  1. Every on campus interview I went on also involved a discussion of which other schools I was considering and where I was in the application process. By the time you're at the on-campus interview, it's simultaneous evaluation of you and whether you'll fit, and a chance for them to sell you on why you should accept if an offer comes. There was also LOTS of time for questions...I was completely out of things to ask by the end of the day and was recycling questions. Lots of standard "Why do you want a PhD?" "Why XXX department?" "Why this school?" "Would you be comfortable in XX city?"
  2. Worth considering that the GSU program has a close relationship with Georgia Tech and Emory business schools, so you can also take classes there. There are even students at GSU with GT faculty on their dissertation committees and vice versa.
  3. Take a look at who you're meeting. If you're meeting senior people in the field or the school, there's a good chance they'll be in a suit. I would DEFINITELY wear a sport coat at a minimum.
  4. If your statement of purpose is not well-written, or if your TOEFL is low (if not a native English-speaker), I agree that this verbal score will be a red flag at top programs.
  5. I had a school ask if I wanted to go there. I think they could tell that it was a backup school for me and they were a little behind schedule-wise. They basically said that if I would accept the offer, they would send it to me right away, but that if I wasn't sure or if I changed my mind, to let them know and they would give me an offer at that time. The POI I was talking to is pretty senior in the field and clearly has a good amount of pull in the B-school. I didn't take it poorly at all; he was just trying to keep his options open and not give me an offer if I was just going to reject it later and force him to go to his waitlist. For a T20 school, though, that's a tough choice. I think in your case you need should respond back that you'd really like a chance to meet faculty/students and tour campus before choosing--and could we put off the deadline on the offer until then? "The other offers I've received have an April 15 deadline. I certainly hope to have everything sorted well before then and know that everyone is trying to manage their waitlist, etc."
  6. I had a Skype interview with Georgia Tech Marketing and a flyout interview earlier this week. Final decisions not made yet.
  7. Programs "feel" different. It's not necessarily associated with rank or size either. The flyout is an invaluable chance for you to learn more about how a program looks and feels. Do people seem happy? How are the workspaces? It's also a chance to meet people who you could work with, talk to at conferences, etc. So you should take advantage of the chance to meet them. If you know something that, already, has made up your mind, then don't waste their time. If you have an offer from a T10 that is your dream school, I don't think there's a need to visit an R2 university that you had as a safety school.
  8. Schools care much more about Quant than Verbal or AW. I had a 97% Verbal, 95% AW, and 87% Quant. Several schools asked if I thought my Quant score was an accurate reflection of my abilities (no comments about my higher scores on the other sections!) and I said that I probably could have done better but was working 60 hours a week and had just adopted a child when I was studying for the test. I have a high GPA from a top Engineering undergrad program, so most folks were happy with that answer. But I think you're probably fine; just make sure your statement of purpose is well-written. EDIT: Consumer Behavior is probably the most competitive of the marketing disciplines, so make sure your application is tight and don't hesitate to go pretty far down the rankings if you want to be sure that you get an offer. Every department will have TONS of CB applicants, both from marketing and business backgrounds, but also psych, sociology, etc.
  9. I have a flyout interview with UMN next week for IDS. I know there are a couple other flyouts for UMN programs as well. A friend had a UNC Skype interview (Operations) last week. I haven't heard from UNC either way though (Strategy).
  10. Had an interview with Maryland for MIS. Some UMD programs (Operations Mgt/Mgt Science) are apparently not taking students this year.
