I just applied this year's cycle - got into UofT. I think you would be competitive for the top 4 MA programs in Canada (uoft, ubc, queens, western). Your profile is similar to mine (I have a low CGPA but good last 20). I also worked as an RA for one year at a the Bank of Canada (central bank).

Without revealing too much about myself; Type of Undergrad: BA Hons. Econ from average program in Canada (3.7 BMath Hons. Stats from Top 2 program in Canada (2.5> GPA) GRE: 167 Q Letters of Recommendation: Two undergraduate professors from Econ program Research Experience: 1 year RA at central bank Teaching Experience: 8 months TA for 3rd year econometrics Research Interests: Econometric Theory, Time Series Econometrics, Macroeconomic Modelling RESULTS: Acceptances: 3 (2 Top 3 programs in Canada, 1 backup school) Pending: 1 (US School in Top 25) Rejections: 4 (3 US in Top 20, 1 Top 2 program in Canada) Attending: Top 2 program in Canada To do for next year: Aimed too high, probably will apply to greater range of US schools (Top 35) Will upgrade GRE score

I responded to your other post comparing SFU and UWaterloo, so have a look at that if you're really set on those two. But honestly speaking, I am very surprised that you are thinking of those two schools over UBC/UofT. For Canadian econ programs its pretty much agreed upon that UBC and UofT are the top 2 programs in the country (by a large margin)... followed by Queens and Western. These schools round up what we refer to as the "Big 4". Outside the big 4 the programs are not as reputable (especially internationally). Co-op is great, but I personally believe that the reputation of UofT/UBC would still put you in a better position foJr industry jobs after your masters. IMO, you're better off doing the MA and then finding your own internship afterwards. Again this is my opinion, but if you're forking out a ton of money to study in Canada, IMO it is not worth giving up the UofT/UBC opportunity for SFU or Waterloo

Waterloo by far has the best co-op program in Canada. Their Econ program is not as strong however, and quite frankly if you go there you will be limiting your chances at a top PhD program in the future. However, if you want to work in the industry, the co-op program can land you some great positions and Waterloo's program is more applied in nature anyway, so you can develop a really marketable skillset while getting great work experience. I don't know much about SFU's co-op, but it definitely wouldn't be as good as Waterloo's. On the bright side, it is one of the higher ranked Econ programs in Canada (IMO, it is just outside the top 5). You could still get a job via co-op, but you wouldn't close the door on PhD opportunities. The cost of living is also a factor... SFU you live in Vancouver which is one of the two most expensive cities in Canada (the other being Toronto). At Waterloo, you live in Waterloo, and the rent there is far cheaper (though be careful renting from the larger rental companies because they are hella shady). For work permits you would need a co-op one, but Waterloo will get you set up easily. Almost all the programs at Waterloo offer co-op so its a regular thing for international students to obtain the permit. Source: I went to Waterloo for undergrad

im going to UofT I was considering queens, but I got an opportunity for extra funding at UofT (I'll know if I get it on April 1st), but I couldn't get an extension till then from Queens

Will be accepting my UofT MA offer tomorrow, and declining Queens. Glad that this year is over.... really long cycle for me since I also applied to US schools. Still haven't heard from michigan, but I'm happy to stay in Canada for my masters. Good luck to the rest of you, and see you guys next year (if you're doing masters this year)!

Are UBC first round offers done yet? I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't included in it (though I wasn't really planning on going cause it was too far for me). I know people who got offers but no word on funding, which I assume would only be worse for later round acceptances anyway. I'm not sure if I should ask Queens for an extension just to see if I get UBC... and Toronto hasn't responded yet either
