1. (all info below is as of time of application) PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: State Flagship University (Top 150 US News) Undergrad GPA: 4.0 Type of Grad: Grad Certificate in Data Mining (1 yr program) Grad GPA: 4.0 GRE: 167Q/167V Math Courses: Business / Applied Calculus (A+), Calculus I (A+), Calculus II (A), Calculus III (A), Linear Algebra (A), Prob/Stats (thru business school) (A+) Econ Courses: Intro Micro (A+), Intro Macro (A+), Intermediate Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro (A+), Public Finance (A+), Urban Economics (A-), International Trade (A+), IO (A+), Environmental Econ (A+) Other Courses: Grad level courses in predictive modelling, data mining/analysis, programming Letters of Recommendation: 1 econ professor that I RA'ed for in grad school (excellent), 1 econ professor from undergrad (very good), 1 grad stats professor (sufficient, probably not amazing) Research Experience: 1 year of part-time RAing while in grad school Teaching Experience: nothing formal Work Experience: 1 year for non-profit (unrelated to econ); 1.5 yrs in management consulting (tangentially related to econ) Research Interests: Development; Health; Anti-Poverty Programs; Housing Markets SOP: Similar template used for all schools. Spent a lot of time on it, so (I hope) it turned out to be reasonably well-written. Structure was: Why Econ PhD => Why This Program => Why I'm Qualified. Interchanged bullet points re: research fit, faculty members, research centers / resources, locational preference, placement, etc. based on program. Other: I was late to the Econ PhD party. My most important math courses (Calc II, Calc III, LA) came after I graduated undergrad, while I was working full-time...I attached relevant undergrad research papers for writing samples...I applied fairly early (October), but did not hear any responses until mid-February. RESULTS: Acceptances: Georgia PhD (declined before funding decisions), Notre Dame PhD (full funding), Colorado-Boulder PhD (full funding), Duke MAE (1/2 tuition remission), Tufts MS (75% tuition remission), Wisconsin MS (no funding), Texas MA (1/2 tuition remission) Rejections: Duke PhD, Wisconsin PhD, Brown PhD, Illinois UC PhD, Boston U PhD, Boston College PhD, Texas PhD, Virginia PhD Attending: Notre Dame! Comments: Very excited to be heading to ND. Of all the schools I applied to, they seem to be my best research fit, in terms of faculty and research centers. On a related note: always go on the visit days, if at all possible...my Visit Day experiences were indispensable when it came time to make a final decision. What Would You Have Done Differently? My cycle shook out approximately as expected; there were not any major surprises. I guess that is something of an endorsement of this forum, since I did use data / info from here to help refine my application list (in conjunction with more specific advice from faculty mentors, of course). I had a weird / noisy profile, given my lack of undergrad math and my unconventional work history, so I was glad to get into several Top 60 programs with funding. If I was fresh out of UG, I may have considered Duke's MAE offer more seriously, in the hopes of reapplying to T20 programs down the line. As it was, I probably could have stood to apply to a few more PhD programs in the 25-40 range, and a few less Master's programs. But overall I'm very pleased with my results, and can't wait to get started in the fall. In terms of what I would do differently if I could go back in time to improve my actual profile: all the things other posters will say. Take more math in UG, do more RA work, build closer relationships with faculty while in UG, try to take grad level econ courses, etc etc.
2. I applied this cycle, and 13/14 programs I applied to accepted fall transcript updates, Brown being the lone exception. My experience also suggests that ad comms really do consider fall grades (at least in marginal cases), since I ended up being accepted by several schools which almost certainly would have disqualified me based on my transcript without the fall grades. I even was able to submit midterm grades to several schools in March, although it’s less clear if/how that impacted my chances.
3. Emailed with the Program coordinator at Colorado-Boulder today - they will have decisions out on Thursday. So if you’re like me and they are your last result, give yourself a break from refreshing GC until then!
4. Per the Boston College Graduate Coordinator: They have already sent "admission offers and notified those on the waitlist. If you have not received an e-mail from the Economics admissions committee, you will not be offered admission." Rejection hurts, but somehow not as bad as the feeling of imminent rejection! Glad to know my status.
5. Question to our Hive Mind: Do we expect to see more Accepts from Boston College? There were a few Accepts last week (too few to seem exhaustive?), and a couple WL results this week. Hard to figure what to make of their process so far.
6. Found this graph in a GC thread from user seems_fair, and wanted to share. Based on past data, it looks like today is more or less the inflection point for Acceptances and Rejections.(seems_fair discusses some of the limitations and data cleaning steps in the thread itself) The good news is that *there are still plenty of Acceptances to go out* between now and the end, and we'll be on the steep part of the curve for at least another week or two. Keep the faith - we're getting there! Hope everyone gets a result they can feel great about between now and 4/15.
7. Sure thing, and thanks! Based on her email, it seems fair to expect Ph.D. decisions from UT to come out in the near future. Hoping it's next week!
8. If you're referring to UT-Austin (not Toronto!)...this was me, for their MA program. But, I applied to both their MA and Ph.D. programs, so I contacted the MA Coordinator to check on the status of my Ph.D. app after declining the MA offer. She informed me that the Ph.D. committee was still finalizing decisions.
9. Based on previous years, I actually think we can expect UIUC to announce acceptances sometime between now and next weekend. Here are some past dates for UIUC's first batch of acceptances, based on GC: 2018: 2/23 2017: 2/17 2016: 2/22
10. Hi all! I have a noisy/unconventional profile, so I'm hoping to receive some thoughtful responses to help narrow down my application list. I plan to apply for Fall 2019 to test the waters, but understand that my profile will likely benefit from another year of math classes / that I may need to reapply for 2020. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 50ish State Flagship University Undergrad GPA (Economics major, History minor): 4.0 Type of Grad: Grad Certificate in Data Mining (1 year program, same as undergrad) Grad GPA: 4.0 GRE: 167Q/167V 4.5 AW (retaking in Nov. to hopefully improve Q) Math/Stats Courses: - Undergrad: (all A+) Calculus w/ Applications, Calculus I, Statistics - Grad: (all As): Statistical Data Mgmt I and II, Data Mining I & II - Non degree seeking: (taken after grad at a different State U, while working full-time): Calc II (A), Linear Algebra (A), Calc III (in progress, Fall 2018, likely will not wait for grade to apply), may take Differential Eq. and/or Real Analysis in Spring 2019 depending on how cycle goes. Econ Courses: (All A+s unless otherwise specified): Intro Micro, Intro Macro, Intermediate Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro, Public Finance, Urban Economics (A-), International Trade, Industrial Org, Environmental Econ Other Academic Stuff: skilled with predictive modelling and data mining/analysis, somewhat skilled with programming and querying Letters of Recommendation: 1 econ professor that I RA'ed for in grad school (will be excellent), 1 econ professor from undergrad (will be very good), 1 grad stats professor (should be strong). Research Experience: 1 year of graduate-level, part-time RAing, in risk/insurance. Will end up as co-author on forthcoming paper(s). Teaching Experience: nothing formal Work Experience: 1 year for non-profit (unrelated to econ); 1 year in high-level public sector consulting (tangentially related to econ) Research Interests: Housing markets; International development; Behavioral; RCTs Concerns: - My grad program was initially supposed to be a 2-year Applied Econ program, but I left after 1 year since I determined at the time that I only wanted the Data Mining certificate (wanted to explore, travel, work in the real world, etc.) - No econometrics - Probably no grade for Calc III when I apply, and nothing past LA (no RA, no Diff Eq yet) - Undergrad institution rank - Perception of math grades, which came later in life from non degree seeking courses - Not a ton of research Schools I'm looking at: Wisconsin, Michigan, Duke, Brown, Ohio State, Boston College, Boston University, Texas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgetown, UVa, Brown, Iowa, Illinois Thank you!
