  1. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Canadian business school (BBA Econ/Math) Undergrad GPA: 3.85/4 Type of Grad: Same as undergrad, MA Econ Grad GPA: 3.95/4 GRE: 167Q/165V/4.5 Math Courses: Probability (A), Statistics (A), Operations Research (A), Linear Algebra (A), Multivariate calculus (A), Topology (A-), Real Analysis (A), Stochastic Processes (A-), Differential equations(A-) Econ Courses: Intermediate micro (A), Intermediate macro (A), Introduction to Econometrics (A) Grad Econ Courses: IO (A), Time Series Econometrics (A-), International Macro (A), Monetary Macro (A), Applied Econometrics (A), Micro (A) Other Courses: Bunch of finance classes Letters of Recommendation: Chair of Econ department (full prof, got A in his graduate class), Thesis advisor (Associate professor, was his TA for 1 year) , Top 10 Full prof for whom I've been a RA. Research Experience: 1 year RA with Econ prof, 6 months undergrad RA with Statistics prof, masters thesis. Teaching Experience: 3 years TA (Probability, Statistics, Operations Research, Linear Algebra, Intermediate Macro, Graduate Applied econometrics). Research Interests: Macro, labor, international SOP: Standard, usually not customized, except for a few. Other: RESULTS: Acceptances: Penn($$$), Columbia(through waitlit - $$$$), Minnesota($$), Maryland($$), Toronto($$$$), UBC($$$), UW Madison($$), Cornell($$$), Penn State($$$) Waitlists: Columbia (accepted), Brown (declined), Duke(declined), Wharton(declined) Rejections: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Berkeley, Chicago, NYU, Northwestern, Michigan, Boston U Pending: CMU Tepper Attending: Columbia! Comments: Very random, but this was expected. Very happy with the results. What would you have done differently? Contact profs about letters of recommendation earlier, I was a bit late on that. Maybe candidate to fewer schools (25 might be too much, I think 15 is the right number).
  2. Institution: Columbia Program: Economics (PhD) Decision: Accepted (from waitlist) Funding: $$$$ Date: March 2 Notified through: Email Comments: Will likely attend. Institution: UPenn Program: Economics (PhD) Decision: Accepted Funding: 0 Date: March 6 Notified through: Email Comments: Not even sure if they give tuition waiver. Might have considered it if they gave funding.
  3. I was told by a prof that there is an advantage to tell "I have x, y, z acceptance, I would most probably accept your offer if you give me".
  4. Really no clue, I don't think so. I have 3 wl, only one invited me to attend visitation day.
  5. I had an e-mail from Columbia inviting me to their visitation day next month, but I am on the waitlit. Anybody else on the waitlist had a similar e-mail? Is it worth it to go even without being admitted (if they end up accepting me I will very likely attend).
  6. Was just waitlisted to Brown and the e-mail says : "If you are still interested in being admitted to Brown, please respond to this email within the next 7 days. It would be very helpful if you can provide a list of other PhD programs to which you are currently admitted or for which you are waitlisted. " I feel like it is not necessarily a good idea to give such informations. What do they do with it ?
  7. Got an offer too, will decline.
  8. Received it at 9:56 AM EST.

  10. Not me, applied to PhD Econ, was waitlisted.
  11. I know people who got accepted to the Master's without a Bsc in economics/applied math (things like BBA with concentration in econ or BA in political science +econ : so basically had done 5 economics classes + real analysis). I think if you take Real Analysis + Calculus III it could be okay. Can't you take additionnal intermediate econ classes next semester too?
  12. I do not know enough about US Master's so I will only speak about the european ones I know. I think such a profile would have very decent chances of getting into Sciences Po Masters (either Economics or International Economic Policy) with GRE 167-168. Like the previous poster, I would say you should try TSE too. From what I know, your profile is not unreasonable for Bocconi. Also from what I know, Canadian universities have quotas of local students to admit so they usually give few spots to international students, so I'm not sure it's worth the shot.
  13. Institution: University of Minnesota Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: $$ Date: 2/8/2020 Notified through: Email
  14. I was the poster on GC today. E-mail received this morning.
  15. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BBA, major in Economics and Mathematics, relatively good business school, had strong placements in the last two/three years (top 20) Undergrad GPA: 3.84/4 Type of Grad: Msc Economics, same school Grad GPA: 3.86/4 GRE: 167Q, 165V, 4.5 Math Courses (all undergrad): Statistics I (A+), Statistics II (A+), Mathematical modelling (A+), Stochastic calculus (A-), Real Analysis (A-), Linear algebra (A+), Topology (A-) Undergrad econ courses: Intro Macroeconomics (A+), Intro Microeconomics (A+), Intermediate Macro (A+), Intermediate Micro (A+), Econometrics (A+). Grad econ courses: Advanced micro (A), Monetary Macro (A), Time Series Econometrics (B+), Industrial Organization (A), Advanced Econometrics (A) Other Courses: Bunch of finance class, not relevant Letters of Recommendation: Professor for whom I've been a RA, from top 15 US econ dep. Thesis advisor, will be pretty strong. Faculty director, will be pretty strong too. Research Experience: 1 year RA in Energy economics at my school (although with the department of statistics), 1 year RA at a top 15 US university in econ. Teaching Experience: 3 years TA (undergrad statistics/undergrad maths/undergrad intermediate macro/grad advanced macro), 1 semester instructor having my own class (undergrad statistics) Research Interests: Monetary economics, International Trade, International macro SOP: Other: Concerns: My B+ in a grad class is a concern, even though the average is B- (which is unusual for a master's class), especially with it being in time series, which is directly within my research interests. I am wonderring if I should retake that class, even though it won't appear in my GPA at the time of candidating. If I retake it and state it in my SOP, will it be considered? Coding skills: R, Python, Stata, LaTex. Applying to : that's a bit my question here. What should I aim for with a profile like that? Top 30? Top 20?
