  1. Tell me what's wrong. The letter suggests a lane be built on Blue Highway for cyclists and argues that a traffic lane will not be suitable to reduce traffic congestion. An analysis of the premises presented is required to validate this claim. Firstly, Shady Village and Bright City seem to be separated by a fairly long distance. This is inferred from the fact that, doubling of the commuting time has bothered commuters. If the distance were a drive of five minutes then it being extended to ten minutes will not be a big problem. Only if the drive took a considerable amount of time will its extension become a notable problem. If this is true, traveling by bicycle will not be a good choice. It will certainly add to the already existing delay. Secondly, the majority of people in Shady Village may be athletes. Their sole purpose for cycling could be for sport. It could also be that most of them have become fitness conscious and therefore want to cycle more to remain fit (as the questionnaire suggests). Cycling in this present age is done more for fitness purposes than to commute between two places separated by a long distance. The letter also discourages building of a new traffic lane by conveniently comparing it with Green Highway. The increase in the number of commuters is assumed from the fact that the number of traffic jams has increased. This is wrong because it could have increased due to other reasons. Since the rise has been observed in winter, it is possible that it was due to the increased snowfall this season. It could have resulted because of the repair works being undertaken this season. Without the exact reasons for the jams we cannot conclude on anything substantial. The writer should have specified which season and which year he is using for his comparison. In order to strengthen his suggestion the writer has to prove that many people in Shady Village commute by bicycle and that they would prefer to shuttle between Shady Village and Bright City on their cycles. In order to prove his point about the new traffic lane he has to provide statistics comparing a few, preferably nearby and similar highways; showing that the lanes actually make things worse. Only by doing this will his stand hold good.
  2. Well written. One problem in para 4 The damages have been caused by pests as the vp mentions; so damage by water etc. cannot be entertained.

    Gerg: Yes. Amigo: Nice work.
  4. 1 = Decline in sales of Fierce Fighter. 2 = Survey indicates parents are more concerned about violence. 1 + 2 doesn't add up to Parents are not buying Fierce Fighter because it encourages violence. The survey says that parents are more concerned about youthful violence not toys that are instigating it. It's an assumption that is not substantiated. It doesn't even mention rise in youthful violence, only the concern has increased. If it did, it most probably did because of Tom and Jerry or the WWE.
  5. Aye Amigo! CONGRATS! 800 in verbal?! What is the reason for your perfect verbal score?...master! Dev.

  7. Ok tell me how valid this observation is. He's assuming that a fighter plan will impress "violence" on kids' minds. What if Fierce Fighter is slightly changed to "look" more educational? Planes can be very educational. Dev.
  8. Please bear with me for asking this question for the zillionth time! How did you guys prepare for the verbal? Dev.

  10. Always observe source: “draft” Is there water in space? How does gravitation aid melting? Heat? With its already amazing gravitational force (9.8 m/s) nothing seems to be happening. (stats) Always ask for stats to substantiate. Where did the first “any water” come from? What if this is came back as rain? Ha Ha, gravitation increases again and now it holds everything together, aye its supposed to melt dude! No decrease in gravitation cited. Therefore: Comet strikes, vaporizes and goes back up, into space. The point about water’s constituents is a good one, but so much detail is not required. The GRE has general topics, topics any student applying for grad can write on. This has been the funniest of all topics I’ve seen. Publisher (to writer): “Go Home!” Dev.
  11. Your essay is fine. The part about publicity is weak; you’re assuming (comparing with???). What if Hopewell can do the same? Just in case you get this one Municipal means local so the golf course was for the local people. Therefore it cannot contribute to tourism. New businesses can start only if necessary infrastructure is available, a hotel is just one, in one of them. What business? Ocean View maybe near an ocean and Hopewell maybe a desert! (As the name suggests!!!) The two towns have to be similar (you've mentioned). What has contributed to Ocean View’s increase in tax revenues? Substantiate with statistics. Improve Hopewell’s revenues? So it’s doing well, give stats. What if Hopewell had an increase of 30%! I maybe wrong. ALL THE BEST for Monday! Come back, post your scores and give pointers. Dev.
  12. "Sales of Better Bran have declined in recent years, for reasons that management has now identified. First, Better Bran is a cereal with high sugar content, and recent research studies have found that most consumers say they are concerned about the amount of sugar added to their breakfast cereal. Second, the price of Better Bran has increased by 5% in each of the last three years. Therefore, to increase our company's profits we need to reduce the amount of sugar in Better Bran and lower Better Bran's price." The reasons cited for Better Bran's decline in sales seem fallacious, although they may contribute to it. The management has come up with two solutions i.e. reduce the amount of sugar and decrease Better Bran's price. When the reasons given for these solutions are scrutinized we end up with possible, poor assumptions that may not even be the real cause for its sales decline. A cereal's primary function is to increase blood sugar levels after a long fast (breakfast) therefore it is quite natural for cereals to have high sugar content. The "reason research" mentioned talks about customers being concerned about the amount of sugar added to their breakfast cereal, it doesn't say they are concerned about its high sugar content. Even if a reputed firm had done this research, it should have been substantiated with more details. For example they could have mentioned who these consumers were. They could have easily been a class of diabetic or diabetic prone people. Or they could have compared the sugar contents of various popular cereals, indicating Better Bran's higher levels of it. The price increase of Better Bran is justified when we accommodate the idea of inflation, and that the prices of raw materials generally increasing with each year. Also a price increase of 5% annually is acceptable under any standards. If Better Bran were the company's only product then we can attribute Better Bran's success to the company's profits. How can a decrease in prices increase the company's profits? They'd rather concentrate on customer satisfaction than price. Here also a statistical analysis comparing Better Bran's price increase with other cereals would have been very handy. What strikes most in this claim is the management's attitude. What is their goal? At first they talk about the customer's need then they conclude with company profits. It looks as if the management after a few years of slumber (management has now) is making a desperate attempt to pinpoint a (possible) cause for decline in sales of Better Bran. The premature decisions could actually end up being detrimental for the company. I would suggest further investigations by another neutral committee or ask the management to substantiate its claims with better evidences or acceptable reasoning. Word count = 366 words.
