  1. Hi, I just took my Toefl and this is what my score card looked like... Listening 27 structure 13-30 reading 30 Range 233- 290 Well, for those of you who are still to take the test I would give the following tips 1) Ok , there is no way to avoid the tutorial. So all these test books which say skip the tutorial, well they haven't got it correct. So just try to go through it as fast as you can. Actually, I thought it was pretty helpful even though I am a regular computer user. 2) The listening is not tough. It's just that the time is a big factor in this section. So basically you don't have much time to mull over your answers. 3) Now the reading. These are my suggestions... Go for one passage at a time even though you are allowed to navigate through the entire section. What's the point in confusing yourself ? Do not answer the difficult questions(like main idea, or inference questions) first. Navigate through the questions pertaining to the passage and answer all those questions about "meaning" or "what noun does this pronoun refer to"? The reason I suggest doing this is because while answering these simpler questions, you sub consciously read the passage which helps you to answer the more difficult questions.(Tip from Princeton Review) There is no "answer confirm" in the reading section so I was really confused about the whole thing. Here is how it functions. You start answering all the questions, once you reach the last one and press "next" the computer asks you whether you want to quit this section. I would suggest spending time reviewing the answers because the reading section gives you ample time. Anyway that's all for now. Best of Luck to all... :D
  2. :D:o oopssssssssssssssssss both the questions got me!
  3. :)Hi everybody! Thanks Erin, I will still be around a lot.I am going to take my Toefl at the end of this month and I am looking forward to participating in that forum. Thanks Ram. Thank you Deepika. You know I didn't know I had to take that confirmation letter.Luckily I just printed it out before I left home because I thought I might forget my confirmation number. Really these guys don't tell you anything when you take an appointment!! Thanks dk...yea I am relieved but still some work left before I send my applications. Your posts are really good and they helped in my preparation. So a big thank you for that too! Hi solo!! wonder how that is possible? It's really strange...I guess they liked you better than they liked me!;) Natasha
  4. Hi , I just took my GMAT today and this is what my scores were Quant 49 91%ile Verbal 41 93%ile overall 730 97%ile Over the last month,I have gone through this particular thread numerous times.I guess reading the experiences of people who took the test calmed my nerves. These are certain trivial aspects but they may help some of you (in India atleast) check list before you go to the test centre - 1) confirmation letter (yes you have to print it out from the site http://www.prometricindia.com) 2) photo ID (passport and some other ID like drivers license or student's ID etc.) 3) Please don't waste your time and energy the day before the exam (like me) remembering the institute codes for the free scores.Rather check the exact name of the college and the state in which it is located. This may seem rather an easy task for Americans but for others who are not familiar with the states ,knowing the name of the state in which the college you want to send your free score to is in ,is a real help. 4) You are provided with a locker inside the center so don't spend too much time thinking what you can and cannot take inside the center.(and yes I did take a cell phone .I kept it in the locker) 5) Locate the restroom when you enter....you don't want to spend 5 precious minutes of your break locating one. 6)other things like pencils ,scratch paper are provided.Yet there are fools like me who sharpen ten pencils only to keep them in the locker .:o (Yea I got this silly idea from the check list in Kaplan which said take pencils, eraser and sharpener.) 7) Most of us practice on a normal keyboard but the labtops at the Center are a different experience altogether.Be prepared to be a little slower in the AWA section. OK now about the test.... I am obviously not going to reveal anything about the test questions but while i was preparing, going through other people's scores helped me to gauge myself so here are my scores - PP 700,710 Kaplan 650,640,620,580(note the decline!!!) Princeton 670,680,650,740 and the worst one ever Crack Gmat....510 (40 Q 12 V) yes, you read that correctly 12 V so you can only guess how close the material on this test is to the one on the actual GMAT. I whole heartedly agree with Erin that no test can truly help you predict your score;only the powerprep test comes closest. Well that's all for now .Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding preparation for the test. And ofcourse a BIG BIG THANK YOU TO ERIN:D, and ALL OTHER TEST MAGICIANS for their support and help. Natasha
  5. OK sorry the © part 2/5th of an hour is 24 minutes (forgot to type that) HTH
  6. My answer is 94 mins Since they build only one robot at a time... First the 2 robots work at the rate of 1 + 1/2 = 3/2 so they complete one robot in 2/3 rd of an hour ,i.e. 40 minutes....(A) Now the 3 robots work together at the rate of 1 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 4/2 = 2/1 so they complete one robot in 1/2 an hour,i.e 30 minutes.......(B) Now the 4 robots work together at the rate of 1 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 5/2 so they complete one robot in 2/5th of an hour ......© therefore we hve (A) + (B) + © = 94 minutes...

    Happy Thanksgiving!

:)Hi Erin and other TMites, Happy Thanksgiving and Hope you all have a great weekend . And thank you Erin and all other TMites for being so helpful
  8. ok I came up with these (2).... attempt to try and ( "attempt to" is enough) cooperate together( "cooperate" is sufficient)
  9. Amigoro, That is very useful.I agree that it is important to follow the course of the essay. I will go through the site you mentioned and follow the excercise. Thanks, Natasha
  10. The correct choice in a sentence correction should not suffer from redundancy; it should be as concise as possible.I came across a couple of such questions so I am posting them. Questions from the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] 10th edition. never ....again("never "implies that you won't do it again) Q.246 have and will continue ("will continue" should suffice as it implies you have been performing an action in the past) Q.75 atleast as strong as or stronger ("atleast as strong as" or "stronger than" is enough) Q.59,Q.266 prohibiting that... cannot( " prohibit from" is correct usage ,"cannot" is not required) Q.100 The reason ...is because("the reason is that" or "because" is sufficient) HTH:) natasha
  11. The GMAT sentence correction emphasizes on conciseness. In many powerprep explanantions, you will observe that they say "redundant" which means there is the use of an extra word or words which is not required. is gramatically correct but is redundant so you can use 1)the reason is that OR 2) it is because... Remember that when you have two choices which are gramatically correct go for the one which is concise. The GMAT always emphasises "best" choice as against "correct"choice. OK I am making another post with a few redundant phrases that I found on the OG so that it is easy for others to find.
  12. ok....let's see if anybody has any other opinions!! natasha
  13. dkp, i interpreted the question like this... 10= 5*2 so 10(q) is a multiple of 2® prime nos 17 = 17*1 so 17 (q) is a multiple of 1 ® prime no. by that logic if r so in 1) 76= 19 *2 *2 that is it is a multiple of 3 prime nos but it is not divisible by 3 at the same time 12 = 3*2*2 that is it is a multiple of 3 prime nos but is divisible by 3 which is why i ruled out (A) now i am confused regarding the meaning of the question! natasha
  14. Erin/any member who can advice I have written 2 essays, the topics are from GMAT 10th edition OG(analysis of issue + analysis of argument) I read the guidelines to submit the essay , but I am not able to follow how do I get the Number for the essay. I did go through each and every topic listed by Erin for the GRE and these topics are not included. From where can I get the number to post my essay? Natasha
  15. regarding (1) There are some sentence correction problems where you have to follow the direction of the author's thought. This is an example of one of those kinds. What is the author trying to say? That most of the stones are not mineralised or are only partially mineralised. Observe the word"though" in the first part of the sentence. This indicates that the author is going to present a contradiction... so even though the minerals have saturated the bone, most of the stones are not mineralized,or are only partially mineralized. Once you understand this, there is no ambiguity in the answer choice.Because the "so" represents mineralised. Now read this sentence... most are not mineralised or are only partially (mineralised/so) regarding (2) did u miss out the "be" in the question before required? I am assuming you did. About parallelism "required to do something" and "required to do something" can create parallelism... not "required to "and "required that " read these sentences... 1) students will be required to study and that questions be anwered 2) students will be required to study and to answer questions. So if u want to create parallelism this is how you can do so... Corporations will soon be required to the government whether they have the necessary reserves to pay the pension benefits earned by their employees and this information in annual report to shareholders. Thus you can rule out options (A),(B) and (E) In option © "that was " is unnecessary and wordy "being" also is not the correct tense. I think you will agree that this sentence sounds awkward. In option(D) the tense is correct(use of "MUST BE") the sentence does not try to create parallelism instead it introduces an independent clause.(I think there should be a semi colon before the word information) I have tried to be as clear as possible in my explanation. I hope it helps clear atleast some doubts .:)
  16. Thanks Erin. I guess I am just getting a little nervous...so i keep wondering whether what i have is enough. Exactly a week to go...And i am just reviewing the material I have.:) Glad to know thats exactly what you suggest! Thanks again for taking time to write to me. Natasha. And Deepak, No problem... btw I read about you taking the crack- GMAT test. The verbal is really not like the GMAT stuff(infact its totally different) so please don't waste your time fretting on it.
  17. Hi amigoro, Congratulations and let me tell you I am not at all surprised by your verbal scores. I have been reading your essays . Honestly, I just find your essays mindblowing . They reflect your verbal skills and really you have a talent for it... Enjoy the feeling of that awesome score. natasha btw, have you considered writing on a professional level!;)
  18. Hi dkpbus, Infact I had a very disappointing experience with this site. I didn't download the GMAT questions and used to regularly practise online(my mistake). And one fine day (I think a week back) when I logged on to this site , I found that they had changed the site and now you need to sign in and everything was in chinese font!!!! so that's the end of that... hey btw maybe you could check this site, http://www.4tests.com they have 4 free tests, they are ok...but anyway its always good for practice.(for both tests GMAT and TOEFL) For toefl , you could also try this site... http://www.free-toefl.com this is a free site and though you can't download you can take the tests online. will let you know if I find any other sites that may help!!:)
  19. If q is a multiple of primes numbers r,is q a multiple of r? 1) r 2) q=18 Now, q = 2*3*3 so q is a multiple of 3 prime numbers; Thus if q = 18 , q is a multiple of r. so (B) is enough... but the answer is (E)
  20. alex, I guess you must find it strange that most indians get a near perfect score.here are some reasons: 1) In India 200$ is a large amount. It is infact the monthly income for a midldle class household which means if you spend that kind of money on a test ,you have to be very very serious about it.....so most of us study really hard before giving it a shot.no offence but very often i have seen people giving the exam thinking that if they don't do well they'll just take the exam again.this just isn't an option for most of us. 2)Indian entrance exams are really competitive....the "cat" which is for the top management institutes in india conducts a test every year where you have to be in the top .001% if you even want to get called for an interview.btw the forbes magazine rated IIM the most difficult institute to get into (as difficult as it may be digest) even above harvard. You might find it really surpising but i know loads of people who have scored above 700 in the gmat but not made it to the interview!!!It's just the competitive environment. So even if you don't buy the intelligence argument ,it's just that we are forced to be that hardworking...if we want to get anywhere in life! 3)Unemployment is a big issue here...so with a graduate degree you can't really get a good job(if u get one that is).when we apply to universities ,we know that its not the work experience thats going to get us in...which means we work harder for a good GMAT score(even though the actual fact is that a good GMAT score is not going to get you in by itself) 4) It's a big misconception to think that Indians don't have have english language skills. As Erin mentioned ,most of us study in english medium schools .So don't really be surprised by those verbal scores. Also, we don't use calculators at any level of education and you'll find that most indians are pretty quick at math... there are a lot of other reasons....but i think these are just fine.... alex but we work really hard (and I mean everybody including the chinese,....)thats because when you dont have enough oppurtunities like in the states you have to work that little extra hard ... natasha p.s alex i know you have said no offence but it's just not nice to insinuate that Indians cheat.[:(!]

    Thank you

Hi Erin, I have been surfiing the net for a real long time for sites on GMAT. And without doubt yours is the best one:D. As others have mentioned , I too find it truly amazing how you help everybody everyday and that too absolutely free of cost. Also, it is really commendable that there are all serious minded people on this forum who are willing to help each other. I just wish I had been a part of this site a long time back....and feel absolutely jealous of all those people who have been around for such a long time[}:)]....just joking And one thing is for sure , I am going to keep visiting this site even after I complete my GMAT . THANK YOU
  22. dkpbus, Your questions are really making me sit back and think.:) I would go with (D).Why? The plant director argues that nuclear plants are not harmful because the plant releases as much radiation as an average T.V. So we have to find a statement which weakens this statement . You have eliminated (A) © and (E)...rightly so because they are irrelevant to the argument. Now we have to choose between (B) and (D). I agree (B) looks very convincing because it directly attacks the topic. But after a closer look this is what i felt... The statement compares "total amount of radiation released in the environment" with "total amount of radiation released by any T.V"( singular -any T.V). I can't imagine counter attacking the plant director by saying that "your plant releases much more radiation than any T.V." What is important is how much more radiation does the plant release in comparison to all T.V.'s. Infact it is possible that all T.V's could still be emitting much more radiation than the power plant; making it much more harmful to the society. (D) on the other hand has no such loopholes because it clearly says that the nuclear power produces millions more units of energy than are used by "all " local televisions sets combined. This means level of radiation emitted by the nuclear plant has to be higher (the plant director himself says that "the plant releases as much radiation per unit of energy as does the average television.”). Also, the level of radiation emitted has to be significantly higher because we are directly given the figure of million more units(as against "much greater" in B) Additionally, the statement gives us very specific information by saying "Local" T.V sets giving us very comparable figures. Let me know what you think.(and can you please also let me know what the answer actually is from wherever you picked this question:D) ananya
  23. well I have heard of this one too....unfortunately i have no choice but to take it in december.(that inspite of registring in july they didn't have date, apparently all dates till december were filled up)[V] anyway the best thing to do is give it your best shot.Worrying over rumours is not really going to help your cause! btw , you can't think of registering later simply because you are scared that november or december is a bad month to take your exam in.Remember you have to think about the application deadlines!!!
