  1. I can confirm that at least a couple of them moved
  2. Just curious. I'm on some HRM waitlists myself, but there doesn't seem to have been much movement on Gradcafe. Is today the big day usually?
  3. NSF results are out. Did anyone else apply?
  4. It is important to expand your academic career beyond your ugrad, but you can also expand your network by just attending conferences anyways. If you felt the most comfortable at Yale, I'd say go to Yale. At this level you have excellent choices, so it's really a matter of taste and comfort, which you appear to have at Yale.
  5. I did get a response ®, I was just curious as to how few people they actually ended up accepting.
  6. There were fewer than 10 Berkeley acceptances on GradCace. Is that sus to anyone?
  7. Are Harvards fake? Would believe some phone calls (also some of the profiles are pretty stacked)
  8. Really lost as to how to outline my SOP. How much should I talk about courses, research, etc. if they're already on my CV? How much of a "personal story," if at all, should I be telling? Name dropping specific faculty I'd like to work with?
  9. There are plenty of resources out there on applying for the NSF in other fields (sample proposals and stuff), but haven't found many in Economics. Do any of the community members here have suggestions for applying for the fellowship, particularly the personal statement piece of the app? One of the things I've been told to emphasize is the 'Broader Impacts' of the project that go beyond the field of economics itself and into interaction with people in everyday life (so something beyond "this model has implications for policy"). If I'm writing a proposal where I present a specific model with a specific application, how would I write about something like that?
  10. Simple question: if I am currently an undergrad at University X, and I'm applying to the PhD program at University X, are my chances better or worse for getting into University X? Does this change depending on how highly ranked University X is, for both undergrad and grad? One obvious advantage or disadvantage could be that the adcom may consist of Profs who know me or know my letter writers.
  11. Thanks for the feedback. Couple questions: The first is hypothetical: what happens if I take Grad Micro Pass or Fail? What if I take it for a grade, but get a B+? Is "passing" better than getting a B+? The second: I have two vastly different main research interests, one in Macro and the other in Game Theory/conflict studies. I've done formal research and coursework in one field, but don't have much to show on paper for the other (although my thesis intersects with this topic). Is it okay to mention a dual interest in two vastly different types of economics in my SOP? Should I try to communicate that interest to my letter writers? I also have the potential to get a fourth rec from an economics professor who isn't well known but is my advisor and knows me in and out. Would this be a worthy addition to my application, or do more recs make things more complicated. Thanks for your help, and hopefully the answers to these questions can help other lurkers out there.
  12. You know the drill. I'll emphasize my worse grades are concentrated in my first and second year. Type of Undergrad: 4th Year at a Top 5/10 US Uni Undergrad GPA: Economics and Math, 3.82 GRE: 169 Q, 163 V, 6 AWA Math Courses First Year- Honors Multi (A), Honors Lin Alg (A-), DiffEq (A-) Second Year- Analysis (A-/A), Probability (A), Advanced Econometrics (A/B+) (emphasis that this was my second year) Third Year- Honors Topology (A-), Graduate Seminar (A), Modern Algebra (A-) Fourth Year- Probably something fun Economics Courses First Year- Intro Micro (B+), Intermediate Micro (B+) (not good) Second Year- Intermediate Macro (A), Honors Game Theory (A), Advanced Game Theory (A) Third Year- Advanced Macro (A), five field courses (all As) Fourth Year- Registered for another field course, Grad Micro Research and Work Have been working with a well known economist for 1.5 years, will be two once I finish up my fourth year TAed four or five times for math department LORs One from the well known professor I work with Two from two other well known professor who know me well Publications Co-authorship on two or three papers with my Professor SOP Not sure what to write honestly, my interests are varied. Schools I'll apply to Probably Top 10s, but do I have a chance? Some grades could be a bit better
