  1. I'll go ahead and guess that person got rejected at every place they applied to. Just ignore, as we know by now, even Urch is not troll-free.
  2. Wow, people, could you BE any more inappropriate? I believe economics (as a body of knowledge, not so much as a profession) is relatively race and gender-neutral, would prefer to keep it as such, and don't see why it should become biased towards one particular gender (no feminist physics or chemistry out there yet, after all). However, I also believe if you don't reconsider your remarks or at least don't learn to keep them to yourselves, you have a bright future as econjobrumors trolls. Also, insulting a person in a "chitchat" doesn't make it okay, does it? It's not like insults have to be part of official correspondence to be wrong.
  3. Haven't heard back from Duke either, but there are plenty of acceptances on the GC.
  4. Thank you! Yes, it is. Partly because they don't do or teach macro :D
  5. Thank you! A generic email to check the website.
  6. Just got an offer from Caltech. I'm so happy I teared up.
  7. Kazakh, I think it depends on your program. For example, Penn State pays monthly, 1/5 of the semester stipend at the end of each month, beginning in August. PSU doesn't have a math camp though; schools that do might pay earlier but I have no info on that.
  8. Honestly, I don't think it matters at all unless you post some prof's name and email and encourage people to contact her/him with questions. GRE is not everything, but some schools use standardized test scores such as GRE and TOEFL as a filter, so you need to be above some threshold to get the adcom to even look at your application. Now, this is what I heard from one econ professor who was on the adcom at one school, so it doesn't apply to every school I am sure, but she said standardized test scores and math grades mattered even more for international applicants. She explained that international students have to have an edge in math because they are more likely to struggle with communication in English and adjustment to a foreign environment. (Other, more jaded people say it's because LORs from international schools lack credibility.)
  9. I hope you hear from them earlier or even get a better offer from elsewhere. As plexus said before, at schools of Penn State's ranking, those accepted in the first round and those who will be attending the program next fall are not necessarily the same people. Since you are already admitted, I believe a funding offer from Penn State will come your way once other schools start announcing their results.
  10. My offer is valid until April 15. I thought that was a rule for the U.S. grad schools, wasn't it? Edit: It is called April 15 Resolution. It was adopted by the Council of Graduate Schools in the U.S. to prevent exploding offers and market unraveling. Forcing a student to respond to a funded offer before April 15 violates the Resolution. Text: April 15 Resolution | Council of Graduate Schools
  11. Some people who have received an acceptance/rejection might not want to report the result first on the GC for the fear of disclosing too much information / being identified, etc. (There is a first-mover disadvantage, so to say.) So spammers might post their false results on the GC in order to induce others to post their true results or to call/email the program and get more information. There also are some purely mean people who like to mess around with stressed and anxious PhD applicants. :) I think it's better to take some results on the GC with a grain of salt, especially, if they are not followed by other reports. MIT entries were clearly a joke though, maybe unfunny but definitely not ill-meant.
  12. I believe it is still too early to say. I have no insider information, so can't say for sure but I believe they haven't released all of their offers yet. Also, you can expect some movement once offers from other schools are released and some previously admitted students decline their offers. It seems unlikely those schools have only one round of admissions.
  13. What startz said. I looked through the old threads on this forum once before, and this seems to me the piece of advice everyone agrees on. I plan to visit my family and maybe travel a little bit before going to the U.S. in early August. That is, if I accept my offer from PSU, since they don't have a math camp. Otherwise, no time for traveling really. :) A set of essential skills for a graduate student really :D My driving license hasn't been touched for a year now, I am terrified now because driving a car seems to be a necessity in the States.
  14. Yes, it's a half-time TAship in Penn State, including the first year, unfortunately. 30k + health care (health+dental+vision).
  15. What kind of person downvoted this post?! :D Extremely stressed in a very bad way I guess...
