  1. What are your other options (other electives) that you could take?
  2. What do you mean by a failing grade in phd real analysis? Also, how well did you do in other real analysis courses (such as in undergrad), and have you taken any econ courses?
  3. Is an Operations Research course the same as a Linear Programming course, at least at the undergraduate level? Some schools offer a course in operations research, others in linear programming, and I've seen some people use them interchangeably, so I was wondering. Thanks!
  4. Seconding tm_member and startz. If you are really concerned about your math grades, try listing which courses and the grades you've gotten in those courses and people here may be able to give you more accurate evaluations and comments on them (especially if it is the case that you got bad grades initially but managed to get better grades in advanced courses).
  5. Is there any way you could take more math classes? I've suffered a lot in math at first (as you can see from my previous threads), but I managed to pull up my grades in core, upper-level math courses, which I was told by others that such improvement could be a positive sign to admissions (although the ideal situation would be getting A/A-'s consistently in all courses). If possible, I would suggest taking more math courses and improving your math profile.
  6. thanks! it's relieving to hear that my math grades are good enough for RA positions (if that's what you meant, right?). Can I ask - what do you mean by the minimum bar?
  7. thanks for your thought! would you recommend that i take a different elective then?
  8. Hello all, I was wondering how a B in Differential Equations will be considered when applying for PhD/RA-Ship. I was close to getting an A but unfortunately ended up with a B+ (which led to a B since my school doesn't have +/- system.). Just as a reference, I've struggled a lot in the beginning but managed to get straight A's in the math courses that I have taken the past two semesters, including: Real Analysis I and II, Abstract Algebra, Proof-based Linear Algebra, Mathematical Probability, Topology, Linear Programming, and Combinatorics I took it about a year ago, and I was thinking about taking Measure Theory since it includes difference equations so I was wondering whether it will be a good sign if I get an A in this course despite the B in Diff Eq. Please let me know what your thoughts are!
  9. hi all, I'd like to get evaluations on my math grades as to how they are for applying for RA positions (positions on nber, siepr, etc.), and advice as to which electives to take. So far: Calculus I (A), Calculus II (A), Calculus III (A), Multivariate Analysis (A), Matrix Algebra (C, B), Linear Algebra (A), Abstract Algebra (A) ,Introductory Proof course ©, Discrete Math (B), Differential Equations (B), Linear Programming (W,A), Real Analysis I (A), Real Analysis II (A), Advanced Probability (A), Statistical Inference (A) Topology (A) How does this look? I was struggling a lot but I managed to pull my grades up in more advanced courses (got As the past two semesters). I was told by others at my school that I have solid research/programming experience, but will add onto here if needed. But for now, I'm just wondering if my math grades will give me a trouble in applying for the RA positions (my GPA is around 3.65 I believe). Also any advice as to which electives to take? (in need of 1 or 2 more) Thanks!
