Happy with my one acceptance but should've applied to econ programs outside the top 25, especially in such a competitive year.

Maybe I’m a bit too paranoid but I wouldn’t wait till the last few hours because to accept the offer (at least at the school I’ve been accepted to), I have to print out the letter, sign it, scan it and send it by email. Ideally I’d like to get an acknowledgment email from the school before the deadline

Good to hear from all others in the same boat! I have a question, what should we do if we don’t get off the waitlist by tomorrow? Should we accept our best offer and hope that they will let us renege later?

Less than a week to the deadline and so many of us still seem to be on waitlists. I don’t understand what’s holding up this market from clearing. Is it a few offer hoarders who are not turning down offers? Is it because admission is so noisy at the top schools that almost everyone is waitlisted at a more dominant school (relative to their other offers)? Someone needs to create a model to explain this

Has anyone else tried to get an update from a school on the status of their waitlist? I sent an email a while back asking if there was any chance I’d get an offer but didn’t even get a reply. Wondering if other schools are as unresponsive considering how busy this season is

Still haven't heard back from Maryland even though they've sent out acceptances, rejections and waitlists. They told me few days ago that they'll be making offers all the way till April 15. Seems like they're just playing it super safe

Can confirm that one of the faculty members at a school I'm waitlisted at also told me that they're sending out exactly the amount of acceptances as their desired class size (and I'm assuming waitlisting more people than usual to account for the offers that will be turned down).

Emailed UT and got a reply back saying I’ve been rejected. So if you haven’t heard back, it’s probably IR

I haven’t heard back from UCLA, UC Davis, UT Austin and UMD. Does anyone know if these schools are sending more acceptances/waitlists. Will probably email them if no one here has info.

I haven't heard back from a lot of schools that have apparently sent out both acceptances and rejections. Beginning to wonder if some of these schools won't do waitlists at all but will just wait till April to see how many accept offers and then send more out accordingly.

IMO if you're serious about doing a PhD, I don't understand why you would waste an entire year just because the classes are remote. PhDs aren't MBAs, the classes aren't big and you don't need to "network" with your classmates. It's quite a lonely experience and it's probably good to get used to that in the first few years. If the concern is only about the learning experience, as someone who grew up learning on YouTube (all the way through high school to undergrad), I actually prefer watching a recorded lecture. I would've done a LOT better during my undergrad if I could pause and rewatch the lectures.

I don’t think it’s wise to assume they’re ‘implicit rejections’. Many schools send out multiple rounds of offers. Especially since this year people seem to have applied to a lot of schools. My hypothesis is that the number of applications at places like Michigan are exploding because it lies in the center of the distribution between the very top schools and the ones which are great but not the best. What this means is that they probably received (and accepted) many applications from very strong candidates who wouldn’t have applied there in a regular year. If they don’t adjust for this by keeping a large pool of applicants in the waiting list, there is a possibility that they will underestimate the number of people who will accept their offer and will have to send out more offers later. Take all of this with a pinch of salt though, I have too much spare time to think up these crazy theories these days

It's certainly a brutal year, hard to not take these rejections personally. What made me feel a bit better was that I got accepted to a program that's supposed to be much harder to get into than another one that I got rejected from. Seems like it's possible to get rejected for reasons that have nothing to do with your profile's strength so don't sweat it!

University of Chicago mourns loss of PhD student Yiran Fan | University of Chicago News As much as I’d like to go to the best university that I can get into, this incident has made me wonder if the safety of a city should be part of my utility function when deciding where to go. I’m not too sure if these incidents have now become normalized for Americans and so they don’t pay much attention to them, but to me it’s shocking that something like this can happen right outside a university that’s apparently one of the best in the world. Which other dangerous cities like Chicago should us international students be avoiding completely when deciding where to go for our PhDs?

Thanks for starting this. What is everyone doing in this waiting period? I have a full time job but feel like I should start revising math and some of my master's courses.

Most top 20/30 have waived the GRE for this cycle. Just don't submit if you're confident about the rest of your profile.

No one will care about your undergrad thesis, especially because you did another one during your master's. Your grades on math/econ courses will be way more important
