1. Hey all, When I was waiting to hear back from schools in spring 2018 I made an R-shiny app using gradcafe data from the prior year to track when schools sent out decisions and what their admissions strategy was (all at once, staggered, first round and waitlist, etc.). I went ahead and updated my code to track the 2020 cycle. I'm not sure how representative 2020 will be since this will probably be a crazy cycle, but you may still find it helpful. Since we're not supposed to spam the thread with url's, you can access it via the homepage in my profile. Good luck to everyone applying this year. It can be a brutal process, but remember all you need is one!
2. Just so you know, U.S. schools have essentially all agreed that they are not allowed to require an answer from a candidate before April 15. If you google "council of graduate schools resolution regarding graduate scholars" you can read all about it. UC, NYU, UW and SMU have all agreed to this so they shouldn't be pressuring you into answering until then.
3. Does anyone know if Michigan sent out a waitlist? I assumed it was an implicit rejection but I'm seeing a wave of rejections on GC and I still haven't heard anything from them.
4. It can't hurt to be honest. If you won't accept their current offer but would if they improve the funding you can certainly tell them that and put the ball in their court. Who knows, maybe someone they are banking on will reject their funded offer and if they know you'll accept that will make you much more attractive. One thing you should consider is that most schools allow you to 'earn your way' into 2nd-5th year funding with performance. Check the schools website for something that says 'all students who maintain 3.XX GPA are guaranteed funding for subsequent years.' If you 1) can get through the first year unfunded and 2) are confident you can meet their standard, then you may consider going with the school you like better. Best of luck either way!
5. Has Rochester asked for an answer by a given date? They aren't supposed to require anything before April 15, so no reason not to wait for the other three and see what happens. It's not a terrible idea to reach out to Penn, UCLA and Minnesota and inquire as to your position on the waitlist. You may also consider letting your top choice know that you're in a position to immediately accept an offer if one is made.
6. Probably not. Based on last year, Davis did things on a rolling basis and had 4 acceptances in mid April. UCSD also had a last-minute acceptance come out but they are probably less likely to have several more at this point because they mostly came out in one cluster last year. Long story short, I wouldn't give up hope but the chances of getting in either if you haven't heard from them yet (I'm in the same boat with both schools) are much lower now than they were two weeks ago.
7. I've been waiting on UW as well. Only one random acceptance and one rejection on GC so far. Last year they had made almost all of their decisions in February so I have no idea what's going on there.
8. For the past three weeks, I've been getting irrationally mad at anyone who calls me who isn't from an adcom.
9. noface I hear you. I've only heard from 3 of 15, plus a handful of implicit rejections.
10. I believe that all schools will send an outright decision (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Implicit rejections don't mean the school is going to ignore the application, it's just that if they have sent out their first round of acceptances and you have not received one (particularly with schools like MIT who typically only have one round), then it's a safe assumption that you will eventually be rejected. As frustrating and anxiety-provoking as it is (I have three implicit rejections and one outright rejection so far), the schools are trying to maximize the quality of their incoming class just as we are trying to maximize the quality/fit of the school we end up at. Though I certainly like brobroski's idea of a matching system, adeline's post makes it seem like this is all a necessary evil.
11. I'm just going to keep making charts until I start hearing back from schools :)
12. FYI – I took the data I scraped from gradcafe and made an R-shiny app with it. Under the “School Info” tab, you can see when each school sent out acceptances/rejections last year, how many rounds there are, as well as the range of GPA/GRE scores they accepted (or at least the ones that were posted to gradcafe). I didn’t want to spam the thread with URL’s, but for anyone interested you can access it freely by clicking the homepage on my profile. I hope people find it as helpful as I have!
13. Greetings from a fellow anxiety-ridden applicant. I needed to channel my energy into something useful so I scraped all the posts from the 2017 econ PhD cycle on gradcafe and made this. Looks like the next two weeks will be big!
