  1. anyone heard from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign agricultural economics phd program?
  2. I have not heard back as well. Hope it doesnot mean that it is an implicit rejection :( But I saw a post on Gradcafe stating s/he has been waitlisted. How do you figure out you are waitlisted??
  3. Congrats!!! Did you receive a funded offer? I have applied to UMass Amherst as well but didn't hear back from them yet. I think my application got delayed because I didn't realize I need to send in official transcript to them since all other schools only asks for unofficial ones during application and only requires official ones when you enroll. They notified me last week and I sent it out right away. :/
  4. Anyone heard back from Boston U? When do they usually send out their offers?
  5. Anyone here with offer from UMN Twin Cities Applied Economics program? I was wondering what they let you know regarding funding ...
  6. Faced similar situation and I got into a program this year which I have gotten in earlier with funding. I guess to get in again you would have to demonstrate that you have done something productive over the last few years and that your profile have improved from what it was when you previously applied. Hope I made sense there.
  7. Of course. First round offers mean they got picked first so would be offered funding first. Then if anyone declines, they send out second round of offers
  8. My two cents - If you are applying to econ programs, I think the additional 4 points on your quant score is more valuable than the 0.5 on the AWA. So use the scores from this year when applying to grad schools.
  9. Oh congrats man! If you don't mind sharing - did you get a personalized email from the department or checked the website for the offer? also when did you submit the application? I am just wondering why I didn't make the first cut, whether it was because I submitted my application right on the deadline or because my application was not strong enough for the first cut haha
  10. From gradcafe it seems UMD Ag and Resource Econ department have started sending out offers for their PhD program. Looks like I didn't make it to the first batch of offers. :( Anyone else applied to this program and have heard back?
  11. "Unfamiliarity of letter writers" - is this a big issue? Because most international applicants would have referees who may not be well-known ...
  12. Well let me briefly share my background first- I have 3 years research experience in an internationally reputed research institute, along with all A's in college-level algebra, calculus and analytical geometry and applied and theoretical math courses, and a masters in economics from the US with a decent gpa. I would say my lacking is that I have an average GRE score. Having said all that I don't know what is the deal with AU with all these early offers but I did apply to their PhD program before (a couple of years back) and got in with full funding and the works. Maybe in my case that played its part (??) and my application have only gotten better with the added 3 years of research experience that I have now. Another thing that might have helped my case is that there have been a couple of students in the program who are near to/have graduated from AU coming from the college I did my undergrad from.
  13. "Mostly Harmless Econometrics: An Empiricist's Companion" by Angrist and Pischke is definitely a good book to keep handy ...
  14. Ok so the application season is off to a good start for me. Received an email (JAN 09) from the Graduate Division at American University, D.C. with an admission offer for the Economics PhD program. No mention of funding though.
  15. Hey all! Applied to 8 program (US and UK combined), plus have 4 admission offers from last year (funding will be re-evaluated with current cohort of applicants). Good luck everyone!
  16. oh I am applying to Manchester because I am interested to work on issues surrounding poverty and Manchester has a history of research on poverty with quite a few professors who have worked on poverty in the same country that i am interested to work on. They had a Chronic Poverty Research Centre affiliated with the department.
  17. Thanks for your response to my questions. Yes I know I should mail someone in the department but since its holiday season I thought I would try my luck here in the forum. Regarding point 1, I think it varies in the UK, cause when my friend applied to a MSc in International Development program last year at UManchester, he had to upload recommendation letters himself onto the application site. But then again when I was filling out my application for LSE this year, they sent out emails to my referees to upload their letters onto the online system themselves. So I am a bit confused about how the system works in the UK and hence my post.
  18. Hey Lindsey! I am so sorry I somehow missed your reply :( Thank you so much for your thoughtful response to my questions. Yes regarding the recommendation process in the US you are absolutely right. I have applied to US schools before and have witnessed this process. But since this is my first time applying to schools in the UK, I am confused and hence my post. Regarding mentioning professors in the SoP, I am not doing that. I am just narrating my past experiences in academic and professional arena and explaining my research interests and so on. But i am not stating any names of professors in my SoP. But yes I am applying to departments where the department's objectives line with my research interests.
  19. Hi all! I am applying to the University of Manchester for their Economics doctoral program and have a few questions which I am listing below: 1. I am confused about how the reference process works. Like in the US, do professors receive an email and then post their comments through the link provided in that email or do I need to collect the letters from my professors and then upload it along with my other documents. I am asking because in the section where I am asked to upload supporting documents, i see that there are options to upload referee letters as well which is confusing me. Has anyone been through this process and can helpme out please? 2. How does funding work in the UK universities? Do i need to secure my own funding or would the department consider me for funding like in the US? 3. Is it absolutely necessary to lock in a supervisor/professor before I submit my application? I am asking because I see that programs that uni like Manchester and LSE are offering includes coursework ( 1 or 2 years depending on your background) much like the US and which would allow time for me to actually talk and discuss in person my research interests with professors before locking one in ( ... and not merely choosing one off a list on the website and trying my luck). Thank you. I would be extremely grateful for any input in this matter. :)
  20. Thank you sir for your reply. I have actually faced this dilemma last year when I applied to grad schools, where my "safety" school offered me funding way before all the other ones I applied to and set the deadline to accept on March 17. I asked for time but they extended it by only 5 more days. So you are saying to your knowledge there are no ramifications of accepting and then declining the offer for a better school? Thanks!
  21. Hi all, I want advice regarding a sticky situation I am in. Say for example, there are four universities I have applied to and are waiting to hear back from. Let's assume the university names are A B C and D, and their rankings and my preference for the universities are in that same order (D being the lowest ranked school). I get admission offer from all of them but they write that funding offers will be made separately in the coming months. Now, D is the first to offer me funding and set a deadline (say March 17) within which I have to accept. But here is the dilemma. The deadline is here but I am still waiting to hear back from A B and C. Maybe because they are good school and have not made their offers yet or maybe I was not in their first round of offers but I am still hopeful that I will get funding somewhere in A B or C. So my question is - is it ok to accept offer from a certain university and then going back on my word if I get offer from a better university? Are there any ramification - legal or otherwise - of such action? Any advice/suggestion/personal experience/knowledge regarding the aforementioned situation is most welcome. THANK YOU!
