  1. I emailed asking that question and found out that while it has not been guaranteed in the past few years there has only been one year in which some first year students were not funded. Most students do get at least partial funding in their first year.
  2. Can anyone confirm the UC Davis post on GC?
  3. I would also say that if a professor has been encouraging you to go to grad school then they will write you a good letter. I had four professors that I considered asking, but three of them had always been very supportive of me going to grad school (some of them even telling me I should apply before I had decided I wanted to get a PhD). After I decided to apply all of the three professors who became my letter writers were always very willing to help me. They all looked over my list and added some schools. They also helped me decide what math classes I should be taking. I guess I would say that another way to judge how good of a recommendation you are going to get would be to see how much time they are willing to get to know and help you in their office hours.
  4. I am an undergrad at UT right now and I love Knoxville. Knoxville is really affordable! You can find apartments for about 4/500 dollars that are in a good area and pretty large. I always think of the Heights when I think about affordable living in Knoxville. It is about a 5 minute drive to campus. Also if you wanted to live in walking distance it would be really easy to find something close to campus. It would probably cost around 600/700 for a nicer apartment near campus. There are some that are really cheap, but I would not really recommend living in some of them. Typically if you are looking in the fort I would say that staying closer to Cumberland is better/safer/nicer. Also there are a lot of great restaurants in Knoxville! You can make 18-22K work in Knoxville while having plenty of money to go out to eat and go to concerts and bars. The weather in Knoxville is pretty great. We usually get about one snow day a year and it is because we get like 3 inches of snow. Most of the winter is above freezing. Also during the spring and fall you will want to spend all of your time outside. We are close to some great places to hike and explore. The summer can get a bit hot. Also the faculty are great! They are always willing to take time out of their day to talk to me about applying to grad school, so I would imagine that they would be even more willing to help their graduate students. Also I know that we have a lot of people who do research on education, econometrics, and health. There is also the Boyd Center for Economic Research and the Baker Center for Public Policy that do a lot of economic research that grad students help with. Also the placements at UT have been going up over the past few years. I would be happy to answer any other questions you have about UT!
  5. I think business casual is typical. I think a lot of the visit says are on Fridays and normally that is a causal day faculty, but it is still the first impression you will make so I wouldn't be too causal.
  6. Did anyone else who applied to UT Austin that got rejected get an email about their masters program?
  7. I haven't heard from UCSB and UCSD either
  8. How would you rank Ohio State's AED program compared to other ARE departments?
  9. I am one of them. I didn't get an email I just logged into the website and it said that the status was no offer made. I clicked on it and got a notice that said we cannot offer you admissions at this time.
  10. I know! It hasn't had any new results since last night.
  11. From looking at GC it looks like Michigan State might use an implicit waitlist. Maybe that is just me being hopeful. What do y'all think?
  12. Anyone who got into or rejected from Michigan State: Did your online portal status change? I haven't heard anything.
  13. Hey! I am in the same boat as far as deciding between OSU AED and pure economics. OSU is the only AED/ARE school that I applied to. I want to do environmental/climate change/energy economics which is typically more often housed in the pure Econ departments. How are you deciding how to rank ARE programs with pure econ programs?
