more options then required make people preoccupied to the technical details and divert from their main perspectives. While admitting the underlying truth, we must also accept the fact that only a right balance between the two extreams is the only way out. If there were only thinkers or theorists who proposes new and new theories in the absence of implementors, it will hinder the technology growth. Infact, these are the implementors who give imptous for more useful technologies when they try to fix bugs or optimize previous technologies. Now in the end, question arises that how to cope with this situation. The right answer is hidden in the integrated triangle of policy, planning and implementation. Of course, when at enterprise level, goals and requirements are rightly chalked out, and a proper methodology is provided, implementors know the vision of planners and planners realize the problems and capability of implementors then their will be no difficulty in achieving big perspectives and no ambiguity will hinder the true goals and objectives. writing time 45 minutes
