  1. This profile looks almost exactly like mine from last year. First, don't worry about your GRE scores. Verbal doesn't matter at all unless you are an international student, and 168 is more than high enough for quant. For real analysis, I wouldn't worry about it. I actually didn't even have a grade next to it while applying since I took it this last semester. The A in real analysis II more than makes up for it. Being at a fairly unknown University only hurts you for the top 10, but not after that. My university was ranked about the same as yours. Finally, as far as range goes, I would apply to a couple top 10 as long shots, a few top 20's as reach schools, a few top 30's as realistic schools, and one or two top 50's as backups. As a comparison, your profile is slightly stronger than mine was, and I got into Rochester, UNC, Cornell AEM (where I'm going), UC Irvine, and Oregon. Where ever you go, you should have full funding, and don't take anything less.
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 70 U.S. state school Graduated in 3 years with stats and econ with a minor in math Undergrad GPA: 3.94 Type of Grad:NA Grad GPA:NA GRE: Q: 166, V: 152, W: 4.0 Math Courses: All A's: up through linear algebra and real analysis (taking this fall, no grade yet) Econ Courses: All A's: math econ, intermediates, econometrics, history of econ thought Other Courses: A lot of stats (with 1 b and 1 b+). Such as time series, theory courses, regression stuff, etc... Letters of Recommendation: 2 econ profs, 1 stats prof. Nobody recognizable. Research Experience: McNair Scholar for a summer Teaching Experience: TA for College Algebra Research Interests: Applied Micro, Labor, Metrics, IO SOP: Nothing special Other: 1st gen, low income RESULTS: Acceptances: Cornell AEM ($$$.5), Rochester ($$), UNC ($$), UC Irvine ($$$), Oregon($$) Waitlists: N/A Rejections: All of the top 20, plus JHU Pending: N/A Attending: Cornell AEM Comments: I shot too high with most of the schools, but was smart enough to have good backups. Got lucky getting into Rochester and Cornell. Very happy with Cornell, would have still been happy with with Irvine or UNC. All in all, I'm extremely happy with where I'm at. Only 20 years old making over 35k going to school at Cornell. What would you have done differently? Would have taken Analysis before applying so I could have a grade next to it. Also would have tried to do more research in undergrad. Maybe would have applies to more top 30 schools instead of all the top 20, but I chose good ones to apply to so I got a little lucky If you're US, don't do a masters first, it's useless.
  3. Yup, didn't get it. Wasn't expecting to as my proposal wasn't anything great.
  4. I went on a visit there, wasn't a fan. But I'm interested in applied micro and IO, not macro. I think I will be choosing UC Irvine instead.
  5. Currently choosing between UCI and UNC. The funding at UCI is a solid amount more and I don't have to teach for a couple of years. They also have subsidized housing which makes it easier to live there. UNC's offer isn't as good but includes fellowships in the summer. I'm interested in labor and empirical IO. Not sure which one I value over the other one yet. Also, I am interested in an industry job, so rankings are not as important. I'm pretty split down the middle currently, anyone have any opinions?
  6. Does it mean anything if I haven't heard anything from UCLA?
  7. 1 thing that might be useful to add is that they said they think I have the drive and motivation to get through it, and gave me stuff in the summer too. Next week is the visitation day, which conveniently falls over spring break for me. Should I even go at this point? I want to say yes, since I think there is a lot of information I need and a lot of questions to ask.
  8. I have 3 options: UNC-Chapel Hill ($), IC Irvine ($$), and Rochester ($). I visited Irvine and loved it. Also as a note, I am very open to an industry position rather than academia in the future, might even prefer it. Interests are applied micro, metrics, and labor. So, apart from choosing a school, I am worried I will not make it at Rochester, which seems like the obvious choice. I am a 3rd-year undergrad majoring in statistics and economics, with a minor in math (up to real analysis and diffeqs). The admissions person warned me that many Americans who come straight from their undergrad do not make it, and that worries me. Does anyone have any advice on what to do and whether or not I would make it? Also, with not being deadset on academia, I am not sure how much rankings truly matter.
  9. I just got a 20k offer at Rochester. Just visited Irvine and loved it. Thought I was only going to have to decide between that and UNC. Now I guess I have to throw Rochester into that mix. Not a fantastic offer, but a higher rated school.
  10. Nothing from UCSD, but still hope for the waitlist! And if not that, we still have UCLA and UCB to go. If not those, looks like I'm choosing between UC Irvine and UNC!
  11. I did a mix, I tried to look at the contact the recommended on their website or application portal.
  12. I just emailed all of my implicit rejections (5 of them). Let's see what happens.
  13. Looks like Chicago rejections are coming out. Hoping not to get an email. Looks like they have already sent out a waitlist, though. So I guess we'll have to wait and see.
  14. Same boat as you on Hopkins. I emailed last Wednesday and they said I'd hear from them by the end of that week. Not sure what it means that it didn't happen. Hoping they get in touch soon.
