Adding onto the initial post, does anyone have any idea about the GPA requirement to get into SIEPR? Would a 3.7 GPA be too low for this program? Also, does anyone know how UChiago RA positions are (both at Booth and Harris School of Public Policy)?

How old is considered old for completing PhD? I was planning on working as an RA for 1-2 years (preferably 1, not sure yet) after undergrad, and assuming I go straight into PhD after RAing, I will be 31-32 by the time I get my degree. If I just go straight into PhD, I'll manage to finish when I'm 29-30. Is 32 considered old? pLEASE HELP. Thank you.

I got B's in two undergraduate-level econometrics courses, but got an A in the grad-level econometrics course. Does this compensate for my undergrad econometrics grades even for top programs (I got As in upper-level math courses including two real analysis courses, if this helps as well)? PLEASE HELP. Thanks :)

How helpful will be getting accepted to several undergraduate research conferences and presenting my own research be? (with several awards) I know it will not be significantly helpful when applying for PhD, but does it add any useful value?

Thanks for your reply! Actually, I've known him before and contacted him individually if I can "learn" under him through assisting with research, etc., and he said yes to me. We actually didn't discuss about whether I'll be paid or not, but I just assumed that I won't be since I did not necessarily go through the formal application process. Do you still think I should set this as backup? (I've asked the same question to those who posted before you did just to hear more.)

Hello, As one of my options after I graduate from my university, I was thinking about working as an RA for about a year under a professor or two professors. They are certainly very well known in the field and I personally know them, and they told me that they are willing to work with me upon me graduating, although I would not be paid. I will certainly apply to other RA positions (nber, etc.), but if I were to work with the former two, will it not be as impactful as I would be with working in the jobs posted in nber, siepr, etc.? That is, as long as I gain research experience along with great letters from them, would it matter at the end, right? (Assuming money is not an issue) (Sorry, this question may seem a bit weird and trivial but I just wanted to make sure:) ).

Thanks for your reply! If I were to take a fifth year and work as an RA after, I wouldn't have gone through the application "process" as others and would not be paid. I personally know the professors, and would be working with them for about nine months to a year. Due to proximity, money would not be a great issue - I'm mostly concerned about maximizing my chances. Do you think this would be a good option?

Hello, I'm currently a junior at a private university (top 20 econ department). I am studying econ and math (double major), and I am in a dilemma right now: My GPA isn't good and I am expecting it to be around 3.64 by the time I graduate (assuming I graduate in 4 years). I was wondering if it is better to do an extra year and try to raise my GPA (while keep working as an RA). I have some research experience with a professor at my university, and this upcoming summer, I plan on working either with the same professor or a well known macroeconomist. Specifically, the two options I was thinking of were: 1. Stay an extra year - take more math courses and take grad-level courses (both econ and math) while keep working as an RA for the professor and try to raise my GPA. Question: If I do a fifth year, should I go for a dual degree? Does dual degree matter at the end? (If I were to do a dual degree, one downside is that I would have to take more undergraduate econ electives, which I find to be not very necessary of my time.) Also, do the admissions committees view doing a fifth year negatively? 2. Work as an RA under a well known economist after senior year (assuming I graduate in 4 years) - I know two well-known economists (not in my university) who are willing to work with me. Would this be a better option for me? Historically, my school has placed students in at least top 20 except one, who was placed in a top 40. Please give me some advice! :) Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, I had a quick question about how the undergrad reputation along with under GPA plays a role in the admission process. I come from a top 20-25 private university in the US, and this person who graduated from my school was admitted to Penn State Econ PhD with a high 3.3 undergrad GPA (with research experience being just two UG thesis, which is relatively low compared to the GPAs I have seen so far on this forum with similar profile. Normally, how likely is that someone with 3.3 GPA gets into Penn State? I've been concerned with my GPA so far, and I believe that my final GPA upon graduation will be around high 3.6 or a 3.7, which is also low compared to GPAs of a lot of good applicants here. I don't know if my school is necessarily known as a "hard" school to the admission committees, but I was wondering if the reputation/difficulty of your school actually plays a role in the admissions process. (Note that my school does not have greek honor system like summa cum laude, etc., they just assign us a "university honor" if our final GPA is >3.5. Also, I've been in several honor societies even with not-so-great GPA in my school.) If anyone has any idea, could they share? Thanks. -
Thanks for your reply! I'm actually planning on taking some math grad courses in the future before graduating, do you think I could even have a chance for higher-ranked programs (top10) assuming I have great grades in those grad courses along with great letters and RA experiences?

Hi! Thank you so much for your input, really helped a lot :) I had several questions if you didn't mind answering,: 1. When during your undergrad did you apply for RA positions? And how many? 2. How will B's in econometric courses look? I have A's in advanced math courses and good research experience that involves coding, but got B's in econometrics courses and was wondering how these will hurt me. Thanks so much for your help! :)
