  1. I've been looking around trying to find any papers/articles/forums on this topic, but haven't found much. How strongly would you say performance in the first year (course grades and prelims) is correlated with research quality and performance in later years? How strongly does first year predict success in the research phase of the PhD? I suspect there is at least some correlation - but are people at the very bottom of their class (in first year, who do pass prelims) more or less doomed to stay there? Are people at the very top 'very' likely to stay at the top of their class later on, or just 'slightly' more likely? How about your average Joes? Thoughts on this, especially from current/past faculty?
  2. Does anyone who got into UC davis know when the visit day is?
  3. Didn’t Berkeley extend their deadline a few days because of some issue with their portal? Could have pushed the whole timeline.
  4. Not sure about an official waitlist. From gc it looks like Davis historically sends out a first batch of acceptances and then trickles out the rest throughout March. At some point they send out a batch of rejections too. Looks like some people have gotten offers as late as April! Just wondering if anyone who’s gotten in on here is thinking of going elsewhere. SebastianECON I’m pulling for you to hear more good news! jjrousseau thank you and congrats! Edit: I can’t write
  5. Anyone who’s in at UCDavis deciding to decline?
  6. Saw some posts on gradcafe for ucdavis, are more offers expected or was that the bulk of it?
  7. Thank you all! How about difficulty for getting a TT into Top 40-60? Or into a smaller but prestigious liberal arts school? I’d assume a bit easier, but is there a big droppoff at some point?
  8. Hi all, I've very excited to have just been admitted to a top 30 (funding TBD, but I think I'll get something). I've also applied to 6 schools in the top 20 and I'm waiting to hear back from those, but it's pretty unlikely I'll be admitted, so let's assume those are all rejections. If my goal is to get a tenured track position in the same range (20-40), how difficult is it to do so after going to a top 30? Is it worth passing up on this and doing a master's in Econ to improve my application and try again in 2 years (at age 27) for a shot at top 10? I have a pretty strong background in math but only a minor in Econ from a low ranked state school, and I think the main things keeping me out of top 10/20 is lack of research experience and recommendation letters (which I think were great in content, but not from established economists). A research-track master's could improve both those. Am I foolish for even considering this? What if my T30 offer isn't funded? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.
  9. Hopes for Wisconsin are officially running on fumes! From gradcafe it looks like after the Feb 14-18 wave they usually send rejections, and then send waitlist notifications in early March with the occasional acceptance sprinkled in. Maybe I should hope I don't hear back this week :hmm: Side question - how does funding generally work for those who are waitlisted? Suppose someone is admitted in the first batch with full funding/stipend/TA etc, but decides to go elsewhere. Does the department then increase funding to someone else with partial funding admitted in the early batches of admits, or just pass the whole thing over to someone on the waitlist? I've seen some posts on gradcafe where people have been waitlisted and told they will get full funding IF they get off the list, but that just doesn't seem to make sense.
  10. Any other news on Wisconsin? Still holding out hope, but after the last 2 days, it's looking bleak I'll be accepted, let alone funded!
  11. Based on flynnigan9's homepage, it looks like end of this week/beginning of next week should be the first big wave?
  12. Ohio State PhD and Duke MA: Any word on funding? Neither acceptance email mentioned anything about funding (not even if/when a decision would be made on funding). I noticed some schools on gradcafe have already made funded offers, so just wondering if anyone knows whether these two programs make $$ decisions later on, or I simply got nothing :/ I did also receive an email from a professor the other day congratulating on the acceptance. Would it be appropriate to ask about funding now?
