  1. I just got done taking the GRE, and it was extremely difficult, so I wanted to see if I could reduce a bit of misery. My advice that is applicable to the whole test is this: all of the study aids and mock tests available to me (and I went through my local library, and used books from five different companies, including ETS) only provide two essay questions, two verbal sections, and two quantitative sections. This is shorter than the actual test, which apparently always has an additional verbal or quantitative section. Practicing this way does not prepare you for the real test, which has one extra experimental section. So, every time you take a mock test, plan ahead to take an extra verbal or math section from another practice test, and tack it on. I wish I would have. As I was going through the local library, I did use books from five different companies, and I would truly make sure that you use both the ETS guide, and at least one other. ETS is the truest to their own test, and is therefore the best means of getting a true simulation (and has the fewest typos and minor errors, which is good). However, they are a bit purist, and do not tell you about things like the most common GRE words, et cetera. Most of the other books feel slightly off in one direction or another, but give better clues about how to work around problems when you can't think of the answer, or shortcuts, and so forth. That being said, I did want to issue a slight caution about specific editions of an overall helpful book from a particular company. One of my favorites was Kaplan, because they offered short lists of the most common GRE words (twelve, and then the next twenty), and they offered a Latin and Greek root list. I really wanted to learn the roots, so I recopied the list from the 2014 edition, and added to definitions and examples where I could. I found errors (not just typos), and even thought about notifying the company, but, when I went back through my list to check against the book, I used the 2016 edition, and found that they had seen the errors (I imagine got a new editor), and corrected them. So, I don't know which editions the errors started or ended in, except that by 2016, things were fixed. In fact, I would recommend Kaplan, because they are the only current book I found offering the features I talked about (and, as I remember, they also offered a nice listing of edit helps for the essays, et cetera). Just get a newer edition.
  2. I am not a technologically savvy person, and I do not see the last post I made with an organized list of the issue questions, so this may simply float in the ether of my computer's world, or the internet. My original goal in joining was to reduce the misery of others in studying for the GRE by sharing a couple of the aids I'd made for myself, and a little advice that might help others. I was going to add the argument list, this morning, but since I do not see the issues list posted yesterday, I won't post the argument list, with the idea that the list might make the post too long. However, if someone wants to tell me what I might have done wrong, I'll try, again, with both lists. None of the questions are exact repeats of one another (one scenario with multiple directions is common, and slightly different wording to or tweaks of the scenario are also common), but close enough that I ended up with a frequent feeling of deja vu as I was practicing. So, if my other post took, and I just can't find it, the issues list is out there, somewhere (and there was also an organization of the issues list by number only, without the questions from jennyp, but it was from 2005). If it is not, you may find it helpful to re-organize the lists so that you don't repeat yourself Two other notes on the essays. When I actually got to the test and started writing, I found that my problem was lack of discipline in making myself stay on topic, rather than not knowing the topic. Just practicing good form may be more important than the specific questions, though I feel they both help. And, while I know this is the argument essay forum, I will add that in the issue essays, after I got the list organized, nearly a full third of the questions were education- and learning-related. So, if you are practicing by topic, I would devote one-third of practice to education questions in the issue section. One last general note: Do not let yourself practice mock tests with only two essay questions, two verbals, and two math. There is, apparently always, a final experimental section of either verbal or math, and if you're not ready for it, you will bonk.
  3. I just finished taking the GRE, and for me, it was harrowing (though whining is, perhaps, unwise). However, as I was studying, I organized both the analyze an issue and the analyze an argument lists from 2015, to reduce repetition of questions. None of the repetitions were precise--often there could be, say, three different sets of instructions for one initial idea, or multiple permutations of the same issue--but they were close enough that having organized lists, with the questions that were practically the same or close, grouped, was helpful. If it is not an infringement of copyright (and I notice that on Magoosh, they print the questions without the directives, so I am hopeful that it is not), I hope to reduce the suffering of others by offering them up (If I can plow through my computer illiteracy to get them uploaded. If I cannot, I notice a 2005 thread by jennyp that has the issues organized by numbers). But first, whether I get these attached, or not, my general feedback, both from the organized lists, and from my essay-writing experience during the actual test is: (from the list) out of a nine-and-one-quarter-page, eight-point-font document for the issues list, nearly three of the pages were education-related (though I include teaching and learning techniques under education), so if a person is practicing by issue, I would make at least one-third of the practice attempts on education-related questions. From the actual test, my gut instinct about my own error was that I allowed myself to fly too far on a tangential topic, though I roughly related it. This suggests that at least my error would have been better mitigated by discipline in sticking to the rules of the game (in this game, the broken rule was staying on topic) than in working on more topics. That being said, I will attempt to get these either added in-line, or uploaded. (Please not these were done for personal use, so are a bit more informal than I would have otherwise done.) INILINE ATTEMPT at issues: GENERAL NOTE: SOMETIMES ANNOUNCING THE NEARLY SAME AS PERMUTATION, SOMETIMES NOT, AND MANY OTHER INCONSISTENCIES, AND RANDOMNESSES OF HEADINGS… 19) MY COPY ERROR—18 & 19, BOTH HERE AND ON THE JUST NUMBERED LIST WERE REPEATS.
