191. The following is a letter from a professor at Xanadu College to the college's president. "The development of an extensive computer-based long-distance learning program will enhance the reputation of Xanadu College. This program would allow more students to enroll in our courses, thereby increasing our income from student tuition. Traditional courses could easily be adapted for distance learners, as was shown by the adaptation of two traditional courses for our distance learning trial project last year. Also, by using computer programs and taped lectures, faculty will have fewer classroom obligations and more time to engage in extensive research, thereby enhancing the reputation of Xanadu." A good course can certainly improve the reputation of a college if the college provides a quality education to the students enrolled. But, the assumption of the author that by developing an extensive computer-based-long distance learning program will improve the reputation of Xanadu college is not at all practical. The second assumption which weakens the topic is adaptation of traditional courses which is based on the success of the trial project last year. Firstly, the author's first assumption is not based on any facts. A college cannot enhance its reputation just by developing a new distance learning course. The reputation of a college consists of the quality of teaching, result oriented education, regular interaction with students etc. A college cannot improve its reputation by developing more and more courses. The reputation of the college depends on how the courses offered are handled by the college, it depends on the quality of the education provided. Here the author seems to be more concerned about the income of the college rather than the quality of education provided to the students. Again a college cant improve its reputation by enrolling more numbers of students. It could be possible that the best colleges may have less number of students as compared to other colleges. And then also they are reputed ones just because the quality of the education they provide. Secondly, the author is assuming that the adaptation of the distance learning project for traditional courses previous year shows that the college can adapt more traditional courses, which is ludicrous. First and foremost there are no data provided based on which it can be said that more and more traditional courses can be adapted in the present year too. There is no information whether the traditional courses adapted previous year were a success or a failure.And its not necessary that the students will be interested in traditional courses only for the computer based distance learning course. Hereby, to enhance the reputation of a college what matters is the quality of education and not the quantity of students. Hi friends, Please give comments on my essay and let me know my mistakes so that i can improve my skills. This is my very first attempt for the argument essay. And how much will score on this essay. 212.------------------------------------- The following appeared in a memorandum from the new president of the Patriot car manufacturing company. "In the past, the body styles of Patriot cars have been old-fashioned, and our cars have not sold as well as have our competitors' cars. But now, since many regions in this country report rapid increases in the numbers of newly licensed drivers, we should be able to increase our share of the market by selling cars to this growing population. Thus, we should discontinue our oldest models and concentrate instead on manufacturing sporty cars. We can also improve the success of our marketing campaigns by switching our advertising to the Youth Advertising agency, which has successfully promoted the country's leading soft drink." This argument sounds convincing, but it is based on some assumptions. First, increase in the market share by selling cars to the newly licensed drivers. Second, stop manufacturing oldest models and concentrate in manufacturing sporty cars. Last, improvement in the success of marketing campaigns by switching the advertising to the Youth Advertising agency, which has successfully promoted the country's leading soft drink. Let us analyse these assumptions in detail. There are no second thoughts for the fact that if more and more people will get driver's license, there are more chances for a vehicle company to have a good sale. But, this assumption would be wrong that the Patriot cars can sell most of their cars to the newly licensed drivers. There is no guarantee that the driver will come to Patriot cars only, it depends totally on the driver which car he/she chooses. The company cant force anybody to buy their cars only. Manufacturing of sporty cars can be profitable to the company but they cant survive in the market by manufacturing sporty cars only. Its not necessary that their oldest model will not get any response from the market. Instead of stop manufacturing oldest models what they can do is they can improve the body a bit, then they can improve the efficiency of the engine. Furthermore, its not necessary that everybody will like sporty cars only, there are people who are interested in old models, so here the company can work it out. The author's assumption to stop manufacturing old models and start making sporty cars is based on the report that says there is a rapid increase in the number of newly licensed drivers in some regions of the country, but here the author is just concentrating on the new drivers only. It could be possible that changing the advertising agency can be fruitful for the company's market campaign. But its ridiculous if this change is based on the assumption that Youth Advertising agency successfully promoted the country's leading soft drink so it can also promote cars for Patriot cars. There is no guarantee that if the last campaign of the advertising agency was successful then Patriot cars will also have a effective marketing campaign. The product is different, the strategy of the advertising agency will be different then how can the author say that it can be fruitful for Patriot cars too. Patriot cars can improve itself by improving the quality of the cars, by improving the efficiency of the cars, by a good marketing strategy, they can have a survey so that they can have a proper idea what is the need of the market. They should not make a plan on the basis of assumptions.

I mean i will find it on University site only or there is any other site which can be helpful for me. And about me my aim is to give GRE , so i would need your help and other TM member's help too. Sri, You guessed right that I have a lot of time before my GRE. Actually my GRE date was 20th December 2002 but due to some problems I have to reschedule it. So why not use that time in preparing for Essay part...right? I checked out the sites you told me. I knew about msn but cnn is too good. Thanks for your advice. I will need that everytime. -Karan

Hi AmigoRo, Thanks alot for your analysis of the essay. I know Im too bad at this but Im trying to improve myself. Im reading the previous posted essays so that I can get an idea how to get over it. But please can you let me know that what should be the ideal size of the essay. From the essays I read now I know that Examples should be there. And about periods after fullstop it was typing mistake, but then also I have to take care of it. Thanks again for your comments. -Karan

Erin nowadays I read all the essays posted before, but is there any other way to improve my skills. I got comments from moderators and noted their points too. I can give as much time as I want for the essays. But please let me know about besides reading previous essays how can I improve myself. But frankly speaking I find myself nowhere in essay writing. After reading your essay I came to know that I have to work allot to improve my essay part.I know that my essay is not good at all. But I would like to look at it and advice what all things should I do to improve myself, as this is my very first attempt to write an essay. "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching to as they can by reading books." According to my view its wrong to say that in the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was because both the things have its own importance. If we say that watching television can increase our knowledge more than books then we are underestimating the importance of books. The information that we can get from books can be rarely found on television programs. Secondly, if we take a practical view at this, we will notice that, people who watch television get bored very easily by watching a single program and as a result they change channels and search for a program which is more interesting than the later. While this is not the case with books. When a person is reading a book with every single line he is reading he is gaining something.And if by chance he gets bored by reading that book then he/she can continue reading from that page afterwards, which we cant do with televisions. Therefore I would conclude by saying that both books and television have their respective importance.We cant say that televisions took the place of books.Books are always a better source of information.

This is my very first attempt for a GRE Essay. I didnt even referred to any material before for Essays.So please let me know my mistakes and how can i improve myself. "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable." If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable. To some extent its true but according to my point of view this topic is far too vague.As for every thing there is a positive and negative aspect but here negative aspect is more than the positive one.And obviously it depends on individual to individual. Firstly, how can we say that if a goal is worthy we can achieve it by any means possible. A very general example can be taken like, if a person has a goal to become a millionaire then it doesnt mean that he can attain his goal by any means.He cant rob a bank and say that his goal is now achieved and its all justifiable. Well it depends on the individual how he/she takes it. For example, if the goal for an individual is to study in the best Universities and if he/she works very hard to get through it and studies day and night without any concern what people say, then this can be called justifiable. So, we see here that we cant say every thing done to achieve a goal is justifiable.It depends on the individual whether he/she takes the positive side or the negative side. Therefore I would conclude by saying that as a whole we cant say that a worthy goal can be achieved by any means, as it depends on the person.
