  1. Seems like people prefer social media rather than forums nowadays. Only old guys like us are still here.
  2. Congratz on finishing your master degree! The only problem is that, the bar for master-degree holder is much higher than applicants with only a bachelor. You can basically competing with other masters with top RR or publication. I frequently see applicants with two top fields, two business tops, or a finance top 3 while applying. You have a very good profile, yet too common. The place you'll land depends on how well your recommenders are connected, and on if they are willing to use their network resources in your benefits. The up-side that you seem to know how to research and reach-out the profs. So if you match with someone early, then you'll be set!

  4. I think he is a troll. If he is a matured master and he wants to get-in programs above BC, he'll need at least one top field R&R. The bar for applicants with a master is usually higher than applicants with only UG education. If he can get one top R&R in 2 years, then the best option for him is spend four years in BC and get two top R&R, and then apply for faculty jobs.
  5. The only problem is that you applied to too few school. If you applied to all 26 MRM and HRM, I think you might land your lottery somewhere. Best wishes to your journey!
  6. From past experience Penn sent out rejections in April.
  7. Forgot to update the results. I applied in the 2020 cycle to all HRM and most MRM. Only one UHRM and one MRM accepted me. All other HRM and MRM rejected my application. I won't disclose which school exactly because people can easily identify my true identity.
  8. GPA is an OK predictor of future GPA; it is negatively yet insignificantly correlated with future research ability. The Limitations of the GRE in Predicting Success in Biomedical Graduate School
  9. As a PhD applicant, I am working while taking a PhD level course part-time. I am getting a B and I don't have time to improve my grade due to working. The school I am applying to only requires me to include schools that I attended for more than a year, not every single course that I took from any university. The course is a hardcore course with B as average. If I am applying to top 5 programs, would this grade help me or hurt me? My whole profile is here: https://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/161313-profile-evaluation-help-needed-non-traditional-applicant-weak-coursework.html
  10. Thanks for you comments. I guess that you are either a faculty member or an advanced PhD researcher. Last year, one top 20 tenured faculty member told me almost the same thing you told me: if I got a top-field in early 20s, then it is almost guaranteed that I would get in 02138/9. Some other professors and advanced students also told me the same thing. However, his department rejected my application last year...
  11. Assuming that the strength is the same, do “three econ letters” better than “two econ letters+one math/stats letter"?
  12. Math Course: about 20 undergraduate level math courses, including calculus series, analysis series, linear algebra, algebra series, ODE, PDE, geometry, probability, statistics, stochastic process, math-fin. Mostly A with few A- and one B, 3.9 subject GPA Econ Courses: Business school econ courses, not PhD level, mostly A, A-, one B. One micro-theory (business school level), five applied economics courses, and about 10 finance and management courses with application focus.
  13. Of course I asked they basically says something generic that I got chances and I need to apply to any programs that interests me. They got very tight schedule such that I don't think scheduling a 30-60 min meeting only for discussing my application is a good idea, provided that we need more time for finishing up the papers. They are happy to talk about research but I am not sure if they are willing to talk about application stuffs as when we started our research, I demonstrated a genuine research interests without mentioning that I want to do a PhD afterward. I am kind of afraid of that if I talk about the application too much, they might think that the only reason that I am doing research is to get a position.
  14. Thank you William for sharing your valuable experience and I've also come across your blog. Do you mind to share some of the " reasons that other applicants wouldn't be able to copy that easily"? From your blog I guess it is something like "why did I choose the city", and "why did I choose a PhD in this age", or " great goal of Corporate Finance of maximizing shareholder value was to maximize consumer value"? Seems like it is important to have a clear and innovative research topic in mind, and demonstrate prior research efforts on this specific direction. You've basically made a smooth story that sounds very natural and reasonable, so everyone who read about it would be sure that you are indeed motivated. But for me I am not as knowledged as you; I did not have 20 years of practice or 5 years of teaching experience. What is some of the strongest motivation to do a PhD for a younger applicant?
  15. Thank you for your warm and encouraging post. Following your advise, I will ask my referees exactly the same thing that you told me. I rarely asked about similar questions before. I asked which discipline shall I apply to and he said that I should do whatever I am truly interested in. Do you think asking those super-busy big name professor the questions related with rec-letter and application would annoy them or is it a signal that they are well respected by me? By the way, the lack of econ background seems fine for B-School, but what about econ phd application? Would the lack of econ background nullify my chances? Do I still have a chance in Top 10 Econ?
  16. Thank you for your reply and sorry for some ambiguous terms. "Senior" means a very old and big named professor with endowment chair. A "top field" means economics top fields not B-school FT50. What would be a classic route for a B-School PhD in top schools? Does the applicant has to have prior research experience directly with the professors in that field (say Marketing)? By "finding the right school to apply", do you mean that I have to find the correct supervisor with the common research interests, so he can take me? I am applying to top 20 economics departments (but I highly doubt that I am going to get a good offer) and maybe top 30 business schools.
  17. For example, as an adult applicant, if I have more than three research papers, then I might want to have more than three referee who worked with me in those projects and tell the adcomm that I significantly contributed.
  18. UG Top20 Math (3.9)+Science (3.6), overall 3.7 due to not studying -- partying too much during UG. No econ courses. I did well in UG real analysis and stochastic process, but I did not take any graduate level Math courses. Master Top 20 management, 3.7 due to not studying -- I am working and doing research at the same time. Some Econ courses but at the B-school level only. My work is policy related; not a top place/big brand. GRE: 160/167/4.5. I did not study for it because I got research to do. I can try to invest several weeks to score a 169 on V/Q but I guess it is unnecessary. Math Course: about 20 undergraduate level math courses, including calculus series, analysis series, linear algebra, algebra series, ODE, PDE, geometry, probability, statistics, stochastic process, math-fin. Mostly A with few A- and one B, 3.9 subject GPA Econ Courses: Business school econ courses, not PhD level, mostly A, one B. Research: One top field with revision requested. Two top fields submitted with AE/Editor coauthoring. One other working paper that could be tried to submitted to top 5. My research is between consumer theory, IO, policy, and a bit finance-related. Presented in top Economics/Business conferences (like AEA AFA) for five times. Letter writers: Currently one strong econ letter from a senior in top 5 (coauthor, regular meeting); one b-school letter from a senior top 5 (coauthor, met for several times); one strong stats/math letter from a senior in top 5 (coauthor, regular meeting last year); one letter from an econ AP (non star) from top 20 (taking courses only); one letter from an econ AP (non star) from top 20 (coauthor). May invest more time to find better letter writers. # of school to be applied: Honestly I don't know. If the number would not cause a problem for letter writers, then I would try to apply to as many schools as I can. Dream Schools: US top 5 or UK top 2 As a nontraditional applicant, I know that in top places UGs with perfect grade and a good thesis are preferred. So what shall I prioritize? Here is my list: 1. Revising papers 2. Submit to Top 5 3. Get another stronger letter in Econ/B-school 4. Write an impressive SOP to explain my experience, non-traditional background, and my poor grades 5. Improve GRE Does it sound reasonable? Thank you in advance for your advices!
  19. I've tried to publish a post but it is under moderation. I don't know how to check the status. In fact, I cannot even see the post in my personal account. I apologize that the formatting for my post was a bit substandard. How to check the status of moderation process and revise and resubmit my post? By the way, since I am interested in both Econ and B-School PhD, are we allowed to publish two related posts under the two sub-forum? I was just submitting the posts and I apologize for any inconvenience if this is not allowed by our forum rules.
  20. UG: Top20 Math (3.9)+Science (3.6), overall 3.7 due to not studying -- partying too much during UG. No econ courses Master: Top 20 b-school, 3.7 due to not studying -- I am working and doing research at the same time. My work is policy related; not a top place/big brand. Some Econ courses but at the B-school level only. GRE: 160/167/4.5. I did not study for it because I got research to do. May invest more time to find better letter writers. First Question: What discipline in B-school shall I apply to? I love to do marketing but my paper/background seems fit finance. Also my policy-related paper and work experience fits the TOM/innovation program. My strongest letter would be from an economics professor, but I did not have enough economics courseworks for an econ PhD. So I am having a hard time to decide. Second Question: As a nontraditional applicant, what shall I prioritize? Here is my list in the decreasing order of importance: 1. Revising papers 2. Submit to Top 5 3. Get another stronger letter in Econ/B-school 4. Write an impressive SOP to explain my experience, non-traditional background, and my poor grades 5. Improve GRE Does it sound reasonable? Would a strong rec letter from the academic advisor help to explain my non-traditional cases? Thank you for your advice! Any other comments are welcome.
  21. Some applicants to MIT did have top 3 finance/ top 10 Econ published/RR
  22. Congrats! Go for a MA at Upenn/Columbia. They take anyone with $$$ Getting master funding is near impossible anywhere, anyways. If you want to stay in NA or EU, LSE might be a good choice. But people from the rich Middle east and east Asia looks down upon any degrees (including Oxbridge PhD) from UK.
