  1. If your goal is to enter into the labor market after your master's degree in economics then you can look into this program: Master in Industrial Econmics and Markets, UC3M - they encourage people from business and engineering background to apply for this program.
  2. Hello Everyone! I have been following this forum for sometime now and it has greatly helped me during the application period. I have offers from 3 different universities and I need some inputs/help to decide which school to join. 1. MS Economics, KU Leuven (1yr course) 2. QEM Erasmus Program 3. Master in Industrial Economics & Markets, UC3M I have decided to first complete a masters program to boost my profile since my undergrad was in engineering. I aim to apply for top50 economics PhD programs after completion of masters degree. In this case which school will be most helpful in building a good profile for top50 PhD programs and how would you rate these schools in terms of their academic and faculty reputation.
  3. Hi RubenDD94, I've been admitted into UC3M program "Industrial Economics and Markets". I wanted to get a feedback/review about the program and economics department at UC3M. My main goal is to do a Phd in economics after completing the master. I have compared the two programs offered by the econ department at UC3M - "Master in Economic Analysis" and "Industrial Economics and Markets" - and there's a significant difference b/w the two in all aspects. Since I was not offered the MAE program, I'm inclined towards accepting the other program. How would you rate this program to get into US top 30-50 Phd programs. Thanks!
  4. I have been planning to retake the GRE, but I'm not sure if I have sufficient time to retake it and apply before the first deadline of 31 Dec.Can I send my scores at a later date and still be considered for first round of evaluation? Any suggestion on the range of schools to apply for my profile.
  5. Hi All, I have been reading this forum for quite some time to gather information about econ programs. I have decided to apply for MS in Econ (preferably 2 year program) for 2017 academic year and I would like if someone can help me evaluate my profile and suggest schools where I have a decent chance of acceptance. I am an international student from India with an Engineering degree. I have 18+ months of work experience in market research and data analytics. I have no formal background in economics but given my interest in this field I've completed micro, macro and econometric undergrad sequence from MIT OpenCourseWare. Type of Undergrad: Engineering (top 30-50 engineering college in India) Undergrad CGPA: 8.2/10 Type of Grad: N/A GRE: 161-Q 149-V 4.0-AW (TOEFL - 101) Math Courses: Calculus I-III (B), Intro Linear Algebra (A), Numerical Analysis (A), Complex Analysis (B), Linear Programming, Probability Theory (B) Other Courses: Operations Research, Statistical Quality Analysis, Other engineering related courses Letter of Recommendation: First from my math prof, I have worked with him on several projects and I am confident he'll write a strong LOR. Second from my employer, a very senior executive who did his MBA from IIM (top 5 B-School in India). Research Experience: Business oriented research (more like ex-post analysis and strategy development). I hope this counts as research experience. Worked as an RA during my final year, but it was more engineering and math related. Teaching Experience: None SOP: I have included my motivation to study economics, work experience and nature of work, and my math experience and other significant projects from college. Hopefully it's a strong motivation letter. Concerns: (1) Low math grade in Calculus and Probability Theory. A lot of users on this forum stress on having higher grades in math. (2) No econ courses. Although I have tried to cover all the undergrad econ courses online but I do not have any credibility to prove that. (3) How will the second LOR from my employer be evaluated by adcoms? I know that the second LOR will also be strong and it'll bring alot of credibility to my work experience discussed in the SOP and CV, but I'm unaware of its negative impact if any. Applying To: Please suggestUS and European schools with good track record of sending students to top PhD programs. I want to apply for programs with 2 year curriculum so that I can have maximum exposure to economic courses and develop my research interest for PhD studies. Any suggestions for this profile will be welcome. Thanks!!
  6. I agree with you that these reading questions are on the easier side, but it can be compared with the level of questions that appear on TOEFL. Also, I think that answers to Q6 - B and Q15 - B
  7. Hi Mamta, In order to answer such tricky questions, we must apply the rule of eliminating theose options which are not suitable or potentially incorrect options. So, option A and B can be the potential causes of using renewable sources of power. And option D is contradicting the paragraph. Thus leaving us with option C.
  8. Hi Tutonic, I'm in the process of applying to Econ schools for master's program and my question to you is: Do the adcom only look at the quant score of GRE. I have 160+ in quant but really low score in verbal and I think I do not have sufficient time to re-take the exam.
  9. Hi Hkke, I looked into the syllabus of Math camp, but I don't understand how in one month course all those topics be covered. Also is there an option to take only a specific part of the entire course i.e. modules such as Real Analysis and Optimization Techniques. I feel that I have covered most of the courses at undergrad studies. Although the course may not be as intensive as offered at masters level. I also wanted to ask if there is any scholarship or partial waiver offered for the course, as it is very highly priced for international students. Regards, Sam
  10. Hi Krishna, If I may suggest that you should also look for the same course in Western Europe. Given data science as a new program, in many universities across US and Europe, there wouldn't be much difference on the academics front. European universities can be your safety schools. Best Regards, Sam
  11. Hi, I am also in a similar dilemma. I'll have one LOR from my math prof and another LOR from my current employer. I'd like to know the importance given to LORs from current employers. Especially if one is employed in an industry which is very closely related to the field of study one like to pursue in masters course.
  12. Hi, I am an international student with a degree in engineering and wants to apply for Economics Master's for 2017 academic year. I have taken a lot of math courses during college but I'm not sure how relevant they will be for econ masters. So, will this crash course in math help me strengthen my profile. Thanks and any comment will be very valuable. P.S Presently, I do not have a detailed description about topics covered in math during college but if it's needed for more through profile evaluation then I can post that at a later date.
  13. I am also in a similar situation. I have secured a very positive letter from my engineering professor and another from my work manager who completed her graduate study in econ from LSE. Is it necessary that I have my first letter from someone from econ or as Tutonic pointed that LOR for Masters application are mainly about the academic capabilities and potential of the candidate.
