  1. So they don't decide who is a star based of the qualifying exams/coursework but after we've chosen a supervisor and started the research?
  2. Thank you for coming back. I have a couple of questions: 1. How do you become a superstar? or get the faculty to perceive you as a superstar? 2. If we are too dumb. Any advice on how to fend for ourselves once we are in the research stage of the PhD?
  3. There's a UBC acceptance on GC. Is this real? Anyone know if UBC trickle or batch offers?
  4. If anyone is interested - I'm going to answer this myself using information from various sources. The minimum grades I've seen get quoted are 6.5-7. And approximately top 20% or less make it through to the second year. With intakes of close to 100 this may be difficult. I think this is evident with BGSE reporting they accepted 92 students last year - and looking at UPF JMC's there's consistently approximately 15 every year. It does seem like there's some self sorting process going on for students selecting normal vs advanced stream courses. So the competition for the limited 2nd year MRes places may reduce drastically. But that means the quality of the talent pool at the end is just higher. It seems like doing well is extremely difficult though not impossible. However, getting anything below 6.5 may not look good when applying elsewhere - keep in mind though, adcoms may recognize that BGSE is a difficult program to do well in. IMO - It's not the ideal option but it is a good option if you think you can come close to being the top. Since they receive a lot of applications, I think it's important to remember that the students being admitted are likely to also be of your quality or higher. So I think it's a very risky option also. By the sounds of it, the plus is the real possibility of getting a good job out at the end of the BGSE masters.
  5. Does anyone else think this whole process is just super super weird? Rejections from a whole bunch of uni's ranked below 20, thought I was doomed, then somehow got an offer from top 20.
  6. Why are people working on today? I thought President's day was a public holiday? - Genuine question
  7. Thanks for the info! Wish Canadian uni's showed the same love to us Commonwealth kids, we are part of the family too! Congrats Gronk17!
  8. on their website How many applications do you receive? For our PhD program, we receive around 70 applications from domestic students and 150 applications from international students. Each year, we admit around 15 domestic students and 2 international students.
  9. Other than UoT (who only accept 2 international), are other Canadian universities biased towards cancadians? I'm looking at UBC, Queen's, UWO and McGill.
  10. ^ Glad I'm not alone - I feel so crippled at the moment, my productivity level is 0 right now
  11. does anyone else feel like they are about to die from anxiety?
  12. Some posts on GC for penn state yesterday but none today. Does that mean first round is over for them?
  13. I have been admitted into the BGSE MEcon (10 months). What is required in order to get into the UPF MRes/PhD Economics? Specifically: 1. What are the grades required? How hard is it to achieve? 2. How many students get through? 3. Failing to meet the requirements, what are my other options? UAB? Any help to any of the questions will be super super helpful!
