    I got a job

Congratulations! That is awesome news. CB? R1?
  2. After 4.5 years into my PhD(covid made me delay my market entry by a year), I made it to the other side. I'm not going to share the school with everyone, but its one of the top ones in my field - and I am beyond excited about it. There are some caveats associated with it though. It is away from my family. My wife is a stellar job as an academic and she can't quite move this year. I will be driving 4 hours each way every week. I have young kids so I will be missing out on time with them - and my in laws will be moving in to help take care of the kids. However, the university and department are an ideal place for me to thrive in my research and get my career started. Who knows what will happen in a couple of years? This forum helped me get started with my PhD search and even though I do not post here a lot I still check out the posts once a month. Good luck to all of you applying and to those of you in programs. Keep grinding and work hard! And as Xanthuares mentioned in his job announcement post - a PhD is not for everyone. Leaving academia is not a failure. I know a tonne of people that are miserable and are contemplating leaving academia. Industry is a viable option regardless of what your advisor tells you. Do not be miserable because of someone else's beliefs in what is good for YOU! Do something that makes you happy!
  3. Congrats! I am sure you will be an asset to your new institution!
  4. I was there 2 years ago. Good luck guys! Rooting for all of you.
  5. That Quant score will give them some pause for sure. Strategy programs tend to be stats heavy, so they want to see slightly better scores. YMMV.
  6. I know this is a stressful time for everyone waiting for results. I highly recommend taking up a hobby or meditation to keep the stress levels low!
  7. Great post! Since I'm in the Supply Chain and Logisitics Field maybe I can add some info that you can roll into your OP. Ranking for SCM/Logistics is broken down by the kind of research the school produces. There is an empirical research list, and then an analytical one as well. Both can be found here: University Rankings - The SCM Journal List This list is recognized and has support from most of the leading faculty in the field (Endorsers - The SCM Journal List) This list should not be considered definitive but is a very good indication of where schools rank based on their research output.
  8. Your GRE scores are on the lower end for good schools. take a look at this website for rankings : Supply Chain Management Journal List I would recommend looking at the empirical based rankings to have a better idea of what colleges may be in your grasp. Depending on the research paper quality, and the quality of the journal it appears in, it could really help your profile.
  9. Based on your other post, you are looking at a Phd In Supply Chain Management. Please look here for school rankings : Supply Chain Management Journal List Honestly speaking - we would need more information about the kind of coursework you did in your Masters. Do you have any academic papers? How did you do on your GMAT?
  10. SCM research falls primarily in two camps. Analytical and Empirical. Journal lists for each of these can be found here : Supply Chain Management Journal List This website will also help you figure out the "rankings" (I use this word lightly) of all the programs in the SCM discipline. Take a look at the recent papers in each of the journals to understand where the research is going. Alternatively, you can look up the faculty in the SCM/Logisitics/Operations departments of the Schools listed and their research. Hope that helps.
  11. Ain't that the truth! My first day in the program starts with a 9 am statistics class and ends at 9:30 pm. Since I live about 45 mins away - my day is indeed going to be 14 hours from the get go. Good thing that there are plenty of gyms on campus and I have a 2-hour break on most days to get a workout in.
  12. I just got out of my GA orientation session, did all the paperwork, met with the other (1) student in my cohort, and got the keys to my office. I am super excited to finally start this chapter of my life :livid::livid: .Who else is with me?
  13. This is great advice and echoes what I just posted. The whole process of learning how to develop ideas is crucial. I can't say my ego wasn't hurt when I went through my list of ideas and how the professors poked holes and rejected them. And boy, was I over the moon, when I proposed our current idea and he agreed that it would be worth researching.
  14. I have a slightly different approach towards the question of research. In my statement of purpose and other essays, and during my interviews, I talked about the aspects of my field that I was interested in and the kind of ideas I had. After my acceptance, I talked to my professors about these ideas, I looked into their recent research and found where there was an overlap. I did not really delve into the stats methods used but tried to get a general high-level overview where their interests lay. Where there was an overlap, I sent an email in and set up times to talk on the phone/skype. I asked them to list some papers that I could read in the meantime to develop a better understanding of the material (the bibliographies in the recent papers helped a lot too). I've already started working on my project and am aiming for a conference in September. My program believes that the #1 thing they can do for their students is guide them towards publication. The professor I am working with on this paper has been instrumental in "helping me write for academia", and has constantly provided motivation, mentorship, and guidance throughout this process. As far as teaching responsibilities go, we are expected to teach 1 class a semester for 2 semesters starting the second year. The rest of the time the departments expects us to be in classes and working towards improving our understanding of the literature, and advancing it.
  15. I've started playing golf again. Played a round on Saturday for a 103. Going to the driving range tomorrow, its really remarkable the kind of people you meet and the conversations you have while playing golf.
  16. Depends from one program to other. I got the departmental acceptance in early March with funding info, but the official acceptance from the University system has not yet been sent. So the delay for me currently is about 3 weeks
  17. Haha. That is okay. I was also being a bit tongue in cheek. I am content with what I am. :)
  18. Way to make me feel great guys. I'm 33, about to start. Also happen to be Buddhist. And I ride a BMW GS when its not raining/snowing. I must really be going through a midlife crisis.
  19. So as a side note, I have been adding professors at my school (ones I studied with, and ones I will study with) to my LinkedIn network. Surprisingly all but one have accepted and a few have even endorsed me for my skills. Certainly helps a bit with the impostor syndrome.
  20. Great write up! However, I would slightly disagree and actually recommend taking that vacation. Taking a vacation is going to be super hard over the next 4-5 years and maybe taking it before your program starts will allow you to clear your head and get mentally prepared for the PhD.
  21. I like the cut of your jib. I'll skip the cigar, but I do have a bottle of Yamazaki 18 year I got as a gift at my wedding that I need to open. :) :) :)
  22. I finally got my official acceptance letter! I want to thank everyone on this forum. Even though I mostly lurked reading other's experiences helped me through this process. Good luck to the others that are waiting on their admits!
  23. Oh man, I shudder to think about Minnesota winters - and I am from the great lakes region so not a stranger to the cold and snow. Wisconsin is not as bad... If you don't mind me asking, what concentrations are you looking at?
