  1. Been awhile since I've been here, but I had amazingly got admittance and joined a PHD a few year back. Unfortunately I left after a year due to many issues including family illness but also issues with some faculty and having my desired research area changed. While I was excited and loved the program I was not fully prepared for what it entailed and when I started getting pushed into a different research area I wasn't in a position to fight or adapt so I left. I did not get close to any professors while there or keep in touch with them sadly since I was so stressed. Quitting the program was ultimately for the best since I was able to help care for my guardian and be with them when they passed 8 months after I left but going back has been on my mind ever since, I want to reapply and try again for a PhD but I'm not sure how to handle the fact that I left one already and also how to get new LORs. I had already struggled the first time and now I'm almost 10 years out of undergrad. I was wondering if I can ask my previous recommenders to be one again or if it would be weird. Also how do I address my leaving in my SOP and is it bad I don't have a rec from my prior program.
  2. I’m starting a phd (accounting) this fall as I’m sure many others here are too and I was hoping some students could help answer questions and explain issues that will crop up during the program. My problem is that even though it’s a few month away I already feel like the weakest link in my class. I have the worst math background with no formal calculus classes and will be attempting to skip to calc 2 while the other student has a strong math background. I know logically I wouldn’t have been accepted to this amazing program if they didn’t believe in me but I feel so far behind already. So I ask others what should I do to prepare for the program and how do you overcome feeling like the worst person in your program?
  3. As an incoming accounting student is there any resources you recommend to help with the Econ part. I’ve been assigned some analytical papers to read for a summer seminar and while I understand what the author is saying I can’t understand the math part of how they prove and support their research even after spending hours on it. These papers are mostly published in the Econ and accounting journal or Econ and finance journal so naturally I’m worried about first year classes. If if it helps I’ve had two stats classes and a intro to econometrics class but none of those classes were calculus based.
  4. Chiming in here what are thoughts on roommates in low COL areas? Living near campus (10-15 minute bus ride) all that’s left is is expensive with studios and 1 bedrooms close to $1,000 or I can go 30 minutes away and get one for $600. I don’t wanna be too far my first year so I’m considering finding another grad roommate maybe a medical student or something and get a 2 bdrm at a more reasonable cost.
  5. I figure since things are slowing down and the last thread I found was from years ago maybe we could have a new laptop thread for incoming students. I get to pick a new laptop for my program and I could use some help and I’m sure other incoming students could as well. I’m a pc person debating between XPS 15 or Asus Zenbook myself. Maybe we could post what area we are in and what laptop we have and pros and cons.
  6. I would casually ask for an itenerary then you can better judge how to dress. For my campus visit although I wasn’t being interviewed other were, we walked to breakfast, drove to school, walked to lunch and walked to happy hour and it was in the 80’s that day both guys were carrying their jackets sweating. Most places should have no problem telling you the agenda then look at the weather and decide on what’s appropriate.
  7. Got a lot of pressure to commit to my only acceptance and finally caved after 2 weeks of daily emails. So of course I just got an interview invite from a top 5 program that I’ll have to turn down. I second guessed my self I had 1 offer 5 rejections and the only 2 schools outstanding where both reaches so I figured they already made decisions. Logically I don’t think I would’ve been a great fit at this school they are known as kinda cut throat but still hurts to never know what could’ve been.
  8. Anyone feeling pressure to commit from schools? I got an offer pretty early and it’s my only one. They are really pressuring me to give them a final answer and I don’t know what to do. I haven’t heard from 3 programs all reaches but still I hate committing before even waiting to hear back. I understand they don’t want to over or under extend offers but what if I say yes today and get an interview next week?
  9. Accounting seems to be dead this year. Does anyone know about Michigan, Penn State, or Cornell? I saw one acceptance from Mich on grad cafe but I don’t know if I can trust it.
  10. Since many of us are starting to hear back from programs and weighing each one to find the perfect match I had a few questions I didn’t find using the search bar. I know sometimes there can be hidden University fees that will reduce a stipend but how can we tell and what else could reduce a stipend and make a program much less competitive for applicants that aren’t initially thought of? Some things I was wondering about was research, do all programs pay for or provide access to any research tool you need or will you be shelling out your own money if you need something not available at your university? What about software I don’t know what is needed for research in each field but if it is widely used do university’s usually provide it? I’m sure there are other things I don’t know about since I’m not a student yet but from current students what are hidden costs that took you off guard and how do prospective students make sure that our stipend isn’t gonna be a few thousand less than what’s on paper due to fees.
  11. If your already admitted I’m sure they will work with you to visit another time they should understand that you have a job and life outside of applications. Just ask your contact. I myself had trouble to visit although my school didn’t have a specific day, they worked with me and kept me in the loop of good days to come to sit in on a workshop and also when other prospective students would be there.
  12. Notification Type: Rejection Institution Name: UIUC Concentration: Accounting Type Email actually kinda thankful that they went ahead and let me know it feels better than waiting around just wondering. No interview or anything
  13. If a program that you interviewed with said they had a few more candidates to interview and you would hear back by x date, y date at the latest what do you do when y date passes with still no word? Should I email or give it some more time? Does this mean I’m not a top pick and they are probably taking to other candidates first before talking with me again?
  14. I have an interview today and haven’t heard a confirmation or anything back from the school which has my anxiety through the roof. My only other interview they connected with me on skype immeadiately, sent a confirmation, and even sent an email that morning saying they were looking forward to the interview. This school asked me if I was available on date at time I said yes and send my skype ID and it’s been radio silence for a week. I’m almost worried they forgot about me. This isn’t leaving a great impression of the school when my first interview school seemed nothing but thrilled to talk to me.
  15. Notification type: Skype interview Institution: Indiana University Concentration: Accounting Type of Notification:email Comments: plenty of dates to choose from so unsure how many they are interviewing. Mention of campus visit if Skype interview goes well
